Inside the 3rd Region (2/13)

Recommended Posts

As we head into the final week of the regular season, there is a shake up at the top of the standings. Up to this point, it appears that Catholic, Hancock and Apollo are all playing some of their best basketball of the season. There isn't much separating the 3 at the top. Ohio County and Muhlenberg County are two teams that can beat anyone on any given night. Owensboro has proven to be a thorn in the side of Catholic this season, and play them in an elimination game in the 9th district tournament. A win there could set the Devils up for a run through the tourney. Daviess County is sliding but still look capable of being a very tough out. All of this while James Baker is getting set to try to return for the postseason. This is as wide open as I have ever seen the region heading toward tournament time...

1.Owensboro Catholic Aces(19-8) - UP 1 - Coach Riley has the Aces playing their best basketball of the season at the right time. The Aces have won 5 in a row and 9 of their last 10. Catholic holds the most impressive wins vs out of area opponents, getting another one this past Saturday vs Doss, 61-46. On Tuesday, they scored a nice come from behind road win at Warren Central in overtime, on a court named after Tim Riley. Luke Hayden(15ppg), JD Marshall(10ppg) and Jacob Mulchay(10ppg) all average double figures scoring but the Aces are getting it done with defense. Since the loss to Apollo on 1/13 Catholic has not given up more than 49 points in a game. Thats even more impressive when you see they have played the likes of Franklin Simpson, Daviess Co, Warren Central and Doss. The Aces look to keep rolling toward the postseason as they finish vs Ohio County tonight and on the road vs Muhlenberg on Thursday.

2.Hancock County Horners(23-4) - UP 1 -Before falling to John Hardin on the road last night, the Hornets had reeled off 6 straight wins. Of those 6 wins, none were more impressive than against Apollo last Thursday. The Hornets got it done with impressive stingy defense and you could see they were trying to prove they belonged among the best teams in the region. Kane Logsdon had his best game of the season vs the Eagles, scoring 18. They also scored wins against Duggar Union, Bethlehem & Evansville Day last week. The Hornets finish their regular season at home vs Cannelton tonight and Grayson County on Friday.

3.Apollo Eagles(20-6) - DOWN 2 - Although Apollo dropped down the poll this week, they played 2 of their best games of the season last week. First, they knocked off Henderson County on the road in a grind it out ballgame that saw Zach Hopewell knock down the game winner with 3 seconds left. On Saturday, they outlasted a very good John Hardin team. Apollo was able to overcome a red hot shooting effort from the Bulldogs to get the 80-71 win. If that Apollo team shows up at tournament time, they are going to be very hard to beat. Sandwiched in between those two outings however, Apollo dropped a tough road game in Hancock County. Hancock used great defense to get Apollo out of sync. Apollo hung in and was able to tie the game under a minute, but Brendan Lewis hit a jumper in the lane to give Hancock the win. The Eagles host Madisonville on Tuesday before closing out the season in Mclean County on Friday.

4.Ohio County(13-12) - UP 1 - Ohio County's overall record does not symbolize how they have been playing down the stretch. They have won 6 of their last 7 and their lone loss to Breck County came without 2 key players. The Eagles are tough because they have so many players that can score. Throw in Tony Hoppers outstanding defense and Ohio County is a team to watch as we head toward the Sportscenter. They close out the season at Catholic tonight and vs Madisonville on Thursday.

5.Daviess County(16-11) - DOWN 1 - The Panthers are heading in the wrong direction as we approach the postseason. They have lost 5 of their last 6, with their only win in that stretch vs a 2 win Mclean County team. On Friday, they were unable to overcome Austin Sailings 9 3's, as they lost to Muhlenberg County. Blake Boswell was fantastic in the loss, scoring 28. The Panthers were without star guard Jay Owen. DC will look to regain some confidence with 2 home games to close out the regular season, tonight vs Grayson County and Thursday vs South Warren.

6.Owensboro(13-13) - SAME - OHS took one on the chin at the hands of Bowling Green on Tuesday before bouncing back with a big win over Whitesville Trinity on Friday. The up and down season for Owensboro will come to a close this week with two very tough games. They are at Hopkinsville tonight and host Henderson on Thursday. It has to be in the back of Devils fans minds, that the rough regular season can be erased with a win over Catholic in the 9th district tournament. The Devils have controled both games against the Aces this year.

7.Muhlenberg County(12-14) - UP 1 - The Mustangs have the look of a team that could be one of the best in the region, if they can get their full roster on the floor. They have only been 100% for 4 of their 26 regular season games thus far. On Friday, they got a great effort from Austin Sailing, as he knocked down 9 3's to help the Mustangs win on the road at Daviess County. In talking to some coaches in attendance, they all believe that Muhlenberg is going to be one of the best teams at the Sportscenter in two weeks. The Stangs continue their tough schedule as they head to Christian County tonight before hosting Catholic to close out the regular season.

8.Grayson County(14-13) - DOWN 1 - The Cougars did nothing to be bumped down the poll this week. They have won 4 straight games, all coming inside the 3rd region. They avenged an earlier loss to Butler County on Friday, winning by 9. They will face the Bears again next week, in the first round of the 12th district tournament at Butler County. Before then, they close the season at Daviess County tonight and at Hancock on Friday.

9.Breck County(8-15) - SAME - The Tigers ran their winning streak to 6 games with a 71-58 win over Mclean on Friday. Sophomore Tanner Whitworth had 19 3's though 9 quarters during the streak. No shooter in the region is hotter. They had their win streak snapped on Saturday with a loss to CAL. Breck closes out their home slate with a game vs Central Hardin tonight and end the regular season on the road, at Trinity.

10.Edmonson County(15-10) - SAME - Edmonson has lost 3 of their last 4. On Saturday, they were looking forward to a showdown with Hancock County, but came up short in a morning game vs Bethlehem 65-63. They do carry the #1 seed in the 12th district, setting up a first round matchup vs Trinity. They close out the season at Mclean County tonight and vs Logan County on Friday. Credit Logan County for taking the game on short notice to allow Edmonson to have their senior night as it was originally canceled due to the flu outbreak.

11.Butler County(10-13) - UP 1 - The Bears have won 3 of 4. They dropped a game vs Grayson on Friday night but bounced back with a win over Glasgow last night. In talking to some people around the program, they think Rex Henderson making his football college decision has relaxed him on the court. Rex has the size and ability to take over games. They finish at Cloverport tonight and host Hopkins Central on Friday.

12.Meade County(9-18) - DOWN 1 - Meade continues to slide down the poll as they played a brutal schedule last week. Losses came at the hands of very good Oldham County teams. The good news for the Waves is James Baker gets the pins out of his hand this week. It will be interesting to see if he can return to form in such a short period of time. Its worth monitoring. With Baker on the floor, Meade is a top 5 team in the region. They continue their tough schedule this week at John Hardin tonight and Central Hardin on Thursday.

13.Cloverport(10-17) - SAME - The Aces dropped games this past week to Tell City Indiana and Portland Christian. They close out the regular season at home against Butler County tonight and Saturday vs St Francis.

14.Mclean County(3-23) - UP 1 - The Cougars got a win this week over Trinity 38 -37. The better news is Sam Miller was back in the lineup. Although the Cougars only have 3 wins this season, a healthy Sam Miller makes things a bit more interesting as we head toward the postseason. They close out the regular season with home games vs Edmsonson tonight and Apollo on Friday.

15.Trinity(7-21) - DOWN 1 - The Raiders dropped 2 regional games to OHS on Friday and Mclean on Saturday. They bounced back with a 55-51 win over Dawson Springs. Trinity will close "The Barn" on Thursday night as they play Breck County. It will be a bittersweet goodbye as Trinity opens a brand new community center next season. They close the season on the road at Union County on Friday.

Games to watch this week

Tonight - Ohio Co at Catholic // OHS at Hoptown // Muhlenberg at Christian Co

Thursday - Catholic at Muhlenberg // Henderson at OHS

Friday - Grayson Co at Hancock Co
