16th Region Weekly

With the EKC tournament wrapping up and the Boyd County Roundball Classic taking place this past week as expected there has been a bit of a shakeup in the rankings!

Weekly Rankings

1. Elliott County- The Lions picked up wins over Menifee County and Fairview by large margins this past week. The Lions also picked up an 80-78 point victory over Boyd County at the Boyd County Roundball Classic. They were led by freshman Korbin Spencer who put in 34 points. Chase Porter also had 24 against Boyd, the freshman-junior duo lead Elliott to the top of the rankings this week.

2. West Carter- The Comets rise to the second spot in the rankings this week after beating Rowan County and East Carter to capture the EKC tournament title for the first time in 20 years, and then beating Morgan County in a district seeding game. The Comets were paced this week by front court players Hayden Roe and Ben Jordan, both of whom are averaging a double-double five games in. Hayden Roe had 31 against Morgan County.

3. Greenup County- Wins over Notre Dame (OH) and Lewis County with a loss to Jackson County help the Musketeers maintain their ranking from last week. Gage Hughes had 34 against Lewis County. Greenup continues to spread the ball around but Hughes and Hubbert lead the way.

4. Boyd County- The Lions may have hit .333 this week and struck out in their own Roundball Classic, but they struck out swinging. Boyd lost 74-83 and 78-80 to the number one teams in the 15th and 16th regions, Lawrence County and Elliott County. Boyd played Elliott Friday night and Bobby Anderson came alive in the second half and scored 20 of his 29 and continued the attack the next night when he scored 34 in a losing effort. The Lions looked very impressive this week and will continue to improve if Bobby keeps up this aggressiveness.

5. Morgan County- The Cougars went down to the wire with both the Carter County teams, and came out without a victory. In the overtime loss to the Raiders Najeh Banks had 26 and Jordan Perry had 28, combining for 54 of the 67 team points. Perry had 28 in the 71-77 loss to the Comets.

6. East Carter- The Raiders handed Morgan County their first loss of the season in OT led by Brady Bush, who had to take the bulk of the scoring over after Cameron Sparks was knocked out. Bush hit the game winner with just seconds left to lift the Raiders over the Cougars. The Raiders then came up short against the Comets in the EKC championship game and again hit a final second shot in overtime against Pikeville at the Boyd County Roundball Classic (this time it was Cameron Bailey). The Raiders would be ranked higher on the list but star guard Cameron Sparks has a torn Achilles and is out for the season.

7. Ashland- The Tomcats split this week against out of state teams. Beating Ironton 57-55 on a last second shot, and getting beat 46-63 by Ripley (WV). Ripley has a 16th region connection though, through head coach Evan Faulkner the former Elliott County standout. The Villers brothers continue to score well for the Tomcats this week.

8. Rowan County- The Vikings are at 8th on potential alone. With only one win against Bath County, all the Vikings have to show so far is how good we know they can be. This week the Vikings were outplayed by West Carter and Newport.

9. Lewis County- The Lions of Lewis picked up a big win over Fleming County and played Greenup to an 8 point game. The Lions looked better this week and will need to continue the improvement if they want to contend with Greenup for the district championship

10. Fairview- After a disappointing first week the Eagles reached .500 with wins over Rose Hill and a close on over Russell. The Eagles are 3-3 and are a threat to Ashland and Boyd in the 64th

11. Raceland- The Rams went undefeated this week. Raceland beat up on Ohio this week, beating Dawson Bryant, St. Joseph Central, and Portsmouth West. The Rams sit at 4-1 and are feeling confident about their chances.

12. Russell- The Red Devils picked up a win over Bath County before losing a close one to Fairview this week.

13. Fleming- Fleming struck out this week and remain winless. Look for that to change this week with a game against Menifee.

14. Bath- Bath beat Menifee this week but otherwise didn’t look impressive.

15. Rose Hill- Rose Hill picked up win number two this week over Piarist School! Congratulations Rose Hill!

16. Menifee County- Menifee remains winless so far, and take on Fleming this week who is also winless.

Player of the week:

Korbin Spencer (Elliott County)- Spencer led the Lions to a victory over Boydwith 34 points on 14-25 shooting. He also tallied 4 assists. The freshman hardly plays like his classification.

Games to watch

The Raceland Derby Classic and Kentucky Bank Challenge (at Rowan County) all take place this week. Go out and see your 16th region teams compete against members from the other region.

Greenup County vs Ashland (@Greenup) the 15th 7:30- good measuring stick game for both teams.

Ashland is looking to get the spark back tonight at the Green House. Like RaiderPride5 said, it will be a good measuring stick for both teams. Stopping Hughes is going to be a priority. Ironton is down this year, 3 freshman on the floor multiple times, however, coming away with the win. Ripley (WVa) was a very talented team. 6'8 and 6'9 are tough to guard at any time. Those two boys played well above the rim. Lets get it done tonight on the Musketeer's home court.
