By silo11 - 1st Region Boys Basketball Preview Region 1 probably had the best championship game of all regions last year watching upstart Mayfield and favorite Graves County go into overtime. Graves came out on top but Mayfield put the whole region on notice that they will be back for the 2017-18 season as they return two of the top players in West Kentucky in the Guthrie brothers. A lot of teams were hit pretty hard by graduation this offseason. There are quite a few teams that will be starting over and others that are rising to the top. Region 1 has a few senior players to watch... Read More →

3A Notebook: When the Music Stops

By gchs_uk9 - Central Stomps Belfry, Marks End of an Era From Week 3 to today Bluegrasspreps' rankings have shown the same five teams in the top five spots. It has been a foregone conclusion that the Class 3A champion would come from this handful of teams. However, with a playoff format that sends four teams to the state semifinals, it has long been known that one of the five would be left without a seat when the music quit playing. On Friday night, Belfry was the odd man out. And for a program that has won four straight championships, played in seven straight finals, and gone at least as far as the... By mooremiller31 - The Scott County Cardinals returned to the top of the always tough region last season. Compared to years past the overall talent in the 11th Region might be a little down but this region will still produce some of the top players and teams in the state. As always expect the winner of this region to head to Rupp Arena as one of the favorites to cut down the nets. Team Rankings 1. Scott County The Cardinals return arguably one of the best squads in the state of Kentucky led by Junior Michael Moreno. Moreno is a superstar who has improved every year and I expect no less this season. The... Read More →

Board of Control on Future Hoops Calendar, Regional Alignment & State Advancement

By theguru - For Immediate Release: November 16, 2017 The Board of Control conducted a regularly scheduled meeting at the KHSAA Offices on Wednesday morning, during which time it addressed a future basketball scheduling conflict, the placement of a new school in 2018-19 and revised state qualifying in two championships. With a facility conflict pending at Rupp Arena in 2021 due to the venue hosting first round games of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, an adjustment to the basketball calendar was necessary to accommodate the Sweet 16®. In addition, the girls’ basketball tournament was... Read More → 15th Region Boys Basketball Preview

By 15th Region - 2017-2018 15th Region Preview 15th Region Overview (Competitive Balance): Top to bottom, the 15th Region may not have the same level of talent and caliber of teams we see in regions like the 7th and 11th, but competitive balance within itself makes for great atmospheres, packed gyms and heated rivalries many places in Kentucky might not experience on a nightly basis. This year's top teams also have cyclical match-up advantages and disadvantages with one another. Let me explain. Pikeville (reigning champs who return every player) match up well against Johnson Central with their... Read More →

The earliest days of high school basketball in Louisville

By Smallhoops - Brooksville's recent post about the oldest basketball rivalry in Kentucky prompted some discussion about how long Male and Manual have been playing each other in basketball. Having looked at that question recently, I thought I would share what I have found about the early days of high school basketball in Louisville, although I readily admit that there may be gaps in my information. As was the case in most cities, basketball arrived in Louisville through the YMCA. On March 24, 1894, less than three years after Dr. Naismith invented the game at the Springfield, Massachusetts YMCA, the... Read More → 12th Region Boys Basketball Preview

By SHS Future - 12th Region Boys Basketball Preview Basketball season is just around the corner and teams across the Bluegrass are getting themselves ready for what should be another exciting year of Kentucky Hoops. The conversation so many avid fans are having at this time of the years is who will be the best team and represent their region at Rupp Arena come March? Most know it is not an easy task to win a region title. That is definitely true in the 12th Region as Pulaski County cut down the nets last year for the first time since 1992. However, now that the Maroons have that crown they are not going... Read More → 6th Region Boys Basketball Preview

By coachlee - The Fern Creek Tigers made school history last season advancing to the State Sweet 16 Championship for the 1st time in school history. After taking 94 years for Fern Creek to win a regional championship, can they turn around and repeat this season for their 2nd consecutive trip to Rupp? Recent history in the 6th region indicates that trips to Rupp in March come in 2's. In 2011 & 2012 Bullitt East went back to back. In 2013 & 2014 PRP represented the 6th in Lexington. Then in 2015 & 2016 it was the turn of the Doss Dragons to have a repeat trip. Now in 2018 will it be Fern Creek to continue... Read More →

Class 4A Notebook (11/13): Winding Roads To Get There, Finals We (Mostly) Expected

By DragonFire - It’s worth noting that the top six teams in the final 4A poll are still standing….. Region 1 Reset Well, they took an odd path to get here, but the region finals that most expected coming into the year is what we ended up with – Hopkinsville against Franklin-Simpson. Franklin has been straight forward in their approach, notching their seventh consecutive victory in a 62-6 battering of Madisonville-North Hopkins, and running their record to 9-3. The Wildcats haven’t allowed more than 14 points since a 35-19 win at Glasgow, and they have scored 43 points or more in their last five... Read More →

High School Football in Kentucky - Playoff Structure

By ThrowItDeep - Thought I would throw my two cents in on the playoff structure.... This isn't a shot at KHSAA by any means. I consider Julian a good friend and he wants the best interest of football in our state. I really believe that. Not saying their hands are tied, but in a way they are... I coached for 12 years as head coach at Edmonson County from 2004-2015. I'm just an AD now, but I still want high school football in our state to be the best it can be. Traditionally, our school hasn't had tremendous success in the playoffs. Before the move to six classes, our school had only won 6 playoff wins... Read More →

3A Notebook: Powell County Erases Chalk in Victory over Casey County

By gchs_uk9 - Powell County to Make Second Appearance in Regional Final Chalk is a gambling term which refers to the favored team or horse. If you bet on the favorite, you are betting the chalk. It stems from the days when your neighborhood bookie would write all the betting lines on a chalkboard. Eight second round Class 3A playoff games were played on Friday night and in seven the team ranked highest by Bluegrasspreps won. The eighth game was a surprise. Because of that shock, the Powell County Pirates will host Corbin in the regional final next week. Powell County, losers of their first four... Read More → 10th Region Boys Basketball Preview

By mcpapa - 10th REGION OVERVIEW Hoops season is right around the corner. The 2017-2018 season - and regional tournament - will have to go some to match the last couple of campaigns. 2015-16 saw Mason County make an improbable run in the tourney with three come-from-behind wins, and last year had a district runner-up come within an eyelash of taking down the eventual state champs in the final four of the Sweet Sixteen. This time around, the Cardinals of George Rogers Clark look to be the preemptive favorite, returning virtually every significant contributor from a season ago - and adding a couple... By Smallhoops - 7th Region Boys Basketball Preview The Ballard Bruins were the Kings of the Seventh Region last year, finishing 29-7 for the year (16-0 in the Seventh Region) and advancing to the quarterfinals of the state tournament where they fell to Fern Creek 55-52. If recent history repeats itself, Ballard winning the region last year means Trinity will win it this year. And Trinity, with perhaps the three best returning players in the region, appears ready to do just that. But Ballard might have something to say about that, as it did last year when the Bruins beat Trinity... Read More →

Scott County Quarterback Josh Davis - Beyond Impressive

By Quiet_Storm11 - Scott County's Quarterback Josh Davis could not be a more perfect fit to balance out their high powered running attack. As a 3 year starter, he is 31-6 (31-2 against KY foes), has a 65% completion rating, throwing for 3625 yards and 45TDs, with only 6 INTs. He has 17 career rushing touchdowns as well. His senior year has been the most impressive, as Josh has lead the Cardinals to a 9-2 record through the 1st round of the playoffs, completing 74% percent of his passes for 1174 yards, 16 TDs, 2 INTs, with 2 rushing touchdowns as well. Under his command the Scott County offense has averaged 45... Read More → 8th Region Boys Basketball Preview

By ColonelMike - 2017-18 8th Region Boys Preview By: Colonelmike & 8th Region Warrior If there’s one thing we should have learned by now about the 8th Region boys basketball tournament, it’s this advice, borrowed from perhaps, from a horse racing handicapper: Don’t bet the favorite. For the last five years, the mantle of “favorite” has been a curse to the team wearing it… Last year, Oldham County entered the tournament as the prohibitive favorite – and promptly lost in the first round to eventual champ Collins. Two years ago, Owen County was the overwhelming choice – and they also lost in the first... Read More →
