This week's edition arrives a day later after a long holiday weekend. The top 3 teams stayed consistent but it has become tougher and tougher each week ranking the teams from there. Here is where teams inside the 9th region stand as we get ready to head in to the New Year.

1. Covington Catholic (9-2)

After a tough loss to Trinity (70-60) in the King of the Bluegrass semi finals, the Colonels responded with a 67-50 win over the top ranked team in the state, Bowling Green, and then beat a struggling Boone County, 73-36. Cole Vonhandorf and CJ Fredrick led the Colonels in the loss to Trinity with 21 and 19, with AJ Mayer posting a double double (13 pts, 11 rbs). Fredrick finished with 34 against Bowling Green, while VonHandorf had 17. In the Colonels final game before Christmas, Vonhandorf (20), Fredrick (17), Jake Walter (12 pts, 15 rbs), and AJ Mayer (11) all reached double figures.

The Colonels will unfortunately be without leading scorer CJ Fredrick for 6-8 weeks as he suffered a fractured foot over the week end. This is a major blow for the Colonels as he was having a player of the year type season at 23 ppg and doing it all at both ends of the floor.

Up Next: 12/27 v Pope John XXIII, NJ; 12/28 v St Augustine Prep, NJ (Both games at St Anthony, NJ --Skyline Classic)

2. Cooper (6-3)

The Jags responded to a two game losing streak by defeating Fairdale (107-71) and West Jessamine (91-63). Sean McNeil (21 pts, 8 rbs), Adam Kunkel (19), Chris McNeil (15), and Brayden Runion (11 and 7) led the Jaguars against Fairdale, with McNeil and Kunkel both having 16 against West Jessamine. Brayden Runion had 15, while Dante Hendrix had 11 against West Jessamine.

Up Next: 12/28 v Dunbar/Sheldon Clark/Russelville Winner; 12/29-12/30 v TBA at Lexington Catholic (Traditional Bank Holiday Classic)

3. Dixie Heights (8-1)

Dixie won the Simon Kenton Invitational by posting wins over Aiken, OH (55-39), Central Hardin (68-56), and host Simon Kenton (60-49). Reed Bradfield led Dixie in the Central Hardin win with 17 points, while Hunter Meyer and Cam Thornberry both had 14 points. In the Championship win over Simon Kenton, Meyer finished strong with 21 points followed by Thornberry and Schreck with 16 and 11 points.

Up Next: 12/27 v North Oldham at South Oldham; 12/28-12/29 at South Oldham (Mitchell F Irvin Classic)

4. Newport Central Catholic (4-4)

Newcath started the week with a lopsided loss to top 5 ranked Scott County (75-47) but rebounded with a 60-52 win over Holy Cross. Brennan Hall had 26 points in the loss to Scott County, followed by 12 from Luke Moeves. In the win over Holy Cross, it was a balanced effort as Hall and Stevie Pangallo both finished with 11 points, while Luke Moeves and Brendan Luken led the Breds with 12, each.

Up Next: 12/27 v Central Hardin at Apollo (Apollo Holiday Classic)

5. Beechwood (7-2)

While some might question this because of the Tigers' schedule so far, they are playing very well right now. Ben Toebbe had 24 pts, 12 rebounds in a 63-47 road win over Williamstown and followed that up with 29 points, 8 rebounds in a 79-43 win over Henry County. It's tough to know for sure if Beechwood is the 5th best team in the region right now, but their only losses are by 3 to Bracken County and 4 to #3 Dixie Heights.

Up Next: 12/27 v Meade County at Eastern; 12/27 at Eastern (City of Middletown Holiday Classic)

6. Holmes (5-4)

The Bulldogs enter this week on a three game losing streak after falling to Campbell County (73-63) and Walton Verona (62-47). Rico Hollis and LJ Miller led the Bulldogs in the loss to Campbell County with 17 and 14 points. Miller also led the Bulldogs in the Walton loss with 14. The score of the Walton game is a bit misleading as Holmes played without 6'5 senior Jaiden Greene and leading scorer, Rico Hollis, sat out the entire first half.

Up Next: 12/28 v Conner at Lloyd (Lloyd Memorial Invitational)

7. Ryle (6-5)

Ryle has now won 4 of their past 5 after going 3-1 this past week with wins over West Jessamine (68-66), Frankfort (82-47), and North Oldham (70-55) and a loss to John Hardin (88-66). Braden Cheesman had a career high 26 points in the win over West Jessamine and followed that up with 18 against Frankfort. 10. Lloyd (7-3)

After starting 5-0, the Juggs have lost three of the past five, including losses to Gallatin County (62-54) and Highlands (67-62) this past week. The one win was a 69-63 win over Aiken, OH. Devin McClendon had 20 and 15 points against Gallatin County and Highlands, while Hamilton Sterling had 17 in the loss to the Bluebirds. A lot of questions surrounding this team right now which is why they dropped all the way to #10 from #4.

Up Next: 12/28 v Woodford County ; 12/29-12/30 v TBA (Lloyd Memorial Invitational)

11. Highlands (3-7)

Highlands one spot ahead of Boone. The Rebs beat Highlands in the head to head match-up, no?

3 point road loss for the Birds second game of the year....

Could switch the two and I don't think you'd be wrong. I just like Highlands a little more this week. With there being little separation, you are going to see 4 through 11/12 move around a lot throughout the rest of the season.

I can't get a 25 point loss to Williamstown out of my head. I'd side with Boone - as bad as they're struggling.

Then Lloyd should be below both Highlands and Boone. Highlands with a big victory over Lloyd.
