Dead Period Question

Can High School Varsity coaches attend camps during the dead period? I was at Rick Bolus Camp today and saw a head varsity coach standing on the sidelines watching the 5 on 5 games. The date is 6/28. The way I understand the rules he should not have been there. I'm not going to throw this guy under the bus, but if it's illegal he sure wasn't too worried about getting caught.

His school playing? If so yes he can't be there

Then how do these high school coaches coach at the camps then? I have 2 kids I coach at the Bolus camp right now and they both have a coach from near the Louisville area coaching them. Last year had a kid that had a coach from the Lex area coaching them. Now I GUESS it's possible none of those guys had/have players at the camp...I mean that would have to be the situation, correct?

How helpful is dead period if most all the kids are at camp. lol

Not doubting that some coaches try and find access during the dead period, but most high school coaches are on vacation this time of year.

What if a kid is in a middle school that feeds the high school coaches school?

I'd be surprised if that made a difference as that would be quite difficult to monitor.

Since middle school is now part of the KHSAA, would this make it illegal as well?

No, just checked and the rule specifically states a student enrolled at the school the coach is at.

It puts the decision in the hands of the parent. It says' "Look, here are two weeks where you can choose what to do without being penalized by a coach. Vacation, have family dinners, rest and relax...or attend clinics that you CHOOSE to. Coach can't tell you what to do."

When my oldest went to the Bolus camp he was coached by the coach who was at Danville at the time. I don't know if here were any Danville kids at the camp but I know the Danville head coach had access to the starting PG at Boyle County during the dead period.

From Bylaw 24:

(1) No coach may coach a student-athlete in any setting if that

student-athlete has previously represented the high school

(varsity, junior varsity or freshmen) and if sports specific skills are being taught, refined, developed or evaluated;

(2) No coach in a sport at a school may coach other individuals

who are enrolled in grades 9-12 but may not have yet played

for the school

9) There can be no observation of student-athletes who are

enrolled at the coach’s high school, even if such observation

is in conjunction with outside employment such as camps,

leagues or clinics. The only exception is detailed in the

allowable activities concerning the observation (including

transportation) of the coach’s children (blood or by marriage)

who are on the playing roster and actively participating on the

regular high school team at a member school;

So, in essence, if the head basketball coach at Booger Holler High is working ABC camp in Lexington, no basketball player from Booger Holler can be there participating at the camp per #9.
