article Class 5A Notebook (10/5) - The Status Quo

Not many surprises in Class 5A this week. There was only one loss by the Top 10 teams, #6 Christian County fell to #3 Owensboro, not exactly unexpected. #1 Bowling Green cruised as expected, as did the other Top 10 teams. This past week, actually only saw one loss by the top 15 teams in Class 5A, the aforementioned Christian County loss.

Bowling Green, coming off a lopsided win, will have the week off preparing for another run to the Championship Game. But, in the way of that goal, is two quality teams: Greenwood and McCracken County. Will the Purples run the table on the regular season? Are they ready for a playoff run? Can anyone stop them on their way to the Championship Game?

Pulaski County was also on the winning side of a running clock last week. The Maroons are looking to make a point after being behind Bowling Green in the rankings. Pulaski County will be mostly untested this week and remain the team to beat in the East. Three weeks from now may prove to be a different story as the Maroons face inter county rival Southwestern. After a disappointing loss in that game a year ago, Pulaski County may be ready to prove more then they belong ahead of Bowling Green.

Owensboro, coming off a big win over Christian County, will look to get another win this week? Another big test comes in a couple weeks when the Red Devils face Graves County, a team that will be ready to prove something. How will Owensboro fair the remainder of the season? Are they ready for a meeting with Bowling Green?

Fern Creek is still impressing some people. After shutting out 6A Southern, they seem ready to continue their winning ways. Will they be ready for a long playoff run? Is Fern Creek the team that surprise Class 5A?

Southwestern had the week off and has that game with Pulaski County circles on the calendar, but they will have to face a few teams before that meeting. Can Southwestern beat Pulaski County two years in a row, in the regular season? What about the rematch in the playoffs?

Christian County was unable to beat #3 Owensboro, but they are winning a lot more then they are losing and has a few weeks to connect the problems before they square off with Graves County and John Hardin. Will Christian County be prepared for the rough schedule that remains?

North Laurel remains undefeated, against a less then challenging schedule. Will they be challenge before the playoffs? Will Jaguars be able to continue their winning ways come playoff time?

Covington Catholic had their easiest week of their difficult schedule, having the week off. Now the money games begin, the Colonels will start district play with Grant County, then the big matchup with rival Highlands. Will Covington Catholic be able to beat the Bluebirds and getting in the driver’s seat for the playoffs?

South Oldham won another game last week, beating Nelson County 42-7, making the Dragons 5-1 with some difficult games remaining. Will South Oldham win out? How will the Dragons fair in the playoffs.

Highlands remain ranked despite a, less then spectacular, performance on the season. Like foe, Covington Catholic, the Bluebirds had the week off preparing for the games that matter. Highlands will start, what they hope is a turnaround, against Dixie Heights. We all know Highlands is really hoping to win the only game that matters - Covington Catholic.

The teams just outside of the Top 10 stayed the same, with no losses in that group. Greenwood, North Bullitt and Graves County all got wins. While Anderson County and Montgomery County had the week off. How far are these teams behind the pack? Can any of them move into the Top 10?
