Thanks for posting this and like you pointed out it is pretty laughable when you examine it.

 

"National Rankings" and/or State Rankings done by a national entity always make me chuckle.

One important thing to note as well is this will change before now and the start of the season.

 

The one thing I will give Calpreps, and I have said this before, is there actually is some intelligence put into their rankings and not just a CPU formula.

 

They reach out to Coaches and try to get confirmation on # of starters lost, players with D-1 offers, and whether key positions or key players are returning.

 

If you click "Team Preview" by each team you will see a note at the top saying "TEAM NOT OFFICIALLY RATED YET; HAVEN'T HEARD BACK FROM COACH"

 

Once Calpreps receives this info they adjust their ratings appropriately. Kudos to them for at least attempting to put some thought in it... that's why I have always trusted Calpreps over the other CPU ratings (they also account for Out of State Competition during the season). It's also why I would actually take Calpreps over the AP Popularity Poll.

What these rankings essentially are right now is a mirror of how the teams finished last season while accounting for notable players lost or known Key Players returning.

All of this! In my opinion, if you take out five prominent rankings, I'd put them in order of accuracy:

 

1. BGP

2. Calpreps

3. Litkenhous

4. Cantrall

5. AP

 

The gap between the top two and next three is pretty wide, too.

The gap between the top four and the AP is pretty wide.

 

Some of my fellow journalists need to do more research. Some need to NOT vote local schools so high.

 

That being said, @Jason Frakes posts his weekly votes on here for everyone to see. He doesn't hide.

 

It would be great if the AP posted voting ballots for this very reason: It would force voters to become more accurate and less homerish.

It is a preseason computer poll. That puts more guesswork into the computer than facts, especially at the high school level. That said, both Beechwood and Hazard look too low. Both teams were state finalists and have a lot of talent returning.

Boone County at 109? They haven't won a game in a long time.

It's not where you start, it's where you finish...

That rating changes daily as teams trend up or down and it looks a lot different today than it did a few days ago. I find it really interesting, though, and enjoy looking at the criteria for moving teams up/down.
