1. Corbin (13-2 overall, 6-0 vs. 13th Region competition)

If there were any doubts Corbin wasn’t the top team in the 13th Region then they’re none now after seeing Corbin dominate Harlan County during Saturday’s match-up between the two teams. The Redhounds pulled out a dominating 72-54 win over the Black Bears behind a 31-point, 15-rebound and eight assist effort by junior guard Andrew Taylor, who is averaging more than 30 points a game.

Corbin will be tested this week with a road game at Jackson County on Tuesday and a road game at Knox central Friday that is a rematch of an earlier game between the two teams that the Redhounds won, 76-71.

2. South Laurel (15-4, 5-1)

The Cardinals have been red hot of late, They are winners of five in a row and haven’t lost to an in-state team since dropping a 61-52 decision to Corbin on Dec. 13th. South Laurel went on the road and handed Clay County a 71-63 loss behind a 27-point scoring effort by Jared Grubb. In what once many considered a concern, the Cardinals have developed one of the best benches in the region. Matthew Cromer, Logan Madden and Matthew Dalton combined to score 18 points against Clay County, and the bench totaled 17 points during the Cardinals’ win over top ranked Covington Catholic the week before. Grubb leads South Laurel with a 20.7 scoring average.

3. Knox Central (12-4, 5-1)

This is an important week for the Panthers. They have two home games this week and if they win both, they will bypass South Laurel and garner the region’s top ranking. Knox Central will host struggling Harlan County Tuesday before hosting Corbin Friday. The Panthers are on a roll, winners of three straight, since suffering a last-second defeat to Perry Central. Knox Central is coming off a 71-26 blowout win over Bell County. Marcella Turner leads the Panthers with an 18-point scoring average while Wade Liford follows with 16.5 points per game.

4. North Laurel (15-3, 4-2)

The Jaguars are winners of two straight, which includes last week’s 99-66 49th District win over Jackson County. Senior guard Peyton Broughton continues to impress, scoring 34 points against the Generals, which matches his 34.0 scoring average for the season.

5. Harlan County (17-2, 6-1)

After starting the season with a school record 17 straight wins, the Black Bears are struggling. They have now suffered back-to-back double digit losses after losing to Perry Central (68-52) last week while suffering a 72-54 loss to Corbin on Saturday. Not having the services of Anthony Nolan against the Redhounds hurt, but Corbin did a great job of not letting guard Cameron Carmical take over, limiting him to only 11 points, seven under his average. Harlan County should have a rather easy time with Virginia’s Lee County today before hitting the road and facing off against Knox Central Tuesday.

6. Clay County (8-8, 4-4)

The Tigers are off to their worst start since going 9-7 to begin the 2008-09 campaign under former coach Kevin Spurlock. They have dropped five of their last six games, but with that said, don’t let their 8-8 record fool you. This team isn’t bad. Granted a loss to North Laurel at home tuesday would mark the first time in more than 20 years Clay County would have a losing record this deep into the season, they could easily win tomorrow as well. The Tigers possess the best inside game int he region and will need to get both Logan Gabbard and Ryan Rogers involved to beat the Jaguars. Will Sexton leads Clay County with an 18.9 scoring average.

7. Whitley County (6-9, 2-4)

The Colonels are another team that you can’t overlook. Jerry Overbey’s squad has been dealing wit injuries the entire season, and might have turned in their best game of the season this past week against Corbin despite losing, 69-63. Whitley County is a dangerous team, especially with Josh Richardson back in the lineup after being injured for a while. Corey Johnson continues to show just how good he is, averaging 16.9 points per game while Hunter Hollingsworth is starting to shine as well.

8. Pineville (12-4, 7-1)

The Mountain Lions are a team that’s really hard to figure out, but with that said, they’re two wins away from repeating as 13th Region All ‘A’ Classic champions. Pineville plays Williamsburg today in semifinal action, and if the Mountain Lions win, they’ll play the winner of Lynn camp/Harlan tomorrow. Trent Lefevers leads Pineville with a 20.6 scoring average.

9. Lynn Camp (9-6, 4-2)

The Wildcats finally snapped their six-game win streak by defeating Middlesboro, but it wasn’t easy. Lynn Camp still has a long way to go to get where coach Dinky Phipps believes his team should be at. The addition of Marcus Hollin will help the Wildcats, who has been struggling to score as of late.

10. Harlan (7-6, 3-2)

Welcome to the top 10 Harlan. The Green Dragons make their first appearance after upsetting Barbourville, 65-57, during first round action of the 13th Region All ‘A’ Classic Tournament. Killian Ledford has been a pleasant surprise this season, and leads Harlan with a 15.3 scoring average.

11. Barbourville (8-9, 4-5)

The Tigers had a disappointing setback when they lost to Harlan int he first round of the 13th Region All ‘A’ Classic Tournament this past week. Many thought they had a chance to win the tournament.

12. Jackson County (7-8, 2-6)

Before the season started, I thought the Generals had a chance to surprise either North Laurel or Clay County in 49th District Tournament play this season. But if they’re going to do it, they need to turn things around quick. Jackson County has lost four games in a row, which includes a 72-49 loss to Clay County and a 99-66 loss to North Laurel.

13. Bell County (8-11, 3-4)

The Bobcats saw their three-game win streak come to an end after falling to Knox Central, 71-26, this past week. Bell County’s main struggles is getting consistent scoring.

14. Williamsburg (3-10, 2-4)

The Yellow Jackets surprised some by defeating Red Bird this past week, and they can continue to move up the regional ranking ladder with an upset win over Pineville today.

15. Red Bird (6-8, 2-7)

Since starting the season with a 3-1 record, the Cardinals are 3-7 since. The Cardinals held a double digit lead over Harlan, but ended up losing, 71-57, and then had another setback this past week against Williamsburg, falling, 59-46.

16. Middlesboro (2-12, 0-9)

The Yellow Jackets continue to improve under coach Isaac Wilson. They’ve dropped six games in a row, but four of those losses are five points or less.

17. OBI (3-8, 1-7)

The Mountaineers are losers of four straight and six of their last seven games.
