Notre Dame 3 Newport Central Catholic 1

It was a beautiful day for softball in Newport as the Breds and Pandas hook up for an afternoon match-up.

It was a Battle of Pitchers, as Notre Dame's Haylee Smith faced off against NewCath's Haley Meyers. Both go the distance tossing 3-hitters with 8 K's each, however the Breds Haley had some control issues as she walks 6 and hits 4 batters. The young Mrs. Meyers did collect one of the Breds hits and provided some nice defense in the circle.

Notre Dame's Katelyn Baker leads off the game with a nubber off the end of the bat that falls in front of Breds 2nd baseman Casey Kohls and just does beat the throw. Rylee Stephenson lays down the nice 1-4 sac to advance Baker. Haylee Smith walks, but during the Kennedy Baugh strikeout a passed ball & wild pitch allow Baker to score. NewCath goes 1,2,3 in their half of the 1st.

Notre Dame adds one in the 2nd aided by HBP,K,BB,HBP, & an RBI BB by Baker. NewCath gets their lone run of the game in their half of the frame as Loren Zimmerman doubles down the leftfield line. One out later Haley Meyers hits one (with some English on it) that 3rd baseman Katelyn Baker manages to stop with a nice reaching grab, and her throw is not in time and eludes the 1st baseman allowing Zimmerman to score.

In the Pandas 3rd after one out, Angela Huston sends a "screamer" to the leftcenter fence for a double. Following a Mackenzie Sullivan walk Erica Huston lays down a nice sac bunt that Loren Zimmerman fields barehanded, but her throw is errant an allows Angela Huston to score. The Pandas leave them loaded as a PO5 & K end the inning. NewCath gets a 2 out walk from Casey Kohls, but she is stranded.

Notre Dame threatens to open it up in the 4th as Rylee Stephenson gets on via a dropped fly ball, Haylee Smith walks, Kennedy Baugh sac bunt 1-4, Angela Huston loads the bases on a HBP. The Breds "flash the leather" to get out of the inning unscathed, Mackenzie Sullivan hits a comebacker to Haley Meyers who fires to catcher Kristen Schreiber who then sends a "missile" to Kennedy Bin at 1st to complete the 1-2-3 double play.

Haley Meyers gains her control in the Notre Dame 5th, 6th, & 7th allowing only a "flare" over SS Michaela Ware that barely makes the outfield grass and a walk.

NewCath would get 3 more on base the remainder of the game......a leadoff walk from Zimmerman in the 4th, but she is left at 3rd, a HBP of Zimmerman in the 6th, and a two out single to center in the 7th off the bat of Lexi Breen.
