article Class 6A Notebook 8/28: Top 4 undefeated: only 5 others remain unbeaten

Last week’s prediction threads saw the BGP faithful successfully chose 4 out of 6 winners. Pleasure Ridge Park surprised Bowling Green 35-21 and Tates Creek was defeated by Douglass 49-22. Trinity, Male, Scott County, and Simon Kenton held up their end of the bargain and met the BGP expectations.

 

Two weeks in and Class 6A has only 9 of 33 teams undefeated. Sixteen 6A teams lost to lower division Kentucky teams in the first two games: 2A-6, 3A-1, 4A-1, 5A-8.

Six lost to 6A only (Henry Clay, Bryan Station, Tates Creek, Lafayette, Boone County, and Meade County). Two lost to out of state teams only thus far.

Undefeated: Conner and Saint Xavier are 1-0. Seven squads are 2-0:Simon Kenton, Scott County. Male, Pleasure Ridge Park, Ohio County,

Trinity, Central Hardin.

 

When you review the 6A rankings for week 2, you may notice minimal movement for those teams who suffered losses. There are very few teams who merit replacing teams currently in the top ten.

 

A team that is only a blip on our radar is Ohio County. The Eagles have beaten 2A McLean County 40-38 and 4A Hopkins County Central 37-18. Ohio County hosts 2A Hancock County this Friday and may move into the rankings discussion sooner than later just by remaining unbeaten. They also play a 5A and a 4A team before their first test against a 6A team-Henderson County. After getting through the 4 game district schedule the Eagles close the season with 2A Butler County.

 

 

Games of note involving 6A teams:

 

Archbishop Moeller (OH) (1-0) visits #1 Trinity. The Crusaders won handily Saturday evening 42-7 over Hamilton (OH). Moeller is 4-1 all-time versus Trinity. The Rocks first played the Crusaders in 1997. The most recent time Trinity saw them was 2014.

 

#2 Saint Xavier (1-0) travels to 5A #2 Bowling Green (1-1) to face the 5A #1 Purples. The Tigers look to avenge last year’s 31-10 defeat to Bowling Green. The luster is off this game somewhat due to the Pleasure Ridge Park upset of the Purples 35-21.

 

#7 Lafayette visits 3A #6 Lexington Catholic. The Knights were thrashed by Covington Catholic 48-2 last Friday. The Generals dropped a 31-21 decision to Scott County. The Generals have too much talent for the private Lexington school and will win easily.

 

#6 Simon Kenton (2-0) at #10 Conner (1-0). The Cougars own a win over Boone County this season. The Pioneers defeated Conner last season 39-27. The ‘Neers own wins over Meade County and Bryan Station. One of these titans will drop from the ranks of the unbeaten after this game.

 

#5 Pleasure Ridge Park (2-0) at Eastern (1-1). The Eagles fell to Christian Academy of Louisville 33-9 last week. While the Panthers ended Bowling Green’s win streak at 28 by a 35-21 tally. The Panthers will win this one easily as their quarterback is cleared to play per the Courier-Journal.

 

Doss at #3 Male. The 5A unranked Dragons travel to Preston Highway to face the Bulldogs. Doss lost to South Oldham 33-14 last Friday. Male took care of business versus #12 Ballard 35-14. Look for Male to control this one from the opening kickoff.

 

Western travels a short distance to #9 Butler in a neighborhood rivalry contest. The Bears lost a 28-27 squeaker to the 2A #3 DeSales Friday. 4A Western fell to the 3A #4 Central Yellowjackets 13-12 the same night.

I think we learn if ST.X is a contender and if Trinity is for sure unbeatable in KY.

We will learn Trinity runs the table in Kentucky regardless of the outcome of Moeller. Defeating Moeller willl keep the Shamrocks in National conversation the balance of 2017. St. Xavier will learn if they have the ability to keep up with Bowling Green's skill. Even with a loss to the Purples, the Tigers will be favored to meet Trinity in December at Kroger Field.

I had to take a timeout. It lasted more than 30 minutes, so I could not edit my post. Here are some more words of wisdom. :popcorn:More specifically, we will learn how Trinity handles a well-disciplined team with size and some skill people. We cannot count on Moeller giving us 111 penalty yards as did Warren Central(IN). Moeller is not as highly touted as in recent years, but they are still Moeller. Moeller has two more games with 6A Kentucky teams in the coming weeks. We'll be able to play the comparison score game until the final four in the playoffs! Can Nick Bohn continue his hot hand at QB? I am told his confidence grew immensely when was inserted as the starting QB in last year's playoff game with Ohio County. The Trinity defense is playing well despite giving up 7 touchdowns last Friday. We'll learn if having Alex Wilson back in the defensive backfield makes a difference in coverage and open field tackling. The defense stood up and made the play of the game stopping Warren Central from 1.5 yards out from a go ahead two point conversion.

 

As for Saint Xavier, can they steam roll the Purples, keeping Bowling Green's offense off the field. Saint Xavier usually has a strong kicking game. We'll see how that holds up in the muck Saturday.

If the Tigers match the Pleasure Ridge Park effort shown versus Bowling Green, a similar outcome should be achieved. The 6A district three schedule will be very interesting and competitive the rest of the year.
