article 10th Region Recap and Rankings - 1/9/17

A little bit of movement as a result of last week's action as pretty much everybody returned to school and regular-season action. Our top-ranked team continued its stranglehold at the top of the heap, while our number 3 and 4 switched places.

1. Campbell County (14-1, 5-1 region). The early-season loss to Bracken County is a fading memory as the Camels stretched their winning streak to a dozen. Garren Bertsch and Cole Hegyi combined for 50 in an impressive 71-170 win over Mason County. Bertsch added another 25 in a 74-45 romp over district foe Bishop Brossart. Campbell plays a pair of away games this week - at Western Hills (OH) and at Conner.

2. Scott (12-4, 4-0 region). As usual, Jake Ohmer led the scoring parade with 31 in a 73-55 decision over Holmes, and followed up with 25 in a 62-50 decision over Simon Kenton; bringing their winning streak to 5. The Eagles play another pair of non-10th region NKY foes this week - first Boone County, then a much-anticipated matchup against Dixie Heights in the Bluegrass Classic on the NKU campus.

3. Paris (11-6, 6-1 region). The Hounds won a close one at Clark County by the score of 58-55 in a key 40th district seeding game, then easily dispatched St. Patrick 78-40 in their 10th-region All-A opener. Paris' only action this week will be in the All-A.

4. Clark County (9-7, 3-2 region). The Cardinals switch places with Paris as a result of the loss to Paris. They rebounded nicely in a 15-point win over 16th-region opponent Russell. Jordan Graham had 14 and 7, and Chase Taylor had a nice stat line of 13/7/12/5. Clark plays a trio of games this week - at Harrison, then at home vs. Montgomery County and Greenup County.

5. Pendleton County (9-6, 3-2 region). Coach Belcher's charges took a pair of games last week. First was a 72-48 romp over 38th district foe Robertson. Dontaie Allen poured in 26 in a win over Fairdale, running their current win streak to 4. Pendleton suits up against Fleming County and Grant County this week.

6a. Mason County (9-7, 4-3 region). Mason County dropped a pair of double-digit decisions last week. Jaylen Lofton led the Royals with 24 in the loss to Campbell County, with Leevi Dunaway and Isaiah Garrison adding 13 apiece. Garrison contributed 20 and Dunaway 15 in the loss to Holmes. The Royals await big man Dalton Perkins' return to the lineup as they face Fleming County, Ashland and Lexington Catholic this week.

6b. Bourbon County (7-8, 4-2 region). The Colonels handled Nicholas County 75-55 and Frankfort 71-64 last week. Ameryon Blackburn is hitting nearly 87% from the line on the season. Southwestern, Harrison County and Lincoln County are on tap this week.

8. Bracken County (7-7, 5-2 region). The Polar Bears' only action of the week (one game was postponed) came in the 10th Region All-A tournament, with their next game pits them against region #9 Nicholas County.

9. Nicholas County (8-7, 5-4 region). Nicholas dropped a 75-55 decision to Bourbon County early in the week, then bounced back with a 79-78 thriller over Bath County in overtime and a 72-65 win over Augusta in the 10th Region All-A. Bracken County is up next.

10. Montgomery County (4-11, 0-3 region). The Indians fell to Madison Southern by the score of 57-41, and face Grant County, 40th district foe Clark County; then Scott this week. Brennan Canada continues to pace the Indians in scoring, averaging 17PPG.

The rest:

11. Bishop Brossart (5-12, 2-2). The 'stangs dispatched Ludlow and Silver Grove before the loss to Campbell County. All-A action vs. Calvary Christian is next.

12. Harrison County (2-12, 0-6). Spencer Free and Blake Price propelled the Breds to just their second win of the season over a pretty good Beechwood squad. It doesn't get any easier as Harrison plays Clark County, Bourbon County and North Oldham this week.

13. Augusta (7-7, 3-4). The Panthers fell to Nicholas County in the first round of the All-A last week, and host Newport at home this week.

14. Robertson County (7-5, 1-4). The Black Devils dropped lopsided decisions to Pendleton County and Bracken County. They look to get back on the winning track against Burgin, who they defeated earlier in the season.

15. Calvary Christian (6-6, 2-3). CC went 2-1 last week with wins over St. Patrick and Dayton before falling to Ludlow; and see action tonight against Brossart in the All-A.

16. St. Patrick (4-11, 0-6). The Saints' losing streak hit 7 games last week. Three games are up this week - Beechwood, Silver Grove and Rose Hill.

17. Silver Grove (1-9, 0-2). Congrats to the Big Trains as they notched their first win of the season against Heritage Academy.

Player of the Week:

This week's honorees are Garren Bertsch and Cole Hegyiof Campbell County. Bertsch tallied 52 points in the wins over Mason County and Bishop Brossart, with Hegyi adding 39. Bertsch and Hegyi have scored 278 and 277 points respectively for the Camels this season.

You can throw 5 through 8 into a hat, pull them out in any order you want, and get no argument from me. Bourbon gets the slight edge (from me) right now based on strength of schedule. Bracken will get a shot at them soon enough.

Brennan is hoping to be back around the first of February. He is hoping the cast comes off this week and he will be in a boot.

That would be huge for Montgomery Co. Jones finally made his season debut last week, and if Canada is able to make it back, the Indians could be a threat to knock upset Paris or GRC in the 40th district if they can have everyone healthy by then.

Agreed. At full strength, they will improve in a big way.

And think on this. I cannot possibly attend even a fraction of the regional games. You want someone from from your school to be considered as the player of the week - send me a PM. Some members are good about posting "their team's" stats on the site. We see them from Campbell, Scott, Clark, Brossart, Mason for just about every game; and sometimes Bracken, Pendleton and a couple others. The rest - not so much.
