Last Week's Game of the Week - There were a couple of strong games from last week, but one was for a title and it went to overtime. I felt strongly enough about the odds of Monroe County and Clinton County facing in the finals to make it one of my picks last week, and they didn't disappoint, rolling to the finals for a matchup of our #1 and #4 teams. Monroe County led most of the way, but were never able to stray too far from Clinton County, holding a 23-20 halftime lead that swelled to 40-32 after a John Geralds three at the third quarter buzzer. But Clinton County scratched and clawed back as Monroe County missed seven crucial free throws down the stretch, allowing a Keifer Dalton three ball to tie it at 52 and send it to an extra session. Incredibly, no points were scored until Dillon Geralds hit a free throw with 14 seconds left. Then everything went crazy. Geralds missed his second free throw and the Falcons committed a foul on the rebound to put Clinton County on the line..... where they missed the front end of a one and one. Go to the other end where Ty Mink had two shots for the Falcons. Missed them both. Then Dalton fouls out of the game for Clinton County via a charge. Then Monroe County turns the ball over. All of this took place in a span of 8 seconds. Clinton County had the ball with a chance to win but the guy you'd want shooting it was on the bench having fouled out. Ultimately, the Bulldogs missed two shots that would have won it, giving Monroe County the 4th Region All "A" Championship via a single Dillon Geralds free throw in overtime. A game worthy of former district rivals, top 5 region teams, and of a title.

Honorable Mention - A strong contender was the South Warren at Russell County matchup on Friday. The Lakers have made a strong effort to schedule more of the region at-large, and this was their third matchup against a 14th District team. Some of the shine came off of this game as Russell County entered having lost three of four and South Warren had gotten knocked around by Warren Central on Tuesday, also their third loss in four games. Russell County used the homecourt to their advantage most of the night with leads of 7, 9, and 9 at the intermissions, but the only one that mattered was the last one, and South Warren got that with a 70-69 victory. 8th grader Marquise Walker drained two free throws with no time on the clock for the win.

Lovan Watch - Tavin Lovan, one of the most prolific scorers in the region despite being just a sophomore, has been sidelined since December 12th with a broken non-shooting wrist. Franklin-Simpson started the year 3-1 with him, but since he went down, they're 2-14. Word at the time was that he was targeting a January 30th matchup with Todd County Central, and it appears that he is on track for exactly that as the cast is reportedly off. The Wildcats still have three district games remaining, including crucially a pair of matchups with Todd County Central. At current, those games may determine the #3/#4 seed in the district, and avoiding Logan County, which has almost clinched the top seed.

All "A" - Monroe County will take on Murray in the first round of the All "A" Classic, and should be favored in that one. Should they advance, they may get a crack at Williamsburg, the final undefeated team in the state.

Upcoming Games of the Week

1/27 - #5 Logan County at #6 Barren County - The Cougars have a seven game winning streak entering this one, and will look to snap a three game skid against the Trojans. Meanwhile Barren County is looking to climb the rankings, and their only three losses since December 20th have been to Monroe County, Warren Central, and Bowling Green - our top 3 teams.

1/30 - #2 Warren Central at #3 Bowling Green - Round 1 went to overtime with the Dragons coming out on top, knocking the Purples off their #1 perch where they'd been since preseason. In Round 2, Bowling Green will look to get that one back in a crucial seeding game.

1/31 - #3 Bowling Green at #1 Monroe County - I'm including this one because if played it will be outstanding, but my feeling is that Monroe County will be too good for our hopes, and will advance in the All "A", likely sinking this game (if it isn't already preemptively canceled). If they play, Monroe County will be looking to put a stranglehold on the #1 rank for the rest of the year.

Enjoyed your recap of the All A Championship game.

That sounds like the craziest quarter minute of basketball you'll see. Also, 1 point in the entire extra session is crazy.

Sounds like Monroe really needs to shore up their free throw shooting, or they'll have trouble making a run in the All A State.

That Monroe County shoots just 55.2% from the line is a jarring statistic. I never dreamed there could be a team that made Warren Central look good from the charity stripe. I'm particularly shocked at Dillon Geralds shooting just 53.4% from the line.

Monroe is the type of team that if they get hot from three will bury you, but yeah, in a close game, free throws will get you eventually. And they'll start having those in situations like the All "A".
