CAL Defeats DeSales In Regular Season, DeSales Vows Revenge

Insert your favorite super hero movie now.

An epic battle ensues of Good vs. Bad. The plot twists and turns and in the end one side prevails by a narrow margin. In the wake of defeat revenge is vowed and either later in the movie, or in the sequel, we do it all over again. You can leave who is the antagonist or the protagonist up to personal taste, but the conclusion stays the same. CAL defeated DeSales 12-7 securing their sixth consecutive regular season victory over the Colts. The past four seasons has seen DeSales rally to get the last laugh.

If CAL wants to flip the script, they may finally have the starring characters. Sophomore phenom Milton Wright was sensational on both sides of the ball and had the majority of the games' key plays. Jacob Paulson also made a different on each side of the ball, specifically on a Force Field like Defense that the Colts found impenetrable for most of the night.

NewCath Once Again Shines With The District On The Line

Newport Central Catholic joined the Class 2A alignment in 2006 with the new 6-Class alignment. Since that day the Breds have yet to lose a single regular season game to 2A competition. Covington Holy Cross presented a strong challenge with a veteran squad with talented play makers, but the Breds earned a hard fought 21-0 victory at Newport Stadium.

NewCath, as evident by the shutout, leaned heavily on their Defense as they limited the Indians to a meager 186 Total Yards. The most impressive stat was the fact that Holy Cross actually completed 8 passes, but they totaled 51 yards, a meager average of just over 6 yards per completion. NewCath also put the clamps down to force three interceptions. Trent Wrobleski had a standout game with a game high 80 yards on 5 catches including a TD, he also was a key part of that dominant secondary and added several field position changing punts.

There will be no rest for NewCath and their regular season winning streak as they must now take on Lloyd Memorial. The Juggs also have a vaunted Defense, so for the second straight week expect scoring to be at a premium and for Special Teams to play a key role.

Walton-Verona Secures District 5

The Bearcats have a little dynasty of their own starting to brew as they essentially secured the District 5 Championship for fourth time in the past five seasons. The Dub-Vee was hit very hard by graduation entering this season and took some lumps early in the year, but have rallied nicely in District play to outscore their local foes a combined 92-3. Trimble County will be their next game and if the Raiders' recent games are any indication Walton-Verona may be able to successful hold another District foe without a trip over the goal line. Trimble has been outscored 175-0 over their past four games.

Are The Bombers Flying Under the Radar?

Ballard Memorial is not a team that typically resonates as a major threat in the 2A landscape and are also not a team noted for a particularly difficult Strength of Schedule. Looking at their 4-3 record and not seeing many powerhouse names it is easy to dismiss them as white noise, but this may be a year to take a deeper look.

Two of their three losses have came to Dresden, TN and Casey County. The Dresden Lions are now 7-0 on the year and have obliterated everything in their path. Ballard Memorial's 18 points are the only time this year they have allowed more than 6 points, in fact Dresden has shut out 5 of their 7 opponents. The Bombers' 2-point loss to Casey County is looking better and better. The 3A Rebels are 6-0 with perhaps one of the best teams in school history and have a strong shot at a 9-1 regular season record and perhaps even a trip to the Regional Finals.

Now does this mean Ballard Memorial is going to sneak up on #1 Mayfield? Most likely not. Mayfield is the best team they have seen all season and to keep it close would even be a long shot. With that said, Ballard Memorial is a team to keep an eye on come the Second Round of the playoffs if you want a team that might be able to pull one of those "Wow!" upsets that people otherwise would wonder where that even could have came from.
