Class 1A

 

All eyes were on Pikeville where District 8 was set to be determined in a match-up between Pikeville and Hazard. The Panthers earned a hard fought victory and all but assured themselves the advantage of home field throughout the playoffs. Three huge showdowns highlight this week’s action as Paintsville takes on Fairview and undefeated Nicholas County must try to fend off Paris. Another game to keep an eye on over in the Western Semi-State will be a huge District clash featuring Louisville Holy Cross and Kentucky Country Day, a pair of Top 10 teams.

Class 2A

 

DeSales continues to turn heads as they have seemingly found their form, the Colts made short work of a solid 6A North Hardin securing their status even further as one of Class 2A’s top title threats and set up this week’s premier match-up between the Colts and #2 Christian Academy- Louisville. In other action, Lloyd fail in a game effort against 6A Conner and Owensboro Catholic essentially earned a District Championship by crushing McLean County. Though CAL/DeSales will be the game with the most statewide attention, this week does not lack for monumental clashes. Newport Catholic and Holy Cross square off for Catholic Supremacy in Northern Kentucky 2A Football. Over in District 7 Somerset gets their shot at cracking the Top 10 with a huge game against Danville

Class 3A

 

The focus shifted to the Louisville Metro area where two huge games played out in the 3A pecking order. Central took down surprising Moore while Bardstown continued their undefeated start by making short work of Waggener. In District 5, Fleming County was no match for a Russell Defense that continues to play at a very high level. The biggest head turner of the week though was in Brownsville where the previously undefeated, and freshly ranked, Adair County Indians took a loss to the host Edmonson County Wildcats. This week the eyes of the class fix pretty firmly on a pair of huge District 4 clashes. Lexington Catholic is in desperate need of a win, but Western Hills enters red hot at 5-1. Meanwhile in Danville two Top 10 teams clash as Garrard County and Boyle square up in the biggest game of the week in 3A.

Class 4A

 

It is hard to argue that Class 4A District 7 is probably the toughest District in the classification with three teams among the Top 8 in the rankings. Rockcastle County had a giant circle around their home match with Wayne County after a disappointing playoff loss in 2015, and Friday the Rockets survived a thriller in bonus time to take the driver seat. Wayne County cannot lick their wounds for long as they must now take on Knox Central, a loss and the Cardinals suddenly must spend the playoffs on the road. Elsewhere in the same region East Jessamine gained a huge win by upsetting Mercer County. East now has a chance to essentially wrap up a District Title as they draw the surging Taylor County Cardinals this week who have won 5 straight games. The two clear cut #1 and #2 teams each will get a nice workout this week. Johnson Central draws a tough Greenup County squad while Franklin-Simpson will take on an Allen County-Scottsville squad that has rebounded from a tough 1-3 start to win three consecutive.

Class 5A

 

Owensboro fell from grace a bit after losing to cross town rival 2A Owensboro Catholic a few weeks back. The Red Devils had a prime opportunity to restore their clout against #3 Christian County and did just that by sneaking past the Colonels in the second Overtime. In perhaps the County with most parody in the state, Bullitt County, it was Bullitt Central who got a huge win by defeating rival Bullitt East in a defensive battle. The slate of games for this Week leaves a lot to be desired with no major clashes featuring Top 10 teams and the majority of the meaningful games seemingly having a clear favorite. The lone exception will be when Highlands and Dixie Heights clash. The Colonels know that Highlands has some internal questions and would love nothing more than to add to the building drama at the Birds’ Nest.

Class 6A

 

Trinity continued their dominance over bitter rival St. Xavier with a convincing win on a week where Class 6A saw a pair of key Jefferson County clashes. After a handful of game challenges, PRP was no match whatsoever for #2 Male. Out West, Muhlenberg County’s undefeated run fell to the wayside against Henderson County. Northern Kentucky is where the Class 6A drama will unfold this week with a pair of big time games. Conner has continued to win despite not looking like a dominant force and may be prone to upset against a Campbell County team hungry for a 6A statement win. The game that really takes the spotlight will be Cooper taking their talents to Union to take on Tanner Morgan and the Ryle Raiders.
