Class 1A

 

Beechwood battled valiantly against a ranked Class 6A Simon Kenton, but the Tigers eventually fell. Despite the defeat the Tigers remain at the top of the rankings heading into a showdown with District foe Bellevue. Hazard got a little more than many expected from rival Pikeville but the Bulldogs came away with the huge District win, and look to essentially clinch the Title this week against upstart Phelps. Kentucky Country Day will have their own big clash as they travel to Louisville Holy Cross. The only undefeated team left in Class 1A is Ludlow, and the Panthers hope to keep that streak alive against Dayton. Paris looked sharp against Bracken County and will look to string together another big District win against Nicholas County.

Class 2A

 

School back in the 1950’s had less chalk than the Class 2A Top 10 last week. No team in the Top 10 took home a loss, but with that said, there was no shortage of drama. Danville retains the top spot and their unblemished record, but the Admirals needed a 4th Quarter comeback to take down 6A Tates Creek. Up next for Danville is Somerset, the Briarjumpers had a scare of their own in Raceland but pulled out the narrow three-point victory. The other big game on the slate for this week is the annual clash between DeSales and Christian Academy- Louisville as the Top 5 squads square off for District supremacy. Prestonsburg and Monroe County each secured big wins of their own to improve their potential playoff seeding, and this week Hancock County will attempt to shock Owensboro Catholic in District 2.

Class 3A

 

Much like Class 2A, the next enrollment division up had very little drama among the Top 10 teams. The only game that really had any uncertainty in the Second Half was Casey County’s big District win over Bell County to all but lock up a home field playoff game. Outside of the Top 10 there was a bit more excitement, specifically in District 5. Fleming County needed a last-minute punt return to shock Russell and surprising 5-1 Bath County nipped West Carter by two points. This week things should get a bit more interesting. Top-ranked Belfry will get a stiff test from Cabell Midland in a clash of out of state teams who really know how to move the chains on the ground. A pair of big-time District clashes headline the action. Central and suddenly surging Waggener battle for Louisville bragging rights, meanwhile Lexington Catholic will try to slow down the WanDale Robinson show as Western Hills tries to make a statement.

Class 4A

 

The class that never lacks for surprising outcomes and attention-grabbing story-lines kept us entertained once again. Wayne County and Rockcastle may have had more drama before and after the game than it did on the field as Wayne secured a solid victory. The Cardinals can now essentially ice their District Title if they can beat Knox Central. The other clash of Top 10 foes showed Franklin-Simpson flex their muscle a bit in a convincing win over Allen County- Scottsville. Hopkinsville and Mercer County have been able to stick around the Top 10 despite several losses, both may have seen their run in the rankings come to an end with upset losses to Madisonville- North Hopkins and East Jessamine respectively. Hopkinsville gets a chance at redemption if they can take their frustrations out on Logan County, who is still undefeated. Western continues to remain a bit off the radar due to some quality early season losses where the Warriors coasted past John Hardin and may start garnering more attention statewide.

Class 5A

 

Two teams in last week’s Top 10 earned statement wins. Southwestern was starting to collect some doubt in voter’s eyes, but a victory over 6A Central Hardin in convincing fashion might have validated their standing. The only game featuring two ranked teams last week went the way of Christian County. The Colonels maintained a comfortable distance much of the game against Owensboro and improved to 6-0 entering a showdown with a surprisingly hot Apollo team. The biggest storyline this week involves the three other undefeated teams. Covington Catholic and South Warren each will get significant tests this week against out of State competition. Perry Central remains in the Bluegrass State, but will face their stiffest test of the year against a Whitley County team that needs to rebound from a loss to North Laurel. A game that may be off most people’s radars that might merit a much closer look is Madison Southern and Montgomery County squaring off for what might very well be the District 6 Championship.

Class 6A

 

You can flip the calendar back and forth to any year you want, and no matter which season you land on, Trinity vs. St Xavier will most likely be the talk of Kentucky’s largest classification. The Shamrocks have owned the rivalry of late and continued their dominance by out-classing the Tigers once more. Male took a step in building their case as the most likely threat to Trinity by making a statement against Pleasure Ridge Park. Speaking of statements, Scott County made one by handling Henry Clay. The Cardinals get Frederick Douglass this week and to this point the Mustangs appear to be the best Lexington can throw at the boys from Georgetown. Northern Kentucky provided a bit of excitement as Ryle literally fell short by inches against a strong Cathedral team from Indiana on a Nationally Televised game. Simon Kenton got the win against Class 1A Beechwood, but the Pioneers had their hands a bit fuller than most expected and needed a couple favorable bounces to go their way. Conner and Campbell County will highlight the action this week in the northernmost reaches of the State.
