article Does the Northern Kentucky Boys Basketball Coaches Assoc. need to look in the mirror?

The NKBBCA (Northern Kentucky Boys Basketball Coaches Association) announced their all-conference team this past weekend. Coaches from Dixie, Cooper, Covington Catholic, Ryle, Boone County, Campbell County, Simon Kenton, Conner, and Scott voted.

One player, Covington Catholic's top player and D1 recruit CJ Fredrick, was voted as the 8th best player among those 9 schools. I spoke to numerous NKY Basketball Experts and NKY Basketball Coaches about CJ Fredrick being ranked 8th and below are their comments:

"This is an example of a group either not seeing a player enough, putting too much stock in time missed for injury, or both. While CJ has a length you don't see on many 6'4" kids, is a fantastic passer, and a high quality shooter. Fortunately for him, those basketball evaluators that matter fully recognize and appreciate his unique skill set." - BluegrassPreps.com Basketball Analyst

With him only playing against two Division I teams in Northern Kentucky, due to injury, there's simply no true way of knowing if he would have out performed or had better numbers than the players ranked ahead of him. What most people don't realize is even though CJ has a lot of hype, not all of the coaches have a had a chance to see him in person. "Honestly I think that has more to do with him playing for Cov Cath than his ability. I've seen all of these kids play the only 3 I would consider ahead of him would be Kunkel, McNeil and Ohmer. No, most of this is not on the other thread. And of course we are happy for all the deserving players that made it. This is larger than any one player.

If a guy was preseason player of year in college and then missed a large chunk of his team's games, would he even be voted first team at end of the season?

If this is saying he is only the 8th best player, that is obviously foolish. If they're saying he had the 8th best conference season, or something like that, it might not be really unreasonable since he missed a good chunk of time.

For anyone that has been following along Sean McNeil (great player, very deserving of the honor) also missed several games.

So one of the top three players in NKY misses several games and he is voted the top player in NKY, another one of the top three players in NKY misses several games and he is voted 8th.

I don't know how anyone can reconcile that disparity.

Wasn't there a ranking by the NKY coaches last year that we discussed? Some random team got a first place vote and it knocked one of the top teams out of the top of the ranking? I remember running the math to see how the point total would have worked out.

I think that is apples and oranges as I covered in the other thread with:

There is a big difference in a player or a team being a position or two off in a set of rankings and a player that is CLEARLY in the top 3, if not number one, being ranked 8th.

If you can't see that difference we can just agree to disagree.

So how far point-wise was the spread between 8th and third? Knowing that might show it really is not that big of a divide and if a coach or two put him a spot further up on the ballot he might very well have finished third.
