THE RANKINGS:

1) 5A Covington Catholic (6-0) – Covington Catholic added a 6th win to their record on Friday by beating Columbus, OH-DII St. Francis DeSales (3-2) by a score of 35-7. Quarterback AJ Mayer may have had his season low, passing with 109yds and 1 TD in the air, but RB Casey McGinness had his season high for rushing, with 185yds and 1 TD on the ground, and an impressive 259 all-purpose yards. Sophomore offensive tackle Lucas Jones even added a TD of his own, jumping on a fumbled ball in the endzone. The Colonels have their bye week this week, and will return to action on Oct 6th against Indianapolis, IN-3A Bishop Chatard (3-3).

2) 6A Simon Kenton (6-0) – Simon Kenton also notched their 6th win of the season on Friday by pulling out a 4th quarter come-from-behind 35-30 win over 5A Highlands (2-4). QB Matt Shearer had 234yds and 3 TDs passing for the Pioneers, as well as 104yds and 2 TDs rushing. RB Sam Murray added another 118 yards on to their run game. Will Parks led the defense with 16 tackles, while JJ Courtney, Vuk Sajlovic and Treyvon Nash added 11, 11, and 10 tackles, respectively. Simon Kenton takes on 1A Beechwood (4-1) this week.

3) 6A Ryle (4-1) – No action this week. Ryle hosts Indianapolis, IN-6A Cathedral High School (2-4) on Friday.

4) 1A Beechwood (4-1) – The Tigers played 2A Covington Holy Cross (0-6) on Friday, and extended their undefeated streak against the Indians with a 62-0 win. In the 20 games played in this series, Beechwood now has 5 shutout wins, and has outscored Holy Cross 879-226. QB Brayden Burch went 4-5 passing for 194yds and 4 TDs on Friday, while RB James Davis rushed for 102yds and 4 TDs. Beechwood is hosting 6A Simon Kenton (6-0) this Friday.

5) 5A Highlands (2-4) – The Bluebirds lost another heartbreaker on Friday, watching a 9 point lead with 2-1/2 minutes left in the game slip through their fingers as the 6A Simon Kenton Pioneers (6-0) came back to beat them 35-30. QB Carl Schoellman passed for 161yds and 2 TDs, and RB Larry Wilson rushed for 171yds. It was kicker Nick Bowman’s 3 FGs that helped push the Birds into the 4th quarter lead, along with a pick-6 from Ben Sisson on the defensive side, but it just wasn’t enough for the win. Highlands has the week off before returning to action in 5A district play against Dixie Heights (4-2) on October 6th.

6) 6A Campbell County (3-2) – No action this week. The Camels will host OH-DIII Mt. Healthy (2-3) this week in Claryville.

7) 6A Conner (3-2) – The Cougars made their way back on the winning side of things on Friday by defeating 2A Newport Central Catholic (3-3) 35-27 at home in Hebron. Conner had a fairly balanced offensive game, with 134yds rushing and 113yds passing. QB Cooper Gullion threw 17 times for 14 completions, 113yds and 1 TD in the air, while he added 1 more TD on the ground, along with rushing TDs from Trevor Courts and Jaylen Watkins. DB Clayton Boyd logged 11 tackles on the defensive side of things. Conner will play 2A Lloyd Memorial (4-1) this Friday.

8) 2A Newport Central Catholic (3-3) – The Breds had hoped for another big win on Friday to follow up their upset of the defending 2A champs, Christian Academy Louisville (4-1), but 6A Conner (3-2) wouldn’t let it happen, beating New Cath 35-27. Backup QB Hunter Cain led the offense on Friday, passing for 123yds and 3 TDs. Kyle Kelly rushed for 73yds, and caught 2 passes for 53yds and 2 TDs. Linebacker Jason Decker had a VERY impressive 19 tackles for the Breds’ D. Newport Central Catholic has the week off before returning for 2A district play on October 6th against Covington Holy Cross (0-6).

9) 4A Scott (3-2) – Scott had a fantastic 1st quarter on Friday, going up 21-7 on the 4A Mason County Royals (3-2), but that was the end of the scoring action for the Eagles during regulation. Mason County scored 3 times in the second half to take the game to overtime, but the Eagles managed to pull out a 28-21 OT victory. QB Chad Ohmer passed for 130yds and 1 TD, Nelson Perrin ran for 168yds and 2 TDs, and Quincy Perrin ran for another 110yds and 1 TD. DB Jared Kelsay had an almost unheard-of TWENTY tackles, while Nelson Perrin topped off his offensive performance with 14 tackles of his own. Scott hosts 4A Harrison County (0-6) this week.

10) 2A Walton-Verona (3-2) – The Bearcats had their 3rd shutout win of the season on Friday, trouncing the 2A Owen County Rebels 61-0 in their first district matchup of the year. QB Garret Jones passed for 3 completions, 62yds and 2 TDs, but this game was all about rushing for the Walton-Verona offense. There were FOURTEEN Bearcats who toted the pigskin, with 6 rushers scoring touchdowns, including 2 by Micah Alford. Walton-Verona has the week off, and will return to 2A district play on October 6th against Trimble County (4-1).

GAME OF THE WEEK: WEEK 6

1A Ludlow (5-0) vs. 1A Bishop Brossart (4-1)

Ludlow is currently enjoying the best start to a football season in over 20 years, and will definitely be bringing their A-game to the field on Friday as the Mustangs come to Ludlow intent on upsetting the favored Panthers. Kickoff is at 7:00pm.

4A Holmes (1-4) – The Bulldogs finally got the monkey off their back and celebrated their first win on Friday, beating the 4A Harrison County (0-6) by a score of 14-6 to start off 1-0 in district play. They play 2A Covington Holy Cross (0-6) on Friday at home.

1A Dayton (1-4) – The Green Devils lost 49-8 to 1A Bracken County (5-1) on Friday. They play Eminence (5-1) this week at home.

2A Gallatin County (3-3) – The Wildcats had a disappointing 34-12 loss to 2A Carroll County (2-3) on Friday. They play 2A Owen County (3-2) this week at home.

6A Boone County (1-4) – The Rebels had their third shutout loss of the season on Friday, losing 30-0 to 5A Dixie Heights (4-2). They play 6A George Rogers Clark (3-2) this week at GRC.

Conner played Simon Kenton close in a downpour in a swamp. That had an impact on the score. Beechwood handled Conner easily in a scrimmage (24-7 I think). If Beechwood loses by more than a couple touchdowns, then they should fall below Highlands but not Conner. I have seen Beechwood versus Conner and the Tigers are better.
