Inside the 3rd Region(1/9)

Recommended Posts

As for now, there seems to be a slight gap between #1 Apollo and everyone else. Hancock keeps winning games against lesser competition, and their record is impressive no matter who they have played. There doesn't seem to be much of a gap between #2 and #7-8 . Everyone is beating each other, making it difficult to stack them...

.Apollo Eagles(13-1) – SAME – Apollo ran its winning streak to 13 straight this week, with 2 2nd half comeback wins. On Friday, Apollo rallied from 5 down at the half to knock of district rival, Daviess County. Nathan Boyle knocked down 5 2nd half 3’s to lead the charge. He and Zach Hopewell both finished with 21. Saturday, Apollo rallied from 7 down in the 4th quarter to defeat Central Hardin 56-54 in overtime. Hopewell was huge again for the Eagles, winning game MVP honors. He hit a 3 in the final minute of regulation to force overtime and 2 3’s in the final minute of overtime, including the game winner with 5 seconds left. Hopewell finished with 30 points and is starting to emerge as one of the best players in Western Kentucky. Apollo plays its only game of the week on Friday, against Owensboro Catholic.

.Hancock County Hornets(15-1) – UP 1 – The Hornets just keep rolling as they extended their win streak to 9, with 3 wins this past week. On Tuesday, they knocked off Breck County in Harned. They knocked down 3 free throws in the final seconds to pick up the 41-40 win. Jaxson Gray was fouled while shooting a 3 with 3 seconds left and hit all 3. He finished with 17. On Friday, Hancock knocked off Tell City 55-52. Jacob White led the Hornets with 15. On Saturday, Hancock traveled to Jeffersonville, Indiana and knocked off Madison Christian, IN 86-30. Austin Daughtery was named MVP of the game. The Hornets are getting nice contributions from 5-6 different guys right now. Hancock has a huge district game this Tuesday as they host Meade County. Meade gave the Hornets their only loss of the season, but are without all region forward James Baker. On Saturday, they travel to Cloverport to take on the Aces in the opening round of the All-A classic.

.Muhlenberg County Mustangs(9-6) – DOWN 1 – After a lopsided defeat at the hands of #1 Trinity, its hard to not drop the Mustangs further down the poll. That said, im not sure any team in the region is within 20 points of the Shamrocks right now. Muhlenberg has played a brutal schedule thus far, but still have a respectable 9 wins. Playing this competition should really help them against 3rd region teams. They get back in action this Tuesday at Mclean County, then host a nice Russellville team on Thursday before traveling to OHS on Friday.

.Owensboro Red Devils(7-8) – UP 3 – Owensboro makes the jump over their 9th district competition this week with another big win over Owensboro Catholic 62-51. Jacoby Harris had 18 in the win. Lance Lewis was big off the bench, knocking down 4 3’s to finish with 12 points. OHS kept pace with Apollo in the race for #1 seed in the district, moving to 3-1 in district play. The win stopped a 3 game losing streak for OHS and could help them turn the corner as they start to play a little easier schedule. They have a big regional matchup with Muhlenberg on Friday before traveling to Taylor County this Saturday.

.Owensboro Catholic Aces(9-6) – SAME – The Aces continued their up and down season this week, losing a big district game to OHS before bouncing back with a win over Grayson County at home on Saturday. JD Marshall continued to impress against the Devils, as he finished with 19 points. On Saturday, it was Jacob Mulchay who led the way for Catholic with 19. Luke Hayden bounced back with 18. The Aces host Whitesville Trinity at home on Tuesday before traveling to Apollo on Friday. The game vs Apollo is big for district seeding, as Catholic is just 1-3 in district play.

.Daviess County Panthers(10-6) – SAME – It was a mixed bag for the Panthers this week. On Tuesday, they got an impressive road win over Greenwood, 66-60. Jay Owen erupted for 26 points and Tyler Bowling went for 10/7 in the victory. They carried that momentum into Friday’s clash with Apollo, and played very well for a half. They led by 5 at the break, but were outscored by 17 in the 2nd half. Tyler Boling had a monster game in defeat, scoring 21 points. DC gets to return home for the first time in nearly a month, as they host Breck County on Tuesday and Ohio County on Friday.

.Ohio County Eagles(7-8) – UP 1 – Winners of 4 of their last 5, you can see this Ohio County team starting to turn the corner. They got a blowout win over district rival Mclean County on Saturday, 80-54. The Eagles placed 5 guys in double figures in the win(Conner Wilson 15, Ross Tichenor 14, Jay Newcom 13, Dylan Decker & John Parker 12). Tony Hopper will try to keep the momentum alive as the Eagles host Grayson County on Tuesday, before traveling to Daviess County on Friday.

.Meade County Greenwaves(8-7) – DOWN 4 – Since starting the season 8-1, Meade has dropped their last 7 games. 4 of those losses came without the services of all region forward and 3rd region player of the year candidate, James Baker. Baker was averaging 21ppg before the injury. Hopefully he can return for the postseason. Now Coach Tripture is left with a tough task, as the Waves are left without anyone who contributed to the regional runner up last season. They have a big time district matchup at Hancock County on Tuesday before returning home to take on Elizabethtown on Friday.

.Edmonson County Wildcats(6-6) – UP 1 - Winners of 6 of their last 7, the Wildcats continue their climb into the top 10. They got a nice 75-68 win in Butler County on Tuesday and don’t play again until Friday against Grayson County at home. The Cats are led by Caleb Skaggs & Bailey Board at 14ppg. Iszak Blankenship is flirting with a double double average at 12 points and 7 boards per game. On Saturday, Edmonson travels to Cloverport to take on Trinity in the 3rd Region All-A Tournament.

.Grayson County Cougars(7-8) – DOWN 1 – Grayson split a pair of games this week, first knocking off Whitesville Trinity 51-48. Bailey Logsdon had 21 big points in the district win. On Saturday, the Cougars played Owensboro Catholic tough, before falling 59-50. Trey Goff hit 5 3 pointers to finish with 17 points. Grayson goes on the road this week to take on Ohio County on Tuesday and then to Edmonson County on Friday for a big 12th district matchup.

.Butler County Bears(3-8) – SAME – While Butler has dropped 7 of their last 8 games, no one behind them has done much either. The Bears are a talented bunch, but seem to be underachieving a little bit at this point in the season. They showed glimpses of what they could be last week, pushing #2 Hancock into double overtime. Rex Henderson, Baylee Anderson and Will Moore all average double figure scoring at 13ppg. The Bears are back in action tonight vs Cloverport. They host Trinity on Thursday before traveling to Mclean on Friday.

.Breck County Tigers(3-10) – SAME – The young Tigers started the season 2-1 but have since won only once in their last 9 outings. They nearly knocked off Hancock this week, but a foul on a 3 pointer with 3 seconds left, cost them the game. They suffered a big setback to Louisville Holy Cross on Saturday, 74-46. Sophomore Kobe Poole leads with way for the Tigers, at 15ppg. They have 2 tough games this week, traveling to DC on Tuesday before hosting John Hardin on Thursday.

.Mclean County(2-8) – SAME – Mclean County doesn’t sport the record Cloverport or Trinity do, but the Cougars have played a much tougher schedule. They were not competitive against Ohio County on Saturday, losing by nearly 30 points. They have another tough district game at home against Muhlenberg on Tuesday and host Butler on Friday.

.Cloverport Aces(6-9) – SAME – The Aces got a win over Cannelton on Tuesday 71-57 before losing to St Francis 66-55 on Friday. Steven Jennings leads the Aces at 14ppg. Cloverport plays Butler County tonight and Hopkins Central on Thursday. They host the All-A tournament on Saturday, as they open against Hancock County.

.Trinity Raiders(5-8) – SAME – Trinity dropped its lone game of the week, a very competitive district loss to Grayson County 51-48. The lone starter returning from last year, Eric Howard leads the team with 13ppg. Trinity travels to Owensboro Catholic on Tuesday & to Butler on Thursday before heading to Cloverport for the All-A tournament to take on Edmonson County.
