If you thought the 1A Game of the Week last week was legendary, this week's game might knock your socks off. Beechwood is back for another #1 vs #1 matchup. This time it's between two Northern Kentucky powers in their own class. We have 1A #1 Beechwood vs. 5A #1 Covington Catholic.

These teams are very familiar with one another as they usually play every season. Last year Beechwood struggled to move the ball on Covington Catholic and only put up ten points while CovCath dropped 44 on the Beechwood defense. Taking a look back at history, you only have to go to 2014 for the last Beechwood win over the Colonels. The last win before that was 2008. Covington Catholic has owned this series as of late. If you go back to the last year of the four class setup (2006), the series is in favor of CovCath 9-2. Beechwood played Covington Catholic very tight in three of those losses. Beechwood is looking to end the two game losing streak while CovCath hopes to push it out to three.

Beechwood comes into this game unbeaten at 3-0 with a big win over 3A #1 Corbin last week 36-29. Beechwood will try to utilize a balanced offense to keep Covington Catholic on its heels. Beechwood has three players who have rushed for over 100 yards on the season. James Davis is the primary ball carrier in the offense but he is also splitting carries with Logan Castleman and Josh Derry. These young men have combined for almost 400 yards. But let's not forget about the General of the team in quarterback Brayden Burch. He has thrown for almost 500 yards on the season with his favorite targets being Daniel Mescher and Castleman. These young men have over 100 yards each and have one touchdown a piece on the season. This will most likely be the toughest game on Beechwood's schedule, even though the Tigers also play 6A Simon Kenton in a couple of weeks.

Now let's talk about Covington Catholic. The Colonels also have a balanced offense that could pose many threats for this Beechwood defense. They come into the game at 4-0 and really haven't been challenged so far this season. Casey McGinness leads a strong attack, rushing for over 400 yards and 5 touchdowns. On the season, he is averaging just over 100 yards a game. AJ Mayer is the General for this team, as he has thrown for over 800 yards with 11 touchdown passes and only one interception. His favorite targets are Jack Coldiron and Malachi Pike. These two young men have combined for over 400 yards receiving, over half of AJ Meyers passing yards.

Covington Catholic is only giving up an average of just over eight points a game to its opponents. So to say their defense is good may be an understatement. They will hope to contain an offense that could be a mirror image of their own. Will the Colonels' defense be up to the task? Beechwood could be the best team Covington Catholic has faced so far this early season.

Who can win this Herculean battle? Can Beechwood put an end to this two game losing streak? Can Covington Catholic make Beechwood another notch on its win belt? Heck...is it Friday yet?

About the bold: CovCath starting defense gave up only 7 points to Ryle (the other 10 were given up late in the game) on the first play of that game. The 2 points that were scored by LexCath was earned via a safety on a bad snap during a punt. CovCath shutout Cooper and yes all 14 points vs. Kings were against the 1st team defense. So the CovCath 1st team "D" has only given up a total of 7-0-0-14 = 21 divide that by 4 and the 1st team "D" has only given up 5.25 points so far in 4 games.

Also IMHO Kings beats any of the other three teams (Ryle, LexCath and Cooper), CovCath has played so far!

BTW nice article! :thumb:

8 ppg or 5 ppg, Covington Catholic's defense is pretty good. How many points do we expect Beechwood to score on that defense?

My math is just what the score shows from the end of the game. I'm assuming the 5 points per game is to the actual people in the know at Cov Cath.
