3rd Region District Tournament Preview

Recommended Posts

****12th District - at Butler Co - 1st round - Tues // Final - Friday

6pm-#9.Edmonson(17-10, 6-1) v #15.Trinity(7-23, 0-7) - Edmonson 3-0 vs Trinity this year, 69-48 in ALL-A, 56-49 at the Barn & 68-44 1/31 in Edmonson County.

7:30-#10.Grayson(14-15, 4-2) v #12.Butler(11-15, 3-3) - Butler won the first meeting on 1/20 56-54 on a Will Moore buzzer beater. Grayson avenged the loss on 2/10, winning 48-39. Should be a toss up game with a slight advantage going to Butler because they are at home.

Edmonson should be the favorite. They have two of the better scoring guards in the region and a solid big man with Blankenship. Grayson County has some nice wins but have been inconsistent. Butler has talent accross the board but have struggled to put it all together this season. Should be 3 solid games.

****11th District - at Hancock Co - 1st round - Tues // Final - Friday

BOYS- 5:30 #1.Hancock(25-4, 6-1) v #13.Cloverport(10-19, 1-6) -The Hornets controlled all 3 meetings vs the Aces, 76-37, 64-29(All-A), 59-41

7:15 - #8.Breck(11-15, 3-3) v #11.Meade(9-20, 3-3) - Meade won 72-49 before Xmas when Baker was healthy. On 1/27 Breck won 75-69 without Baker. - Breck is 7-1 since 1/25, Meade 8-1 w/Baker, 1-19 without him. It looks like James Baker will return, but no one is sure how effective he will be. Breck has been the hottest team in the region over the last 2 weeks. This may be the best 1st round matchup in the entire region.

Record wise, Hancock County should be the favorite. They also host, giving them a slight home court advantage. Breck is on fire right now and may be the team to beat. With Meade, evertyhing hinges on Baker. If he is back and his old self, there is little doubt, the Waves are the best team in the 11th. Expecting him to return around 50% makes this district wide open.

****10th District - at Mclean - 1st round tonight // Finals - Thursday

BOYS - #6.Muhlenberg(13-15, 3-1) v #14.Mclean(3-25, 0-4) - 101-67, 70-34 Muhlenberg dominated both meetings. While Sam Miller has returned for Mclean, this still looks like a pretty lopsided matchup on paper.

#2.Ohio(15-12, 3-1) - Finished the season 8-1 since 1/20. The Hartford Eagles are the first team to punch their ticket to the Sportscenter and may be playing better basketball than anyone in the 3rd. If it does indeed come down to the Eagles and Mustangs, the 10th district final should be a real treat.

****9th District - at DC - First Round Tues/Wed // Final - Friday

7pm TUE- #3.Apollo(22-6, 7-1) v #5.DC(18-11, 2-5) - Apollo won both games vs DC this year....61-54, 62-51 . DC led both games at the half but had no answer for Zach Hopewell, who took over both games. Apollo is the favorite but in an elimination game against your #1 rival, all bets are off. The Panthers will be looking to avenge last years upset to Apollo that eliminated them 1 game into the postseason, after putting up 25 regular season wins.

7pm WED - #4.Catholic(19-10, 3-5) v #6.OHS(13-14, 3-4) -12/9 60-58 OHS OT, 1/6 62-51 OHS - OHS comes in, winning 1 of their last 4. Catholic had won 5 in a row but lost 2 straight to Ohio & Muhlenberg. This is a head scratching matchup on paper. Catholic, no doubt, had the better regular season, but OHS controlled both regular season games. This game will be a fun contrast of styles. Tim Riley likes to slow the pace and keep the score in the 40-50 point range, while OHS likes to get the score into the 70's. Whoever can dictate the pace, will win the ballgame.

Apollo is the favorite because they have show consistency as the season has gone along. Since losing the season opener to Catholic on 12/2, the Eagles are 6-0 in the 9th. Catholic is the defending 3rd Region and 9th District champion AND they have a coach in Tim Riley who knows what it takes in the postseason. Keep an eye on big man JD Marshall. No one in district can matchup with him in the paint. OHS has had an up and down season, but still sport a very talented roster. One win vs Catholic can set their season heading in a different direction. A lot of folks are probably over looking Daviess County, but they absolutely have a team that can not only win the district, but represent the 3rd at Rupp. Owen and Boswell can score with the best of them. Throw in the fact that DC is playing at home and im not sure a win over Apollo would be that big of an upset.

TOP 5 SCORERS -

BOYS-1.Hopewell(20.9) 2.McElwain(17.6) 3.Lewis(16.6) 4.Poole(15) 5.Board(14.9)
