Class 1A

The game that raised the eyebrows of most pundits over the weekend was Kentucky Country Day's surprising lopsided victory over District foe Louisville Holy Cross. In other action of note Paintsville easily handled Fairview strengthening their standing in the Class 1A pecking order. This week there will be no match-ups between ranked foes, but a pair of critical District games will highlight the docket. Bishop Brossart is suddenly surging and will square up a Paris team that nearly handed Nicholas County their first loss. In Southern Kentucky, Williamsburg will get a firm test from Pineville.

2. Russellville vs. Fulton City

3. Raceland at Fairview

4. Beechwood at Ludlow (10/13)

5. Pikeville at Lucasville Valley (OH)

10. Williamsburg at Pineville

Class 2A

Perhaps the biggest game of the year in Class 2A was the renewal of the battle between DeSales and CAL. The Centurions rode a strong defensive effort and made the plays in the clutch to secure the key win. On the Eastern side of the Commonwealth two huge contests helped shape the playoff picture also spurred by strong defensive showings. Newport Central Catholic shut out Covington Holy Cross at Newport Stadium, elsewhere Danville took a strong shot from Somerset but sealed the game away late while limiting the Briar Jumper Offense. The focus remains in those same Districts as both Newport Central Catholic and Somerset each have one more stiff challenge awaiting. Lloyd Memorial will take aim at NewCath, whereas Somerset will try to keep their hopes of a 3-way tie alive when they challenge undefeated Lexington Christian Academy.

1. Mayfield at Ballard Memorial

2. Christian Academy- Louisville vs. Shawnee

3. DeSales vs. Washington County

4. Owensboro Catholic vs. Todd County Central

5. Danville at Middlesboro

6. Newport Central Catholic at Lloyd Memorial

7. Lexington Christian Academy at #10 Somerset

8. Covington Holy Cross at Newport

9. Glasgow at Monroe County

10. Somerset vs. #7 Lexington Christian Academy

Class 3A

This past weekend's key hot spot was Region 2, specifically District 4 which featured four of the State's Top 15 teams squaring off. At the end of the day, it was the two familiar names in Boyle County and Lexington Catholic that prevailed. In District 3, Bardstown remains undefeated despite a major scare from Louisville Moore. Region 4 heats up even more this week when the previously mentioned Lexington Catholic and Boyle will do battle in what may very well establish the early favorite in the Western Semi-State. Bardstown will now take on the reigning kings of District 3 as they will challenge Central. A game a bit more off the radar, but not one to overlook, will be Adair County and Elizabethtown in District 2 action.

1. Belfry vs. Warrensville Heights (OH)

2. Corbin vs. Bell County

3. Boyle County at #4 Lexington Catholic

4. Lexington Catholic vs. #3 Boyle County

5. Caldwell County at Fort Campbell

6. Central at #7 Bardstown

7. Bardstown vs. #6 Central

8. Russell vs. Lewis County

9. Elizabethtown vs. Adair County

10. Casey County at Jackson County

Class 4A

The hot bed of Class 4A was Region 3. Previously undefeated Taylor County fell to surging East Jessamine while Wayne County bounced back with a very hard fought win over Knox Central. Unlike Class 3A, where we are quickly getting clarity on Region 2, Class 4A has a jumbled mess specifically in District 4. Franklin County seemed to be trending downward but their victory over Spencer County helped to bring further disarray. Spencer County now must rebound quickly with Shelby County visiting this weekend.

1. Johnson Central at Rowan County

2. Franklin-Simpson -- OPEN

3. South Warren vs. Allen County-Scottsville

4. Hopkinsville at Calloway County

5. Rockcastle County at Clay County

6. John Hardin at Valley

7. Wayne County vs. Russell County

8. Knox Central -- OPEN

9. Shelby County at Spencer County

10. Ashland at Greenup County

Class 5A

On a slate of games that featured no contests with two ranked foes, it was 5A's most decorated program that made headlines. Highlands fell to Dixie Heights and with it gave the Blue Birds their sixth loss and assured a losing regular season, a loss this week against rival Covington Catholic would result in no home playoff games for Highlands. A team who is definitely on the winning side of the columns is South Oldham who remains undefeated following a convincing win over Bullitt East. A game to keep an eye on in Western Kentucky will be Christian County versuses Graves County. The Eagles need a statement win and Christian County would serve that purpose. A game that may be overlooked is in District 8 where surprising Whitley County will take on a Harlan County team who has a mis-leading record. Expect this game to determine the home field advantage for the Eastern Semi-State.

1. Bowling Green at Barren County

2. Covington Catholic at Highlands

3. Greenwood at Grayson County

4. Pulaski County at South Laurel

5. Owensboro vs. Apollo

6. Christian County vs. Graves County

7. Southwestern vs. Lincoln County

8. Fern Creek vs. Iroquois (10/15)

9. South Oldham at Bullitt Central

10. Dixie Heights vs Grant County (10/13)

Class 6A

It was a must-see shootout in Northern Kentucky as Ryle outlasted Cooper. Madison Central used some Thursday action to make a statement by obliterating surging Tates Creek. In Louisville, St. Xavier asserted their role as a Jefferson County elite by handing Manual their first loss in a very competitive match-up. The Tigers or the Indians do not have time to celebrate as now Male awaits St. X and Lafayette awaits Madison Central. Ryle also does not have a walk in the park a week removed from their big win, Conner may not have a number by their name but the 6-1 Cougars are not going to go easily into the night.

1. Trinity vs. Seneca

2. Male vs. #7 St. Xavier

3. Simon Kenton at Campbell County

4. Scott County at Bryan Station

5. Ryle at Conner

6. Lafayette vs. Madison Central

7. St. Xavier at #2 Male

8. DuPont Manual vs. Pleasure Ridge Park

9. Cooper vs. Boone County

10. Ballard vs. Jeffersontown
