Inside the 14th Region - Week 3

Another wild week of high school basketball took place last week. Let’s take a look back at the action in the 14th region.

 

1.Knott County Central (8-1):

After suffering an embarrassing 82-59 loss to Scott County in the Peggy Moore Memorial Classic @ Breathitt County, the Patriots re-grouped and picked up 3 consecitive wins, defeating Hazard 78-49, Pike Central 85-45 and traveling down the road to Cordia and defeating the Lions 82-70.

 

Senior guard, Austin Combs has scored 37 points combine to led the Patriots to 2 of those 3 wins.

 

2.Perry County Central (5-1):

The Commodores have put together a 3 game win streak themselves, one of the teams they defeated was Cordia at home 84-80. Perry Central would clash with 15th region powerhouse Johnson Central at the John C. Combs Arena in Hazard and what a battle it would be before the Commodores escaped with a 87-81 victory, handing the Golden Eagles their 1st loss on the season. The very next night, the ‘Dores would travel across town to take on arch rival, Hazard, game wouldn’t be as close as some thought, in fact, Perry Central had a 53-36 lead in the 3rd quarter before Hazard would make a run to end the game.

 

Sophomore guard, Noah Back led the Commodores with 23 points including 7 trey’s.

 

3.Cordia (3-3):

The Lions started the season off 2-0 but have since went 1-3 in their last 4 games, with their only win coming over district foe, Letcher Central 67-63 in OT. 2 of the 3 losses the Lions have suffered, where against #1 Knott Central (82-70) and #2 Perry Central (84-80).

 

Junior guard, Kareem McDonald continues to carry the Lions on his back, in fact, the junior guard has scored a total of 111 points this season through 6 games, that’s 19 points a game.

 

 

4.Letcher County Central (5-2):

Letcher Central had their 4 game win streak snapped and was handed their 2nd loss on the season when they fell in OT to district foe, Cordia 67-63. The Cougars would bounce back and defeat Eminence 91-77 over in the Berea Invitational Tournament.

Senior forward, Torrell Carter, keeps on keeping on, filling up the basket every game. Scoring over 156 total points so far this season.

 

5.Estill County (7-2):

Estill County had their game win streak snapped when they fell to Madison Southern 47-39. Estill County would bounce back and bounce back in a big way, defeating Rockcastle County 76-70, Engineers had a 20 point led on the Rockets before Rockcastle would make a run in the 3Q to get back in the game. Engineers traveled to Garrard County this weekend to participate in the Elleman Contracting Garrard Holiday Classic, picking up 2 out of 3 wins, losing their first game, 67-49 to Danville but defeating Bell County 43-39 and Model 69-54.

 

Estill County head coach, Jon Bentley picked up his 100th career win when his Engineers defeated Richmond Model on Monday 69-54.

 

Junior guard Caleb Bonny has scored 30+ points in 3 of Estill’s games this season. The junior guard has scored 172 total points on the season, heading into the Garrard County tournament.

 

6.Powell County (6-2):

After suffering a loss, not a bad loss, but a loss to Scott County 96-81, the Pirates have put together an impressive 4 game win streak, 3 of their 4 wins were by 15+ points and 2 of them were against district opponents, Lee County and Owsley County.

 

Powell County has a tough task tomorrow morning when they try to knock down #4, Letcher Central, over in the Berea Invitational.

 

7.Breathitt County (6-2):

Much like a lot of teams, the Bobcats has put together a win streak themselves, 3 games, that is. 2 of those 3 wins, they have reached the 100 point mark, defeating Riverside Christian 101-38 and Wolfe County 102-81. The Bobcats were 16 points off of that mark when they defeated Fleming County on Saturday 84-64.

 

8.Leslie County (6-1):

Coach Daniel Day and his Eagles picked up 3 convincing wins last week when they defeated, Portland Christian 85-54, Williamsburg 75-55 and Jenkins 86-41. The Eagles have the rest of the week off to prepare for their own tournament, when they open up with Garrard County. In all of Leslie County’s games this season, the Eagles have reached the 70 point mark in every single game this season, that’s filling up the basket in a hurry and often.

 

9.Hazard (3-4):

The Bulldogs started the season off 2-0 but then hit a 4 game losing streak, some of those losses were bad, losing 78-49 to Knott Central and 70-64 to Perry Central. The Bulldogs got this week started off right when they defeated Jackson City 75-51 tonight but tomorrow gets a little tougher when they host the Breathitt Bobcats. The Bulldogs travel to Owsley County on Wednesday. 3 games in 3 days for the Dawgs.

 

10.Wolfe County (2-5):

Despite being 2-5, the Wolves always find a way to make noise before the season is out and they’ve already showed that they are capable of beating anyone in the region when they took the Patriots of Knott Central to the wire, before falling 92-87 in OT.

 

11.Buckhorn (4-7):

The defending regional champions are having a tough times finding their grove. After defeating Jackson City 62-52 back on December 6th, the Wildcats took a 5 game losing streak into Butler County this week.

 

12.Jackson City (3-7):

The Tigers picked up 2 quality wins last week, defeating Lee County 75-45 and Oneida Baptist Institute 55-52.

 

13.Lee County (1-8):

After defeating Red Bird to open up the season, Lee County has went on an 8 game win streak, and according to the schedule, they don’t play again until December 30th when they host Menifee County.

 

14.Owsley County (1-6):

Much like Lee County, the Owls went on a 6 game losing streak until they defeated Jenkins 75-71.

 

15.Jenkins (0-8):

The Cavaliers are having a tough time putting their 1st W in the Win Column.

 

16.June Buchanan (0-7):

The Crusaders are struggling to get wins. All of their losses have been by 15+ points and all of their losses, they have given up 65+ points per game in each of those games.

 

17.Riverside Christian (1-9):

After picking up their first win, the Rams have dropped 4 straight but have outscored both Jenkins and June Buchanan both and not to mention, they’ve outscored Hazard as well.
