Big Time Week Zero Matchups

Three of the preseason top five teams will take on ranked opponents from Class 6A on opening weekend. #3 Boyle County will face 6A #9 Central Hardin at the Fort Harrod Bowl at Mercer County. Both programs are in year two with terrific head coaches and both are looking to advance beyond last year's regional runner-up showings. This game has been one of the most discussed on BGP all summer and has all the makings of a barn-burner.

In the Derby City, last season's state runner-up Central will travel to historic Manual Stadium to face the Manual Crimsons in their annual season opener. Manual is rated #4 in the preaseason BGP 6A rankings and many are anxious to see if the gap has closed between them and their former Super District brethren. 3A #4 Central returns a host of starters from last year's team and should again be in the mix to wear the 3A crown. If you are in Louisville on Friday, this is one of the best games to be at.

Way out west, 3A #5 Paducah Tilghman will travel to 6A #8 McCracken County on Saturday night looking for a county championship (if there is such a thing!). McCracken County is in their third season after consolidation and the Tornado and Mustangs have split their two previous meetings. Many are expecting a significant jump for Tilghman in Coach Mike Rogers' second season at the helm and this marks the first game of an absolutely stacked schedule for the Blue Tornado.

Questions to Answer

The bottom of the top ten and the five just outside all have questions to answer before they can be seriously considered contenders this season. #7 Corbin travels down I-75 to face Whitley County in a matchup many have wanted for a long time. #8 Bell County plays host to county rival Middlesboro in a rivalry that Bell dominated for years but have now lost two straight. #9 Garrard County will look to rebound from a sub-par scrimmage showing when they face Shelby County. Adair County gets a chance to prove last season was no fluke with their opener against Dudley Hilton's Taylor County Cardinals. Caldwell County will look to replace Mr. Football and Purdue-signee Elijah Sindelar against 5A #1 0 Christian County in a matchup that has seen huge numbers put on the board each of the last two seasons. And finally, Trigg County will look to step among the elite in the class with an opener against a 1A state title dark horse in Russellville.

Sitting This One Out

While most everyone else is getting after it in their season opener this weekend, two of Kentucky's best in 3A will try to get in a little more practice and/or a scrimmage. Preseason #1 Belfry will head across the Ohio River to scrimmage South Point on Friday night, while #6 Russell has already completed their scrimmages and will prepare for their opener with county rival Greenup County next Saturday.

Central, Boyle Co., and PT all play top 10 6A opponents this week. Each team has a chance to make a huge statement with a win. 3A is already highly regarded to begin with, but can you imagine how crowded the top of this class will be if 3A were to sweep 6A in these three games?

Meanwhile, the two time defending champs have to wait another week to sink their teeth into the 2015 season. Ditto for my Red Devils. I hate Week 0 byes.:(

.. and when they do it will also be another 6A team. That same week LexCath plays the #1 4A team and Tilghman the #1 2A team.
