article 10th Region Recap and Rankings - 12/26

The week ending on Christmas day was a quiet one in the 10th. Little if anything transpired to shake up the rankings. Some teams were idle for the entire week, others competed in holiday tournaments and showcases. Here's the way ol' pap sees things for now.

1. Campbell County (9-1, 3-1 region. If anything, the Camels cemented their hold on the top spot last week. First was a ten-point win over 9th region foe Holmes behind Cole Hegyi's 35. Next was a 97-26 romp over the Cougars of Calvary Christian, with coach Russell's squad putting 13 players in the scoring column. The Camels finished the week with a 66-52 win over St. Henry, hitting eight 3-pointers in the process. Campbell heads over to Erlanger this week for Lloyd's holiday tourney.

2. Scott (7-3, 4-0 region). Scott went 2-1 last week in the Simon Kenton holiday tournament, dropping a nail-biter to Central Hardin, then winning 67-57 over Aiken, and finally mounting a furious fourth-quarter comeback to defeat Highlands 71-59. Little brother Chad Ohmer was the Eagles' high scorer in that one with 21. Scott is participating in the Traditional Bank Holiday Classic this week.

3. Clark County (6-4, 3-1 region). The Cardinals improved their stock last week and are poised to overtake Scott this week. First was a 71-45 dismantling of the Ashland Tomcats behind Will Philpot and Chase Taylor, then an impressive win over Jeffersontown by the score of 62-42 with Philpot again leading the way with a 19/18 double-double. The Cards also head over to Lexington Catholic for the Traditional Bank Classic.

4. Paris (6-4, 4-1 region). Coach Brooks and the Greyhounds got back on track last week, breaking a 3-game skid with two road wins. A 76-51 decision over Wolfe County was followed up with a 71-53 win over 10th region foe Nicholas County. Paris is scheduled to play North Gwinnett (GA) today at LexCath.

5. Mason County (7-4, 3-2 region). The Royals stayed home last week, hosting the Murph Classic at The Fieldhouse. First was a wild and crazy 1-point squeaker over Madison Central, with Leevi Dunaway leading the way with 25 points and 4 steals. Things were a little easier the next night as Coach Biggs' charges bolted out to a 37-8 lead over Harrison County en route to the 89-70 final; Dunaway with a dozen dimes to go along with another 25 points. Starter Isaiah Garrison injured an ankle early in the Harrison County game and is scheduled to be evaluated today. The Royals play only one game this week, facing Boyle County at Montgomery County's Gateway Classic on Tuesday.

6. Bracken County (5-4, 4-2 region). Coach Hinson's Polar Bears also participated in the Murph in Maysville, first defeating Harrison County 69-57 behind the balanced scoring of Austin Crawford, Cooper Engnes and Brady Jones, then dropping a 62-57 nailbiter to Madison Central. Bracken's next game is in the AIT where they face off against Bullitt East.

7. Bourbon County (4-6, 2-2 region). The Colonels went 2-1 against out-of-state competition last week at Hilton Head. They travel to Powell County and the Red River Classic for three games this week.

8. Pendleton County (5-5, 2-2 region). Pendleton went 2-1 last week at the Bellevue tourney with wins over Dayton and John Magregor of Canada bookending a loss to Newport. Coach Belcher's Wildcats are slated to play a trio of games in this week's Henry County Invitational, starting with Collins.

9. Nicholas County (5-4, 3-3 region). The rest of the region wasn't able to crack the "elite eight". Nicholas dropped two games last week against good competition - 67-44 to surprising Williamstown and 71-53 versus Paris. Nicholas also plays in this week's Red River Classic.

10. Montgomery County (3-7, 0-2 region. The Indians started the week dropping a 55-41 decision to a pretty good Lincoln County squad, with Brennan Canada tallying 17. A 59-50 win over Campbellsville broke a 7-game win streak as Coach Daniel still awaits the return of Jeryd Jones. MoCo hosts this week's Gateway Classic.

11. Harrison County (1-8, 0-4) dropped a pair at the Fieldhouse, and also travels to Powell County to take on 9th region foe Boone County.

12. Robertson County (7-3, 1-2). Idle last week, Coach Kelsch and the Black Devils are off until January 3rd.

13. Augusta (5-5, 2-3) split a pair, losing a close one to Bath County, then handling 39th district rival St. Patrick at home by the count of 66-50. The Panthers cross the river to play three games at Ripley this week.

14. Bishop Brossart (2-9, 1-1) went 1-2 in last week's Bellevue tourney and were led by Zach Hamberg who scored 24 in each of the first two games. Brossart travels to Greenup this week.

15. Calvary Christian (4-4, 1-3) lost a close one to Ludlow and a not-so-close one to Campbell County.

16. St. Patrick (4-6, 0-3) went 1-2 at Rose Hill's small private school tourney last week, and joins Augusta this week at Ripley.

17. Silver Grove (0-7, 0-1) was idle last week.

Player of the week:

Clark County's Will Philpot followed up a 12/9 effort against Ashland with 19 and 18 against Jeffersontown.

Games to watch this week:

Most of this week's games are TBA tournament contests. Catch 10th region teams in action at Lexington Catholic, Mount Sterling, Lloyd, Ashland, New Castle, etc.

Nice job Papa. Meant to say that last week. I like to read the narrative especially as you try to bring logic to something that most weeks defies logic.

Scott did not look good at all today. I haven't seen Campbell play, but based on their results it sounds like they are a long way ahead of the rest of the region.

(Mrs. Judy Rose congratulates Will Philpot as the Player of the Game in the Central Bank Jim Rose Classic. Will led all players with 19 points and 18 rebounds.)

Great job Will. Not only a good player but even a better kid. Congrats!!!

Of special note is that Josh Cook's GRC team has 10 juniors and 7 sophomores only making up the full roster. Originally, thought this was a building strategy that took a lot of guts to cut experienced seniors. Then I looked at last year's roster and saw it had zero juniors to be seniors this year. Candidly, have not seen GRC play yet; but, their #3 ranking this week with a full roster of underclassmen could project exciting things to come in Clark Co. Amazing to me that a school the size of GRC could have a whole class with zero basketball players.

Zero senior basketball players, I'm assuming you meant, oldercoach.

Similar situation at Mason County. Although nowhere near the size of Clark County, only one senior who is first and foremost a football player; and hasn't played this year due to injury.

Originally, thought this was a building strategy that took a lot of guts to cut experienced seniors. Then I looked at last year's roster and saw it had zero juniors to be seniors this year. Candidly, have not seen GRC play yet; but, their #3 ranking this week with a full roster of underclassmen could project exciting things to come in Clark Co. Amazing to me that a school the size of GRC could have a whole class with zero basketball players.

Talent seems to come by classes. Just happens that this Junior class is loaded. As Freshman they won the 10th Region tourney. We had 75 kids go out for basketball this year. Yes the future looks very bright as this team gets better every game. We just beat a very good Brethitt Co team in the Lex Cath tourney.
