Class 2A Notebook 9/12- Thoughts Following "Seperation Friday"

It is no secret at this point that Class 2A appears to be one of the State's Strongest classifications pound per pound this season. The early season success of the class playing up against larger class schools has been well documented and as Non-District play begins to wear down we continue to see the prowess of the class shine through. This past week though finally began to give us clarity in terms of how the pecking order of this class appears.

The Champs Look Like the Champs

For all of Class 2A's successes on the early season "playing up" the one thing that they had not been able to solidify was a win against a Top 10 team from the State's Largest Classification. The Cardinals entered their match-up with local rival McCracken County as an underdog in most people's eyes but the Cardinals were able to overcome the larger roster size and broader 2-deep of the Mustangs to jump out to a 25-7 lead. The Cards withstood a late comeback to secure a 46-41 win.

This is a game that should serve notice to the rest of the classification as few 2A Teams have the sheer athleticism and size to match McCracken. Unfortunately for Mayfield though, the win came at a cost as standout RB Trajan Bright suffered an elbow injury that may sideline him for an extended amount of time.

3A East vs. 2A East= Advantage 3A

An interesting sidebar this past week was the rare opportunity to see the 2015 Semi-Finalists from Class 2A and Class 3A's Eastern Semi-State square off on the same night. The two Eastern delegates to the State Final squared off in Newport as NewCath welcomed 3A #1 Belfry. The Breds battled valiantly on Defense for a Half before Belfry's size and big play ability ultimately overwhelmed them in a 41-8 loss. The silver lining for NewCath is they were able to not only slow down the Belfry freight train, but they actually did a good job limiting the effectiveness of Belfry's stable of fleet footed Halfbacks.

In Title Town, the mood entering the Admirals game against #2 3A Corbin was one chock full of optimism. The Ads had been ultra impressive early in the season and had handled the Redhounds the previous year in a game marred by Corbin snap issues. This year though the tables turned in more ways than one. Not only did Corbin control the clock and assert their will in a 28-7 win, but it was Danville who struggled with the shotgun snap with several costly miscues that slowed drives.

Beam Me Up Scotties!

The Glasgow football program has been one of the more under the radar powerhouses in Kentucky History and over the past decade have found a nice niche as one of those consistently good teams that makes a push into the middle of November. Last season Glasgow seemingly took a large step back by their standards with a disappointing 6-6 season that tempered expectations entering the 2016 campaign.

The Scotties have became one of the more pleasant surprises of this season as they have jumped out to a 3-0 start (one game was cancelled due to lightning). This past week Glasgow took on a pretty solid 4A Allen County-Scottsville and earned a hard fought 28-26 win.

The Scotties are led on Offense by QB Dessi Austin who averages 214 passing yards per game and has thrown 8 TD's as opposed to only a lone Interception. LB Steven Franklin is a D-1 prospect and has been an anchor on the opposite side of the ball along with Evan Riddle who has already pulled down 3 Interceptions.

Looking ahead at their schedule you can expect the Scotties to roll into their September 23 meeting with Greenwood sporting a 4-0 record. The 5A Gators are a Top 10 team and will provide possibly the stiffest regular season test for Glasgow, but if the Scotties can somehow pull out a "W" they will quickly emerge as a team firmly in the picture as a contender in an already loaded Western side of the bracket.

The Rebels' Last Stand

On the subject of undefeated teams, at this point only five 2A teams remain unblemished and one name is probably the most surprising of the lot, Allen Central. Jeremy Hall's "Runnin' Rebs" rolled to a 52-8 win over 1A Jenkins to improve to 3-0 on the season.

For those that do not know, Allen Central does not refer to Allen County, but instead it is a Floyd County school from Eastern Kentucky. This is in fact the last year for Allen Central's program as they will be consolidated into the new Floyd County Central High School starting in 2017. This Friday the Rebels will look to continue their hot start against 1A South Floyd. This is a bit of an oddity. It is rare that you get to see two teams play each other before they consolidate and become teammates. The Battle of Beaver Creek will pit the underclassmen as rivals before they join together next season wearing the same jersey.

Game of the Week

#3 DeSales vs. 5A #4 Fern Creek

We are still not quite into the District Slate of the 2016 season, so another week of games featuring 2A teams challenging all comers rests on the docket. Last year Fern Creek ended DeSales winning streak with a 14-0 defensive struggle. The Colts need momentum and with a brutal three game stretch beginning with the 3-1 Tigers this could be a watershed type of game.
