Ten 2017 Story Lines I Am Ready To Follow

By ATLCat - 1. Will Coach Weinrich right the ship in Fort Thomas? If you follow Kentucky High School Football whatsoever you would be lying if you didn't notice that Highlands hasn't exactly been vintage form since Dale Mueller retired. Apologists and detractors can point to numerous reasons or excuses, but the fact remains that 2017 will be the pivotal year for us to see if Highlands will return to form or be asked to make a change at the helm. 2. Has a Changing of the Guard Occurred in Class 2A? Mayfield has seemingly ruled Kentucky Small School Football for the past decade and last year... Read More →

My only good story from high school, according to my wife Stephanie

By ChiefSmoke - Stephanie says I only have one good story from high school, but I have been able to get some mileage from it over the years. One Saturday night in early September, 1982, myself and three friends went to see a movie in Danville. You may not remember Fast Times at Ridgemont High but I bet most of us old guys do remember Phoebe Cates. After the movie, our driver decides he wants to meet a girl he saw in the theatre. We drive out to the bowling alley in Danville to find her. Our first time through the parking lot, a few of the guys out there yell stuff at us. Undeterred, my buddy continues... Read More →

Sometimes being the dumbest guy in the room is ok

By ChiefSmoke - Some times it is good being the dumbest guy in the room. This was my second day visiting Centre College spring practice. I got to sit in on a defensive meeting, team meeting, QB meeting, and watch practice. I especially enjoyed the kick off return drill work they did today. Football programs have their own language and verbiage. It is healthy for me to hear a different approach to the game. Football is football. But, the ways we can attack problems and teach the game can have multiple methods. I always think it makes me better when I see and hear a coach teach something in a different way... Read More →

WKY Power Rankings - Offseason Discussion

By Purple88 - With the completion of today's Final Winter Workouts, Teams move into Spring Break with surf, sand and girls on their minds or at least staying out of the weight room for awhile!!! And with that Spring workouts and practice are on the horizon! 2016 was a terrific year for many teams in the west and I think 2017 will be as well, but before we get there, let's look back at the final 2016 Power Rankings (issued on October 30, 2016) and see where we stood at that time: 1. Bowling Green 5A (10-0) 2. Mayfield 2A (10-0) Read More →

EKY Power Ranking- Offseason Discussion

By ATLCat - The ground is beginning to thaw out, pollen fills the air, the grass is becoming green, and Spring Football is set to begin. We will evaluate how the EKY power Rankings finished in 2016, and also take a glance at what we think they will look like as the page turns to 2017. Will familiar names fall down or even off the list? Will new names challenge the top? WHo will be the top players? EKY brough home two titles and a pair of State Runner-Up finishes, will the tally change in 2017? Let us take a trip back to early November where we left off the EKY Power Rankings: 1. 3A Belfry... NKY Power Ranking - Offseason Discussion

By Colonels_Wear_Blue - With spring practices all getting started within the next 2 weeks or so, and less than 5 months until opening kickoff for the 2017 football season, I thought we could take a look back at my final regular season power rankings from the 2016. How do you think these final power rankings compare to the way they pre-season power rankings should look come 2017? Will there be any big moves up or down by any of the teams on the list? What players do you see being mentioned in 2017 when it comes to Northern Kentucky players of the week? This is also anybody's chance to tell me "I told... Read More →

Old City School Football..... Nick & George Yeast

By ChiefSmoke - If you are around old city school football, you never know who you will run into. One day at Paris, I noticed a car parked near our practice field at Garrard Park. As I walk closer to the car, I realize that Bill Arnsparger has come to watch our practice! Tonight, D Smith(UK) & Tyus Short(Ky State U) announced where they will play college football. They are both part of the Yeast family and one of the highlights for me tonight was visiting with Nick & George Yeast! Nick & George played against my Dad's Mercer teams in the mid 70s. They were very good players at Harrodsburg HS. Nick... Read More →

Why We Do What We Do.... the Timing of Spring Practice

By ChiefSmoke - When the KHSAA allowed football coaches to move their spring practice window to later in the spring, many programs chose to move their practice dates to April or May. That gives them better weather and allows college coaches to visit and watch practice. We have continued to do ours immediately after basketball and here is why: 1- if there are injuries, we have more time to recover before the season begins. By going early, we get the most opportunities for live contact. I think live contact is very beneficial, but it is tough to get live full-speed reps, and take the ball carrier to the... Read More →

Fun is good.... Purpose and Service are Better

By ChiefSmoke - Coaching HS football is FUN! If that were not the case, we wouldn't do it. Friday night victories, being with our players & coaches, enjoying a productive practice are all times we enjoy. But, what about the tough times? How do we navigate those? We have a bunch of tough times when we are coaching football. I would argue that everyday that is not enjoyable is actually an exceptional OPPORTUNITY for living out our purpose and serving others. The toughest thing I have ever witnessed a coach go through was when Robert Allen Yankey drown on a Friday morning after a football game,... Read More →

Sweet 16 to Final 4

By Hellbird - In all my 50+ years, this is the very first time I've been to the sweet 16. I've always heard what a great event and how incredible the atmosphere is and it's a must see for any basketball fan. Well I've never been before mostly because no team I was affiliated with (fan or alumni) has never been so I didn't think I would be that into it if I just went to watch. So this year my Cooper Jaguars shocked everyone outside of Union by knocking off the Perenial favorites in the Giants of Cov Cath to earn their first ever regional title and sweet 16 birth. So this was the year, after only 9... Read More →

Toughness vs. Entitlement

By ChiefSmoke - We finished our first 5 days of spring practice this morning. We are making progress and showing improvement. I would also add that there have been times that we have looked absolutely ugly.... which is to be expected with a young team in its first few spring practices. I think the football parts will work themselves out and we will have an opportunity to have a good team. Two things that make me feel good about our team and reinforce to me that I am coaching great kids: 1- Our practice on Tuesday was for 2 hours and the wind chill was 23 degrees. It was cold and even tough for me.... Read More →

KHSAA Sweet Sixteen Preview - Pikeville

By 15th Region - Pikeville (23-8: 59th District Champion / 15th Region Champion) The Pikeville Panthers advanced to the state tournament for the first time in 18 years as they won the 15th Region this season. With great guard play, grit, and clutch performances by their star Wyatt Battaile, Pikeville blazed through the 15th Region Tournament by knocking off Belfry 72-62 in the quarterfinals, South Floyd 82-75 after trailing by seven in the 4th quarter in the semifinals, and Johnson Central 95-84 after trailing by 18 at the five minute mark of the 2nd quarter in the Championship. Stealing Reps, Utilizing Quality Coaches, 21st century reality

By ChiefSmoke - We had our first day of spring football today and it was a very good start. For the first time, I am not coaching a position. I will continue to call the offense. But, with Trosper, my son, on the way as a QB, I don't need to be his position coach. And, we have a highly qualified, former college QB and former HS head coach on staff in Graham Heasley who is doing a great job with that position. Practice flowed much smoother without me worrying about coaching the QBs. It also freed me up to interact with all positions, coaches, and kids. I really liked that part the best. When I coached the... Read More →
