3rd Region Rankings and Notebook (2/15/16)

Recommended Posts

As we head into the last week of the regular season, things are still as muddy as they were way back at the start of the season. If the regular season results are any indication, the post season is going to be a wild one...

1.Daviess County(20-6 SAME) - On Friday, the Panthers were upset by red hot Muhlenberg County. The Stangs were able to limit Stewart Currie in the 2nd half and knocked down 13 3 pointers in the winning effort. DC bounced back with a win over Hancock County on Saturday. With the win, DC is the first team in the region to reach the 20 win mark. While the Panthers remain the team to beat in the region, the loss to Muhlenberg proved just how tight things really are. DC finishes the season with Grayson County and South Warren.

2.Catholic(16-8 SAME) - The Aces were blown out at home on Wednesday night by Warren Central but bounced back by blowing out Union County on Saturday. Even with the loss to WC, the Aces have some nice signature wins over the past few weeks. They finish the season with a pair of road games vs 10th district foes in Ohio and Muhlenberg.

3.Meade County(18-8 SAME) - The Waves slide continued this week, with another loss to John Hardin. After a their red hot 10-0 start, the Waves are have only gone .500 since. To their credit, they have played one of the tougher schedules in the region and are 8-1 vs 3rd region opponents. They will look to get rolling this week against against Oldham County and Central Hardin.

4.Breck County(17-7 SAME) - Breck was one of the only teams in the region to have a clean week. They scored wins over Trinity and a convincing 20 point win over Mclean County. Cody Mingus is one of the best scorers in the region(17ppg), while Tyler Haycraft is putting up a double double every night(11/11). They finish out the season with games vs Central Hardin and Bullitt Central.

5.Muhlenberg County(12-13 UP 3) - There isnt a hotter team in the region than the Mustangs. They have reeled off 6 straight wins and just knocked off the #1 team in Daviess County. Coach Stovall has done a terrific job with this group. While they lack size, they can shoot it with the best of them. Kobe Drake has been complimenting their offense with great effort on the defensive end. Muhlenberg looks to stay hot against some tough competition in Christian County and Owensboro Catholic.

6.Owensboro(9-12 DOWN 1) - The Devils went 1-2 this week with a win over Whitesville Trinity. They lost a pair of games to Bowling Green and Louisville Trinity. The eyeball test tells you this team deserves to be ranked this high, but wins have been hard to come by for OHS. They are only 2-6 in their last 8 games. They continue their tough schedule to close the season vs Hoptown on Tuesday and at Henderson on Friday.

7.Ohio County(12-13 UP 2) - The Hartford Eagles had a pair of eye opening games this week. First, a 19 thumping of Edmonson County, followed by a blowout loss vs a middle of the road South Warren team. Its obvious this team is still growing, but the potential is there. Ohio has already punched their ticket to regional with a bye in the 10th district tournament. They will gear up for the postseason with two tough tests this week vs Catholic & Madisonville.

8.Hancock County(13-11 DOWN 1) - Hancock continues to play middle of the road basketball, but are capible of beating anyone in the region on a given night. The Hornets fell to #1 DC on Saturday. They have 3 games this week against Whitesville Trinity, Grayson County and Dawson Springs.

9.Edmonson County(15-9 DOWN 3) - The Wildcats were blown out at Ohio County on Thursday before bouncing back with a win over Cloverport on Friday. They have won 3 of 4. Edmonson closes the season against district foe Whitesville Trinity on Tuesday and Greenwood on Friday.

10.Apollo(7-15 UP 1) - While Apollo only has 1 win in its last 8 games, the Eagles hold wins over nearly every team ranked below them in this poll. They had a nice showing vs Lincoln County on Saturday, losing by 3. The word on the street is that Ben Moss is back in the lineup for Apollo. He has two more games to get acclimated to the system before a big district matchup with DC. The Eagles will finish the season with a pair of road games, at Madisonville and Mclean.

11.Mclean County(8-14 DOWN 1) - The Cougars lost by 20 on the road in Breck County on Saturday. After winning the 3rd region All-A tournament, the Cougars have dropped 3 of their last 4 games. They will end the regular season with home games against Butler County and Apollo.

12.Grayson County(10-14 SAME) - Grayson may have gone 0-2 this week but they were highly competitive against pretty tough competition, losing to John Hardin and Evansville North by a combined margin of 6 points. Since losing 8 straight in January, Grayson has been playing much better the past few weeks. They have games at Daviess County and vs Hancock County this week.

13.Trinity(13-13 SAME) - The Raiders ended their 4 game losing streak with a win over Christian Fellowship on Saturday. Prior to the win, they had lost 4 straight region games(Ohio,Grayson,OHS & Breck). Trinity will finish the season with 3 games against Cloverport, Edmonson and Hancock County.

14.Butler County(10-13 SAME) - The Bears have really struggled in the second half of the season but nearly got an upset win over Muhlenberg County on Thursday, losing 81-77. Butler closes the season against Mclean, Cloverport and Russelville before getting a district tournament game against Edmsonson.

15.Cloverport(4-19 SAME) - Cloverport got their 4th win of the season against Portland Christian. The Aces have a game almost every day this week, with games against Trinity, Butler, Brown, Walden and St Francis.

Games to watch this week....

1.Catholic @ Muhlenberg -Thurs- Can the Stangs stay hot against one of the best teams in the 3rd??

2.Hoptown @ OHS -Tue- This will be a good gauge of how far the Devils have come this season. Remember, Catholic beat Hoptown by 25 a few weeks ago.

3.Muhlenberg @ Christian County -Tue- the hottest team in the 3rd region goes head to head with the #1 Colonels.

4.Catholic @ Ohio County -Tue- Ohio County continues to improve. This should be a battle of some great coaching with Tim Riley vs Steve Sparks.

5.Apollo @ McLean County -Fri- Coach Barker returns to Mclean County. Will the Eagles have the services of PG Ben Moss?? This is the final final tune ups before district tournament.
