article 14th Region Rankings 2-7-16

1.Perry County Central (18-3):

The Commodores are rolling right now and at the right time as post season is just right around the corner. Their latest victims were Knott Central (73-57), Hazard (84-78 OT), Casey County (83-71). The Commodores were expected to travel to Casey County within the next week but that game has been canceled. Senior guards, Travis Dunn and James Blair led the way for the Commodores during that 3 game stretch, Blair averaging 22 PPG and 6 boards per game. Dunn averaged 23 PPG and 1 board a game.

 

Perry Central will return to action Tuesday traveling to Belfry, Saturday vs. Southwestern (@ Pulaski County) and on Sunday traveling to Letcher Central.

 

 

2.Cordia (14-6):

The Lions have yet to play in a game coming off the heels of their All “A” Classic State Championship. Cordia will return to action Tuesday traveling to Richmond to battle the Madison Central Indians. @ Buckhorn on Thursday and vs. Mercer County (@ Pulaski county) on Saturday.

 

 

3.Hazard (15-4):

The Bulldogs were on high rolling into last week, but it wouldn’t be an easy week as they faced off against 2 top 5 region teams. Hazard would get off to a good start defeating #4 Letcher Central 78-73 in a thriller. That wouldn’t be the talk of the town though, Hazard would travel across town to Perry County Central on Friday looking to knock off the Commodores. This game was one of the best games across the state on this night. A See-saw battle that went back and forth before Perry Central would pull out a 84-78 victory in OT.

 

Hazard travels to South Floyd (Mon.), Wolfe County (Tues.), host Jackson City (Fri) and travel to Leslie County (Sat.)

 

 

4.Letcher County Central (15-8):

The Cougars have hit a rough spot lately and have been in a bind since Dec. 28^th. The Cougars are just 3-4 in their last 7 games that includes a 3 game losing streak. 7-7 are the Cougars since Dec. 28^th, before that Letcher Central had started the season off 8-1. Junior forward Torrell Carter continues to led the way for Letcher Central and Coach Hammonds, averaging right at 28 PPG and 8 boards a game.

 

The Cougars travel to Allen Central on Tuesday, hosts Breathitt County (Thurs) and Perry Central (Sun).

 

 

 

5.June Buchanan (17-6):

June Buchanan has won 3 straight games on their way to a 13-3 record since December 20^th, in fact, the Crusaders have only lost 3 games since the New Year. Some of the wins have came against stiff competition, Letcher Central, Buckhorn, Breathitt, they’ve also lost to Letcher Central and Cordia.

 

June Buchanan only has 3 games (excluding postseason) left. Wednesday @ South Floyd, Saturday vs. Johnson Central and Feb. 16 @ Harlan County.

 

 

6.Buckhorn (11-13):

The Wildcats have won 3 straight and 4 out of their last 6 games. Buckhorn had been struggling all season until lately. The Horn will look to continue their winning ways this week as they travel to Knott Central on Tuesday then return home to host Cordia (Thurs) and Piarist School (Fri)

 

 

7.Breathitt County (15-10):

The Bobcats are struggling as of late, going 1-3 since February 2^nd. The lone win came over Estill County 73-56. Justin Baker led the way for the Bobcats with 28. Tyler Pelfrey added 18 and Jordan Barnett had 14 to help led the Bobcats to a 73-56 over the Engineers. Estill County led 29-27 at halftime then was outscored by 19 points in the second half (46-27).

 

The Bobcats will be away from home this week, traveling to Letcher Central on Thursday and Knott Central on Saturday.

 

 

8.Jackson City (11-14):

The Tigers are on fire and at the right time. Jackson City has won 7 straight and 8 of their last 10 games. Some of the wins have came against top notch teams; Buckhorn, Breathitt County, Jackson County, Wolfe County.

 

Jackson City has just 3 remaining games. Feb. 9 vs. Estill County, Feb. 12 @ Hazard, Feb. 16 vs. Lee County.

 

 

9.Leslie County (11-9):

Several teams in the 14^th Region are playing good ball and at the right time with Leslie County being one of those teams that’s’ playing good basketball. The Eagles have won 4 straight and 7 of their last 10 ball games.

 

Leslie County won’t have an easy week as they host Barbourville (Tues), travel to Bell County (Fri) and host Hazard (Sat.)

 

 

 

10.Knott County Central (9-12):

The Patriots finally put a stop to their long losing streak last week defeating both Jenkins (96-22) and Powell County (60-52). Those wins ended a 7 game losing streak for the Pats. Knott Central will have just 3 games remaining on their schedule; Feb. 9 Buckhorn, Feb. 13 Breathitt County and Feb. 19 Rowan County.

 

 

11.Powell County (11-12):

The Pirates have been playing good basketball lately, winning 4 out of their last 6 games with wins including; Estill County (43-36), Breathitt County (52-40), Sheldon Clark (55-52) and Lee County (77-53). The Pirates would fall on Saturday though, 60-52 to Knott Central.

 

Powell County will be on the road this week, traveling to Owsley County on Tuesday and Jackson County on Friday.

 

 

12.Wolfe County (17-8):

The Wolves have gotten back on track after a rough and rocky late December. The Wolves are currently 9-3 since January 1^st.

 

The Wolves will have a big week ahead of them as they prepare to face Hazard (Feb. 9), Sayre (Feb. 11) and Jackson County (Feb. 13) all are at home.

 

 

13.Estill County (7-17):

The Engineers have countered their 4 game win streak into a 4 game losing streak. 3 of those 4 losses were blowout losses by 15+ points. Engineers travel to Jackson City on Tuesday and hosts Berea on Friday.

 

 

14.Lee County (6-15):

The Bobcats have won 5 more games than they did last season. The Bobcats need just 2 more wins to match their total wins for 2013/14.

 

 

15.Owsley County (6-17):

The Owls have won just 1 game out of their last 6 games.

 

 

16.Jenkins (1-22):

The Cavaliers losing skid continues. Losing streak has reached 14 games. Their closest game during that span was a 22 point loss to Owsley County 79-57.

 

 

17.Riverside Christian (1-23):

Riverside Christian has the chance to win 2 ball games this season. They will meet Piarist School, the team they defeated 55-41 to pick up their first win on the season, on Saturday.
