11th Region Notebook for the week of December 14th

Recommended Posts

Apologies for the tardiness. Work has gotten in the way of my basketball addiction. Adulthood is the worst.

Team of the Week: Scott County – The young Cardinals won 3 games in 3 days by knocking off LCA by 20, Corbin by 9 and Lex Cath by 11. Billy Hicks has his team playing well already and sit at 7-1 heading into the Christmas break.

Player of the Week: Michael Moreno, Scott County – The big reason they went 3-0 last week. Michael went for 28 points and 13 rebounds against LCA, 19 and 8 against Corbin and 18 and 15 against Lexington Catholic. He also celebrated his 15th birthday on Monday. Looking forward to following this young man's career for the next 4 seasons.

Team Rankings (Last week’s ranking in parentheses)

1. Dunbar (1) – A 16 point win over Lafayette, a 1 point road victory over Lexington Catholic and a 15 point win at LCA keep the Bulldogs at #1 for a second straight week. Taveion Hollingsworth, Darius Williams and Jordan Lewis are all averaging double figures after 6 games.

2. Henry Clay (2) – The Blue Devils had quality wins over Bryan Station and Louisville Eastern last week before a 3 point loss to Owen County. Barring a Dunbar loss or two, they’re likely plugged into our #2 spot for the next few weeks.

3. Scott County (7) – Our team of the week sits at 7-1 heading into the Christmas tournament season. Bryce Long, Cooper Watts, Cooper Robb and Michael Moreno all average double figures for our biggest riser of the week.

4. Lafayette (3) – Losing to Dunbar by 16 is their lone blemish on the young season but they lack an impressive win for the year. And before you say Wayne County is an impressive win, Wayne was without their best player. Ross Jenkins leads the Generals with averages of 16.7 points and 8 boards.

5. Bryan Station (5) – A 15 point loss started last week before they beat Tates Creek by 7 without Dishman (out until January) and Andre Davis (football all star game). If they ever get it together, they can challenge for a region title but right now they are struggling, as evidenced by dropping out of the King of the Bluegrass showcase game this weekend.

6. Lexington Catholic (6) – Losers of 3 straight and sitting at 2-3 overall, the Knights have lost to all 3 quality teams they have faced. Having said that, they should have beaten Dunbar and the Scott County loss was a classic “big game hangover” from the night before against Dunbar.

7. Lexington Christian (4) – Another team who has a handful of wins but none over a good team. You’re probably saying “Campbell County is good”. I would argue that the Camels aren’t very good. They’re sitting at 3-4 with no quality wins. The Eagles also got dominated for 32 minutes by Scott County. Therefore, they drop in the rankings.

8. Madison Central (9) – Winners of 3 in a row, the Indians suddenly sit at 5-3 and in the drivers seat in the 44th district for the 21st year in a row.

9. Frankfort (8) – Beat Western Hills by 17 before getting rolled by Montgomery County and dropping a district game to Franklin county on a buzzer beater. Anthony Robinson is currently averaging 19 points and 14.5 rebounds for the Panthers. Definitely worthy of All-Region consideration at this point.

10. Woodford County (NR) – The Yellow Jackets have won 3 out of 4 including 2 district wins. They are off until they host the Woodford County Invitational starting next Monday.
