article 10th Region Rankings & Weekly Review (12-14-15)

Two weeks of basketball are behind us and parity is the word being thrown around most often in the 10th Region. That parity is reflected in these rankings, which have undergone significant changes, with very little separation between several schools.

#1 - Paris (3-1)

The Greyhounds began Week 2 with a thrilling 58-56 home win over 40th District favorite Montgomery County on Tuesday night. Junior guard Ryan Davis had but one field goal in the entire contest and it came as the buzzer sounded, breaking a 56-56 tie. All Region forward Koebe Garrard paced Paris with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Then on Friday night, with some observers being concerned about a letdown, the Hounds came through again with an impressive road win, 93-68, against another 40th District opponent: Bourbon County. Garrard's 23 points topped Paris, while Jekobi Wells scored 21.

#2 - Campbell County (3-2)

Aric Russell's club gave up the top spot in the rankings after a 1-2 Week 2. Campbell started the week surrendering 14 3-pointers in a road Wednesday night loss to Covington Holy Cross 69-42. Senior center Matt Wilson's 11 points and 12 rebounds led the Camels in defeat. Two nights later, Wilson scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in Campbell's first home game of the season--a 77-59 win over St. Henry. Junior wing Garren Bertsch also scored 20, draining 5 treys in the contest. The Camels ended the week on a sour note, however, falling at Lexington Christian 63-51 on Saturday night. Campbell took a 4 point lead to the locker room, only to be outscored 40-24 in the 2nd half. Cole Hegyi and Trent McGovney both scored 14 points, while Wilson earned 12 points and 9 boards.

#3 - Montgomery County (4-2)

The Indians also dropped a spot this week after a 1-2 Week 2. In the aforementioned 58-56 loss at Paris, MoCo trailed 33-26 at the half, then battled back to trail 42-41 after 3 quarters before losing at the horn. Cody Parsley's 14 points led the Indians, who hit just 2-18 3-point field goals. On Friday night, Matt Daniel's squad led Madison Central on the road for most of the game, but missed free throws down the stretch doomed the Indians, ultimately losing 63-62. Parsley scored 15 and Jerryd Jones added 13. Montgomery did notch a win in Saturday's Bart Rison Classic, turning back Frankfort 75-55. Five Indians were in double figures: Art Walker had 17, freshman Brennan Canada 13, Jones 12, Parsley 11, and point guard Caswell Fuller chipped in with 10.

#4 - Mason County (4-1)

Pig Williams scored 27 points and Conner Sweeney contributed 18 in the Royals' Tuesday night 73-62 victory over visiting Bourbon County. Buddy Biggs' boys followed that game up with a 93-87 triumph over then-undefeated Scott in Maysville on Friday night. In a game that was a glorified free throw shooting contest (92 attempts combined), the Royals prevailed, led by Williams' 24 points. Sweeney netted 20, as did sophomore guard Isiah Garrison. In Saturday's Bart Rison Classic, Mason County outlasted Woodford County 66-60. Garrison was the high-scorer, tallying 26 points, while Williams added 21 points and 7 rebounds.

#5 - Augusta (4-1)

The Montgomery/Paris game was not the only Tuesday night 10th Region thriller. Augusta visited county rival Bracken County that night as well, coming away with a highly entertaining 98-94 double OT victory. Trailing by 3 points in the first OT, senior guard Connor Maddox drained a very contested 3-pointer, sending the game into a second extra frame tied at 83. The Panthers took control in the game's final minute to seal the win. Maddox's 30 points topped Augusta, while fellow senior Camryn Snapp added 27 points and 10 rebounds. Junior guard Jared Shoemaker earned an impressive 21 points. Augusta's only other game last week was a Friday night 80-66 win at Lloyd. Shoemaker and Maddox both scored 18 and Owens Crawford netted 17 for Brian Kirk's club.

#6 - Scott (3-1)

The Eagles had a 1-1 finish in Week 2, beginning with an 81-70 win over Harrison County in their home opener. Junior guard Jake Ohmer finished with 30 points and fellow junior Vinnie Duimlao contributed 17. Ohmer's younger brother, freshman Chad Ohmer, not only scored his first varsity points, but ended up totaling 15 for the game. In the Friday night free throw-athon in Maysville, the Eagles came up on the short end of the stick, dropping one 93-87 to Mason County. The elder Ohmer again led the way, scoring 35 points on 18-19 free throw shooting.

#7 - George Rogers Clark (2-2)

Madison Central took care of two 40th District teams last week. The Indians beat Montgomery County, as mentioned earlier, but defeated GRC earlier in the week 70-59. In the loss, Jordan Menchen led the Cardinals with 20 and big man James Cornelius chipped in with 15. Friday saw Scott Humphrey's team take to the road again, only this time coming away victorious in a 71-63 handling of Pendleton County. Cornelius and Jyles Anderson topped the Cards with 17 and Menchen had another nice effort with 14 points on 4-10 3-point shooting.

#8 - Bishop Brossart (3-1)

The Mustangs battled two more 9th Region opponents in Week 2, finishing .500. First up was a 60-51 defeat at Holmes. Brossart jumped out to an early 11-0 lead, but the home-standing Bulldogs proved too strong the rest of the way. Jacob Zai led the Stangs with 12, while Jackson Crawford had 11 points and 9 rebounds. Joey Hickman also scored 11. Mike Code's squad again sped out to a large lead over visiting Beechwood on Thursday night, eventually winning 55-36. Hickman led the way with 19 points and Zai added 12, all of which came on 4 1st half 3-pointers. Brossart's first 10th Region game will come Friday night at Bracken County.

#9 - Pendleton County (2-4)

After losing all 3 games in Week 1, Keaton Belcher's Wildcats earned a pair of wins last week. Pendleton upended 38th District foe Nicholas County 78-56 in Falmouth on Tuesday night, led by Dontaie Allen's 24 points and 7 rebounds. Senior Tanner Daugherty scored 15 and sophomore Grant Walsh 14 in the win. The Wildcats' second win last week came in convincing fashion, a 72-27 whipping of Riverside Christian in Model's Coaches vs. Cancer Classic Saturday afternoon. Allen again paced PC with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Sandwiched between the wins, however, was a 71-63 home loss to George Rogers Clark at home on Friday. Allen had another double-double of 27 points and 11 rebounds. Senior point guard Hunter Wood also had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.

#10 - Bracken County (3-2)

The Polar Bears first of three Week 2 games was the 98-94 double OT loss at home to Augusta on Tuesday. Junior guard Austin Crawford was sensational, breaking Bracken's single-game scoring record with 47 points. Crawford also grabbed 13 rebounds and dished out 6 assists. Brady Jones added 15, Jacob Hamilton 14, and John Bravard 12. Jason Hinson's Bears bounced back strong, with a pair of weekend wins, starting with an 84-43 defeat of visiting Robertson County. Crawford scored 19 and Hamilton 16 in the victory. Then on Saturday, the Polar Bears defeated 16th Region opponent Fleming County 78-67 in the Robertson County Adidas Classic. Crawford earned another double-double of 25 points and 11 rebounds. Jones also notched a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Hamilton netted 21 points, connecting on 11-11 free throws.

#11 - Harrison County (3-2)

Brock Jenkins scored 19 points, Spencer Free 15 points, and Jovon Williams 14, but the Thorobreds fell at Scott on Tuesday 81-70. The Breds cruised to a road win on Friday, however, defeating 38th District foe Nicholas County 77-47. Leon Commodore and Zack Pulliam both scored 19 points in the victory, and Williams had another 14 point performance.

#12 - Bourbon County (1-5)

The Colonels were on the short end of 3 games in Week 2, starting with Tuesday night's 73-62 defeat at Mason County. Senior big man Billy Orcutt topped Bourbon with 23 points. Chandler Thomas had 16 points and 12 rebounds and Ameryon Blackburn pitched in with 14. Blackburn scored 19, Orcutt 14, and Austin Rankin 14 in Friday's 93-68 loss to visiting Paris. Then the Colonels rounded out the week with a hard-fought 54-48 home loss to Lincoln County.

#13 - St. Patrick (2-3)

Matthew Taylor's Saints participated in just 1 contest during Week 2, falling 59-42 at Williamstown on Friday night. Senior forward Jakaar Frey was a bright spot for the Saints in defeat, scoring 22 points and pulling down 12 rebounds.

#14 - Nicholas County (0-5)

The Jackets suffered defeat in both Week 2 outings. In the 78-56 Tuesday night road loss to Pendleton County, Spencer Morris led Nicholas with 13 points and 10 rebounds, with Wes Sapp contributing 12. Matthew Botner's team then played its first home game of the year, but fell 77-47 on Friday to 38th District opponent Harrison County.

#15 - Calvary Christian (5-1)

How many people would have guessed the 10th Region leader in wins after 2 weeks of play would be....Calvary Christian? It's true, as first-year coach Ryan Neisis' club stands at 5-1, with 3 of those wins coming in Week 2. On Tuesday night, Calvary overcame an 11-point halftime deficit to defeat Villa Madonna 34-31 at home, led by Aikeem Riley's 21 points. Riley followed that up by pouring in a career-high 41 points as the Cougars upended Brown 69-48. On Saturday, Justin Wade scored 21 points, with Riley adding 11 points and 9 rebounds in Calvary's 54-24 win over Christian Fellowship.

#16 - Robertson County (1-4)

The Black Devils got into the win column on Tuesday night, scoring a 46-34 win at Silver Grove. Dakota Moore scored 14 points and Mason Burden finished with 12 points and 9 rebounds in the victory. The weekend, however, saw John Brown's team drop two games: 84-43 at Bracken County on Friday and 63-57 at home to Burgin on Saturday.

#17 - Silver Grove (0-6)

It was 3 more games and 3 more losses for the Big Trains in Week 2. Randy Kuntz scored 10 points in the Grove's 46-34 home loss to Robertson County on Tuesday. Two nights later, Kuntz had 10 points and 10 rebounds in a 68-37 home loss to Bellevue. Then on Friday, Silver Grove lost by 40 (76-36) at home to Dohn Community (OH). Nathan Cox had 9 points and 13 rebounds and Kuntz had 9 points and 11 rebounds.

I certainly appreciate your work on this weekly thread, and find no arguments to be had this early in the season. Just some casual comments....1). Campbell Co. at #2 probably speaks more to their potential than how they have played to date. If they don't pick up their game, this week will bring two more losses against CovCath and Montgomery with a win over Dixie sandwiched in between. 2). Brossart at #8 has had a very weak four game schedule to date with only the loss to Holmes being against a quality opponent. Will have a full open week to prepare for Bracken on Friday. Another 10th Region clash to begin to sort things out, or maybe a bit early to draw any conclusions. 3). Looks like Bracken at #10 is much lower than the eye test tells us. However your approach of making them prove themselves with W's is appreciated. This week with Mason and Brossart both in the Igloo sets them up to ride some thermals up the rankings with W's.

It's understandable to have Campbell number two after the way they've started, but it would be surprising if they're not eventually number one. CovCath is a tough game for anyone and could go either way but a solid win against Montgomery County should give them a boost. They need to run more offense thru Hegyi, he is a player.

I believe your rankings are on point...you mentioned the moco game...Ryan Davis of Paris scored the winning bucket w/o taking a shot the entire game...he had confidence in his ability...all distict and all region honorable mention player Jr Jekobi Wells didn't even score and Paris beat Moco...this team is deep and talented....from what I've seen and read Paris from top to bottom is the best team in the region...if you're role players don't come to play it will b a long nite...there two can match w any other teams top two.

Another great job RP. It has to be a daunting task to rank the 10th this season with so much parity. No team are head and shoulders adove the rest of the pack. Any of the top 10-11 could beat any of the teams in the top 10-11 on any given night. As a whole i feel the 10th is down this year, but that will just create so many exciting games for the high school fan to take in this season especially come late Feb. early March

It's about time people are taking a real look at the greyhounds again. That Paris team is going to be hard to beat, they are too deep!!! I see them making a deep run.
