article Class 5A Notebook (9-28): Who's Getting it Done at the Half-Way Point

After the half-way point of the season it appears the top teams are clearer. For the third week in a row, the top 5 teams in Class 5A are going to say the same and the top 10 teams are pretty secure. This week, we do have one match up that could shake things up a little: #3 Owensboro vs. #6 Christian County. Will Owensboro be able to prove they are the number three team in Class 5A? Or, will they be exposed by a very good Christian County team?

Bowling Green will have a slow week at the office, facing an outmatched Grayson County team. This may the week the Purples work on some things that need to be fixed before the playoffs. This game will be played on Thursday, so some Western Kentucky fans may be able to get a double header in on Thursday and Friday.

Pulaski County will take on a good 6A Henry Clay team. Will Pulaski County be able to take their winning streak to four?

The Class 5A game of the week will put the aforementioned Owensboro against Christian County. All fans of Class 5A should have their eyes on this game as it will tell us a lot about the top five teams in the class. Owensboro comes into the game 4-1 with their only loss coming in a close battle with #1 Bowling Green. The Red Devils played the Purples to a three point game and proved they are in the discussion at the top. Christian County brings a record of 5-1 into this game with their only loss coming to, yes, that’s right Bowling Green. The Colonels did not play the Purples as close as did Owensboro, losing 55-14. That is a 38 point difference in the comparison between Owensboro and Christian County against Bowling Green. Something to think about in that comparison, Christian County lost to Bowling Green in their second game, but Owensboro lost to Bowling Green in their fourth game. How much has Christian County improved over that time? Can the Colonels surprise Owensboro?

For the Louisville fans that haven’t had a chance to watch Fern Creek this year, this is your opportunity. Fern Creek will take on Southern on Thursday this week. Fern Creek as shown they belong in the top 5 of Class 5A and look for them to prove it yet again this week. Can Southern give them a test?

North Laurel is still undefeated, and will likely stay that way as they battle with Whitley County this week. What does Whitley County bring to the table in this match-up?

South Oldham takes on Nelson County this week. These two teams are heading in different directions. South Oldham is sitting at 4-1 with their only loss to a good Anderson County team. Nelson County is 2-4 losing their last two games by large margins. Can Nelson County hang with the Dragons?

Taking the week off: Southwestern, Covington Catholic and Highlands.

Southwestern is 5-1 and is gearing up for their matchup with Pulaski County in several weeks. They will take the week to look ahead a little, maybe.

Covington Catholic has made it to the off week. Their schedule is ridiculously difficult and making it to this point is a good thing. After this week, we find out just how good the Colonels are in regards to the class. Will the difficult schedule show it’s benefits next week?

Likewise, Highlands made it to the off week. The Bluebirds have taken a beating, on the field, and on the field of public opinion. Like Covington Catholic, next week we find out what Highlands can do with teams in their class. Is Highlands going to be the Highlands we expect when district play starts?

Teams to watch out for: Greenwood, Anderson County, North Bullitt, Montgomery County and Graves County.

Greenwood is 5-1 coming on a win against 2A Glasgow.

Anderson county took a big set-back to 6A Paul Dunbar last week and are .500 on the season.

North Bullitt is another 5-1 team coming off a win against county rival Bullitt Central in a shoot out, 47-44.

Montgomery County lost last week to #5 Southwestern. It was an expected loss, but the Indians put 29 points on the board.

Graves County is 3-3 but is coming off a win over Apollo.

Great Stuff RAM! I like the Greenwood team! They have played well this year! I think they get second in BGs district and could get a playoff win as long as they don't have to go to Owensboro.

17 of Montgomery's points came as snaps sailed over punters head and into the endzone, or was rolled to the upback at the five. Punter knocked it out of the endzone for a safety on one. The Indians only managed 27 total yards offense in the first half, yet had 17 points. They put 12 offensive points on the board against SW defense in the game.
