The Bigger They Are...

With the season now fully in effect it is becoming very clear that this is going to be an especially talented group of teams near the top of the 2A Ranks. Typically Weeks 0,1,and 2 are chock full of non-district games and matchups between teams from different classes, but this past week was an especially interesting week as many of the top 10 teams in 2A squared up schools that are well more than double their size. Six different Top 10 2A Teams took on a foe that is either hailing from Class 5A or 6A, and the little guys showed very well! The 2A squads went a combined 5-1 in those games winning by a cumulative score of 189-116. The most impressive victory was probably #4 Danville who took out a ranked Southwestern on a neutral field.

Brody Johnson Goes Off

One of the best kept secrets in Class 2A when it comes to individual players is East Ridge's RB Brody Johnson. Johnson ran for right at 2000 yards in 2015 despite missing time with an injury. He began 2016 with a bang in the Pike County Bowl by rushing for over 300 yards and scoring all five of his team's TD's in a 38-18 win over Phelps. If Johnson can stay healthy the odds are good that he could end up as one of the State's Top 5 rushers against a favorable schedule and a District that for the most part has taken significant hits due to graduation.

His stiffest opposition though will come against the early District Favorite Leslie County...

The Williamsburg Test

Comparing scores can get you in trouble, but for those that take some merit in comparing the results of a common opponent the first three weeks of the season have one common interesting denominator to analyze 2A teams. The 1A Williamsburg Yellowjackets will take on three of the 2A Eastern Semi State's top teams in three consecutive weeks concluding with this weekend's matchup against Leslie County. In Week 0 #7 Lexington Christian Academy needed a late comeback to defeat the Jackets, this past weekend it was Top 15 Somerset who needed a late surge for a 42-27 win.

Leslie County is an intriguing team. The Eagles return a ton of experience but lost most of their star power. Thus far the Eagles have looked sharp against a couple lower ranked 3A teams and have yet to allow a point.

On Deck This Weekend

Expect more of what we just saw this week as four more Top 10 teams will step up to play teams from the State's two highest classifications. The biggest storyline though will be Class 2A picking a fight with Class 3A.

#2 CAL takes on the #4 3A Central Yellowjackets. Last year Central won a well played gae 28-21.

# 1 Mayfield takes on Paducah Tilghman. After the Season opener many left Tilghman for dead after McCracken County dominated them, Tilghman bounced back nicely against a Top 10 6A Central Hardin on Friday.

#4 Danville renews the rivalry with #5 3A Boyle County. The Rebs have owned this rivalry for the past decade plus but if there was ever a year for Danville to get the "W" it would be this year.

Flying Under the Radar

A couple teams have jumped out to 2-0 starts that usually have been after thoughts.

McLean County has defeated a 4A and a 6A foe in successive weeks. They will look to go 3-0 against 1A Crittenden County.

Metcalfe County is also out to a 2-0 start with wins over 5A Barren County and 3A Hart County. The Hornets though have a very stiff test with a highly ranked 4A Franklin-Simpson up next.
