article 10th Region Rankings & Weekly Review (2-14-16)

Poor weather early in the week had a negative impact on this week's schedule, but there was plenty of excitement that has led to a serious shakeup in the newest rankings.

 

#1 - Paris (20-4)

 

A pair of road victories push the Greyhounds to the top spot this week. Terence Brooks' club outscored George Rogers Clark 23-15 in the 4th quarter on Thursday night to leave Winchester with a 66-60 triumph. Koebe Garrard led all scorers with 26 points and sophomore guard Marcus Ashford contributed 14. Two nights later the Hounds earned win #20 by turning back Harrison County 51-42, with Jekobi Wells scoring a team-high 15 points and Tayjin Cunningham added 13.

 

#2 - Mason County (18-7)

 

Pig Williams poured in 36 points for the Royals in Wednesday night's 79-70 OT win over visiting Montgomery County. The senior guard hit 12-26 shots, as well as 5-9 3-pointers in the victory. Conner Sweeney and Darren Williams scored 15 and 13 points, respectively. On Friday, again at home, the Royals earned a sluggish 61-48 victory over Harrison County. Pig Williams again paced the team with 25 points, while Darren Williams had an impressive performance of 10 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 blocked shots. Sweeney added 11 points.

#3 - Campbell County (15-12)

 

It was upset city in Alexandria on Wednesday night, as visiting Pendleton County shocked the Camels 66-63. Cole Hegyi led in defeat with 16 points, Garren Bertsch added 15, and Matt Wilson was held to 11 points and 9 rebounds. Aric Russell's squad delivered the upset on Friday night, however, beating 9th Region power Cooper on the road by a score of 69-53. Wilson was more himself, scoring 22 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Hegyi and Bertsch combined for 30 points, with both scoring 15.

 

#4 - Montgomery County (17-10)

 

The Indians had defeated Mason County just before Christmas in The Fieldhouse, but the Royals got their revenge in Wednesday's 79-70 OT win. Art Walker drained 7-10 3-pointers en route to scoring a team-high 25 points. Caswell Fuller added 13, Jerryd Jones 12, and Cody Parsley 11 in the loss. Friday night saw a sizzling MoCo team pound visiting Pendleton County 81-50. Eleven Indians scored, led by Parsley's 16 points. Big man Shelby Combs helped with 13 points, while Jones again had 12 and Walker 11.

 

#5 - Augusta (18-6)

 

Brian Kirk's Panthers extended their winning streak to 5 games after a pair of weekend, home, 39th District wins. First up was Friday night's 77-44 whipping of St. Patrick, which saw Augusta outscore the visitors 43-20 in the 2nd half. Owens Crawford led the way with 20 points. Camryn Snapp chipped in with 15 and Connor Maddox 14. On Saturday night, the Panthers controlled Bracken County from start to finish in an 80-65 win. Maddox topped the team with 27 points, with Jared Shoemaker adding 23, and Crawford 16.

 

#6 - Scott (11-14)

 

The Eagles picked up a huge victory in Friday night's 61-60 OT thriller over visiting Bishop Brossart. Despite being plagued with foul trouble, junior Jake Ohmer scored 23 points and Vinnie Duimlao came up big with 17 points. The bigger story, though, is the win forcing a 3-way tie at the top of the 37th District, thereby forcing a Tuesday draw to see who gets the #1 seed in the upcoming District Tournament. Brad Carr's bunch was victorious again Saturday, this time on the road, beating Boone County 64-57. Ohmer netted 24 points to lead the way and Nelson Perrin tossed in 13.

#7 - Bishop Brossart (17-7)

 

In their only outing of the week, Bishop Brossart led host Scott most of the way in Friday night's huge 37th District showdown, but the Eagles triumphed in OT, winning 61-60. Jackson Crawford had a strong night of 29 points, and fellow senior forward Joey Hickman also impressed, totaling 16 points and 15 rebounds. The Mustangs have lost 4 of their last 5.

#8 - George Rogers Clark (14-13)

 

GRC went 1-2 last week, starting with a dominating 94-57 win over visiting East Jessamine on Tuesday. The Cards jumped out 22-3 after the 1st quarter and ended up putting 12 players in the scoring column. Jordan Menchen had 17 points, James Cornelius 15, Ryan Cooper 14, and Jyles Anderson 12. On Thursday at home, Clark led Paris by 3 after 3 quarters, but the Greyhounds won the 4th 23-15 to win 66-60. Cornelius had 17 points and 13 boards in the loss. Then on Saturday Scott Humphrey's team lost 59-55 to Collins at Nicholas County, despite leading by 6 at halftime. Anderson's 18 points led in defeat. Cornelius and Menchen both had 12 points.

#9 - Bracken County (14-10)

 

Four Polar Bears earned double figures in Thursday's 79-67 victory over visiting Williamstown. Austin Crawford led the way with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Senior center Jarred Lippert also had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Kolton Williams notched 16 points and Cooper Engnes had 15. Forty-eight hours later, Jason Hinson's club lost for the second time this year to home-standing Augusta, this time by a score of 80-65. Crawford's 29 points and 11 rebounds led in defeat.

#10 - Pendleton County (12-15)

 

The Wildcats shocked the 10th Region in Wednesday night's 66-63 road win at Campbell County, which saw freshman Dontaie Allen tally a game-high 27 points. Grant Walsh added 11 points and Mason Dennie 10 points. Friday night was a totally different story, as hot-shooting Montgomery County drilled Pendleton 81-50. Allen (23) and Dennie (17) combined for 80% of the team's points.

#11 - Harrison County (10-15)

 

The Thorobreds lost a pair of weekend games, beginning with Friday's 61-48 road defeat against Mason County. Zack Pulliam scored 14 points in the loss and Brock Jenkins had 11. On Saturday the Breds lost at home to Paris 51-42, with only Jovon Williams earning double figures with 10 points. Harrison has lost 5 straight and 7 of its last 8.

 

#12 - Bourbon County (6-20)

 

In a Tuesday night home game, the Colonels trailed Madison Southern by just 4 points at the half, but were outscored 24-15 in the 3rd quarter in a 67-54 loss. Ameryon Blackburn led the way in defeat with 22 points. Blackburn and Billy Orcutt both tallied 17 points, and Titus Ransom scored 16, in Thursday's 66-45 road win over Nicholas County.

#13 - St. Patrick (12-14)

 

Jakaar Frey earned 16 points and 7 rebounds, but the Saints fell hard at Augusta 77-44 on Friday night. St. Patrick reobunded on Saturday, though, in a 68-47 road win at Rose Hill.

 

#14 - Nicholas County (8-17)

 

In their only contest of the week, the Bluejackets lost 66-45 at home to Bourbon County on Thursday night. Elijah Barnett netted 13 points and Logan Stafford had 12 in the loss.

#15 - Calvary Christian (13-12)

 

The Cougars remained 1 game over .500 for the season after going 1-1 last week. On Thursday Calvary defeated Heritage Academy 58-38 on the road, but then lost on the road Friday night: 64-57 to Portland Christian.

 

#16 - Robertson County (7-16)

 

In their only game of the week, the Black Devils lost at home to Model 76-41. John Brown's squad has 4 games scheduled to close the regular season, with 3 of them taking place away from home.

 

#17 - Silver Grove (7-19)

 

Randy Kuntz scored 18 points and Logan Taylor tossed in 17 as the Big Trains upended Heritage Academy 67-52 at home on Tuesday night. Kuntz would score 17 on Friday, but Silver Grove lost big at Dayton 83-32. But Howard Brownstein's boys finished the week on a high note, beating Latin 63-52 Saturday on the road.

If they get to play the game on Tuesday they will have a chance to continue it @ Brossart, also host Pendleton on Friday.

Mason is playing very well right now with some nice wins, same can be said for Augusta, I think Paris has the most athleticism. Campbell has the best big man, that counts for a lot. This region is wide open for the taking. I can see any of the top five winning. Should be a very competitive tournament this year with so many of these teams peeking at the right time.

Might be a little biased, but how is Mason not #1? Beat Paris IN Paris. Beat MoCo. Just can't see how MaCo isn't #1.

With 5 straight wins and 7 of their last 8, Augusta is pretty hot as well. The spark has been their defense as in their last 7 wins they are giving up an average of 53 ppg to their opponents.

IMO Mason loses to Paris at home if Garrard plays. Not sure if Mason Co could do much damage to good teams without Pigg playing, but that's just my opinion. The difference with Paris and a lot of these other teams is they can still compete pretty well without the star of the team being present.

Good job RP. I'll give you an A for effort on this all year and no one could have done better. Districts and Region: Truly wide open without a doubt and hey if this gig doesn't work out there's always that weather guys job. Your record is probably better than their's and I'm sure it pays alot better......
