#1- Augusta Starts Perfect

We'll begin our review of Week 1 with one of two Region squads that laced it up three times and came away with three victories. Jason Hinson's Panthers won a pair of home games on Monday (St. Patrick, 73-53) and Wednesday (Robertson County, 68-59), before taking out Lloyd (73-57) in a road game on Saturday. The 10th's top player Brent Bach was as advertised in all three outings, scoring 29, 29, & 30 points respectively. Sophomore guard Connor Maddox has been a reliable #2 guy for Augusta, averaging 19.3 ppg for the week and continuing his torrid 3-point shooting. On the bad news side, sophomore guard Owens Crawford was injured in the season opener and will miss at least 6-8 weeks. The injury to Crawford is something to monitor, as it has made an already thin roster thinner.

#2- Brossart Bigs Dominate

The 10th Region's top front-line delivered on three separate occasions last week, as senior big men Alex Trentman & Drew Burns led Bishop Brossart to a 3-0 record in Week 1. Trentman (21 ppg) & Burns (20 ppg) had their way in victories over St. Henry (64-47), Newport (66-57) & Georgetown, Ohio (72-59). The duo is also getting it done on the glass, with Trentman pulling down 10.3 rpg & Burns 8 rpg. The Mustangs were also beyond pleased in getting quality production from starting point guard Jake Jennings, who has stepped in to fill the void left behind by the departed Ben Uebel. The senior guard has an amazing 6-to-1 Assist-to-Turnover ratio after one week of action.

#3- Wallace leads Montgomery To Season Opening Win

The top team in the Region didn't get into action until Saturday, but Jason Holland's debut as Montgomery County head coach was impressive. The Indians throttled 16th Region power Ashland, 95-60, led by 6'0 senior guard Bryan Wallace's 29 points, 5 assists, & 3 steals. Montgomery's length & athleticism forced 21 Tomcats turnovers and the defending Region champs used a 17-2 3rd quarter run to blow out the visitors in the Bart Rison Classic.

#4- No Holbrook, No Problem

Aric Russell's Campbell County Camels traveled to Dixie Heights on Saturday minus their best player--one of the 10th's top five overall talents, Corey Holbrook. Still, the Camels came away with a 79-77 victory by placing four players in double figures. Junior wing Dre Jackson led the way with 17 points and fellow junior Blake Losey added 14. A pair of sophomores, big man Matt Wilson & guard Trent McGovney, both chipped in 12.

#5- Freshman Leads Polar Bears To 2-0 Start

Bracken County's Austin Crawford staked his claim as the 10th's top freshman in Week 1, scoring 26 points & pulling down 8 rebounds in a season opening home victory over Bath County. The savvy point guard followed that performance up with 17 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals in a 42-23 win at St. Patrick on Saturday. The 6'1" Crawford is a handful for opposing defenses, with a special combination of athleticism and skill. Polar Bears senior forward Ryan May was also solid, averaging 12.5 rpg last week, including 11 points & 12 rebounds in the Bath County win.

#6- Paris Struggles Early

In our 10th Region season preview, we labeled Terrence Brooks & the Paris Greyhounds a sleeper team for 2013-14, but things have gotten off to a rocky start for the 'Hounds. Paris went to Maysville on Tuesday & lost a physical battle to fellow Class "A" squad St. Patrick, 55-48. A 40th District matchup in Winchester with George Rogers Clark on Friday night went awry in the 2nd half, as the Cards turned up the pressure & pulled away for a 64-47 win. It's way too early to hit any panic buttons, but it doesn't get any easier for Paris as they host Montgomery County on Tuesday.

#7- GRC Wins A Pair

Coming off a season of just nine wins, Scott Humphrey's George Rogers Clark team started 2013-14 off 2-0, scoring a 58-42 win over Nicholas County on Tuesday & then the 64-47 triumph over Paris on Friday. The Cards have had a balanced attack thus far, but three players do seem to stand out: junior forward Luke Sharrock (14 ppg) senior big man Khmarkis Blanton (12.5 ppg), & junior guard Damion King (10.5 ppg). King is of particular interest, as the 5'6" guard earned 9 points & 10 rebounds in the win over Nicholas.

#8- Royals Shoot Lights Out

Guard play may have been Mason County's weakness last season, but for at least one game, Chris O'Hearn has seen vast improvement in this area. Guard Lukas Greenhill scorched The Fieldhouse nets on Tuesday night, leading the Royals to a 79-70 victory over Boyd County. Greenhill's 5-8 3-point shooting led to a career scoring night of 27 points for the senior. As a team, Mason County connected on 9-19 from beyond the arc. Senior big man Shawn Johnson battled foul trouble, but still earned 22 points & 8 rebounds on 9-10 shooting.

#9- Turnovers Plague Harrison County

Larry Kendall's Thorobreds traveled to Oldham County on Monday night and found themselves in comfortable positions to win on a few occasions. The Breds jumped out to a 20-10 lead in the 1st quarter & then maintained that lead in the 2nd, going to the locker room up 40-30. The Breds extended that lead to as many as 14 points in the third quarter before Oldham turned up the defensive pressure, leading to numerous Harrison County turnovers. Still, Kendall's team led by 6 entering the final frame, but was unable to keep the lead and the game went to Overtime. With just two minutes left to play in the Overtime period, the Breds were again ahead 84-79, but the Colonels would outscore the visitors 8-1 the rest of the way, sending Harrison back to Cynthiana with an 87-85 defeat. Junior forward Trenton Thompson led the Breds with 19 points & 13 rebounds, while sophomore Zack Pulliam added a double-double as well, with 16 points & 11 boards. But the most glaring statistic was Harrison County's 25 turnovers, compared to Oldham County's 11.

#10- Scott: Saving The Best For Last

Brad Carr's Eagles notched victories on Tuesday (Calvary Christian, 62-24) & Thursday (Pendleton County, 81-65) before falling 91-72 to Taft on Saturday. While the Eagles have been getting good play from guards Blake Schneider & Jeremy Jackson, along with senior big man Kameron Crim, the story of the week in the 10th Region was Brody Flynn. In one of the most heartwarming moments you'll see all season long, Flynn, a senior with Down syndrome, entered the Calvary Christian game in the 4th quarter & scored a basket, sending the crowd into a frenzy. It was a special moment & a lot of class was shown by both Scott & Calvary Christian.
