article Bluegrasspreps' Class 6A Football Playoff Preview

The 2015 Class 6A regular season has ended. Speculation can begin on who is good enough to make it to the Championship Game. Will there be a surprise this season or will it be status quo?

Region 1

The Western Kentucky Region looks to be a two horse race this year. Traditional powers Meade County and Henderson have struggled this season.

McCracken County (8-2) looks to be the heavy favorite to reach the regional final game. They have been the most consistent team in the region. Though last week they lost to a very good Bowling Green team, I don’t think it affects the thinking that they will make it to the regional final. They have some very talented skill players beginning with University of Kentucky commit Zy’aire Hughes. Hughes has over a thousand all-purpose yards this season.

On the other end of the bracket in Region 1 sits Central Hardin (7-3) who is currently on a four game winning streak. They are getting things done on the ground this season with a pair of running backs. Xavier Arnette and Darius Barbour have combined for over 1500 yards on the ground.

Both teams seem pretty much even on the defensive side of the ball. They are both giving up 19 points per game. I think McCracken may have a slight advantage because of playing at home.

Region 1 Championship: McCracken County 32 Central Hardin 24

Region 2

The Jefferson County region better known as the Heavy Weight Region in Class 6A. This region is loaded with teams that could be in the finals if they did have to play in this region.

Male (10-0) is coming into the playoffs undefeated on the year. They have done it on both sides of the football and seem to be the most complete team in 6A. Offensively the Bulldogs are averaging 48 points per game. Leading the Bulldogs on offense is their quarterback, Hayden Shelton, who has completed 60% of his passes this season. On defense, Male has only given up an amazing 5.7 points per game. Numbers like those make Male the favorite to play in the regional final.

The bottom half of the bracket, also known as the Catholic Invitational, looks to put a rematch between St. Xavier (6-4) and Trinity (9-1) in round 2 of the playoffs. St. Xavier lost to both Male and Trinity this season by a combined total of 8 points. Trinity had last week off which has given them an extra week to possibly tweak some things for the playoffs. Although, with the defense only giving up 9 points per game, there may not be much to tweak.

Region 2 Championship: Male 24 Trinity 21

Region 3

The Northern Kentucky Region has gained a lot of respect this season with the improvement of teams like Ryle and Conner.

Copper (8-2) enters the playoffs on a 5 game winning streak. They have been led this season by their quarterback Nathan Brown. Nathan has thrown for over 1600 yards this season and 15 touchdown passes, completing 50% of his passes this season. The offense is averaging 26 points a game, while the defense has only allowed 13 points per game. Cooper hoping to make it to the regional final, but first will have to tackle a second round rematch with Conner. When the two teams met in the regular season Cooper escaped with a 2 point victory.

Simon Kenton (10-0) comes into the playoffs as a heavy favorite to win region three. Simon Kenton has been explosive on offense this season, scoring 43 points per game. Most of those points came from their explosive ground attack of Dillion Powell. Dillion is averaging a 142 yards per game with 21 touchdowns. Defensively, Simon Kenton is giving up 12 points per game. The Pioneers have been the most dominant team in Northern Kentucky this season and have the ability to make the trip to Bowling Green.

Region 3 Championship: Simon Kenton 35 Cooper 13

Region 4

The Central Kentucky Area region has been the most unpredictable this season. Mostly because the teams from Lexington have been hard to tell who will show up from week to week.

Scott County (9-1) has been the traditional Cardinal team, beating teams with a physical rushing attack. This season the Cardinals have done it with a pair of quality runners. Keith Guy and Noah Hughes have combined for over 2000 yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground this season. Scott County is scoring 46 points per game while giving up 26 points per game. The Cardinals seem to be headed back to the regional championship game. They will have to take care of a very talented Bryan Station team that has the skill to compete. But the Defenders have been one of the teams tough to judge from week to week.

Lafayette (8-2) entered the season as one of the most hyped teams in class 6A. They are loaded with several players that will play at the division one level. They are averaging 39 points per game behind a very impressive ground attack. As a team, the Generals have rushed for 2940 yards on the season. They have two running backs that have combined for over 2100 yards. Mason Alstatt and Walker Wood have punished teams this season running the football as they also have combined for 26 touchdowns on the ground. Lurking in the woods is a Henry Clay team that has struggled this season but is on a 3 game winning streak going into the playoffs. These two teams met during the regular season with Lafayette winning 48-34. I think this second round game has the makings of an upset. Coach Simpson knows how to win in November.
