2015-16 Bluegrasspreps' Girls 6th Region Preview

By Jesse James - Another exciting high school basketball season is just around the corner. The girls 6th region should be very interesting this year with several teams in the mix to compete in the State Tournament which will be held at Northern Kentucky University for the first time after a long stint at Diddle Arena on the campus of Western Kentucky University. A couple of weeks ago, there were what most considered two preseason favorites in Butler and Bullitt East. An unfortunate season-ending surgery for Bullitt East star and recent University of Kentucky commit, Lindsey Duvall, may have separated Butler... Read More →

2015-2016 BluegrassPreps' Girls 8th Region Preview

By Jesse James - The Favorite 1. Simon Kenton Simon returns as a clear cut favorite this season after winning the region in 2015. Simon boasts a strong core led by region POY candidate Sophomore Allyson Niece (16.5 PPG). Niece returns along with junior center Madi Meier (10.3 PPG, 8.3 RPG), and a strong core of players looking to make their mark on the 8th region. Simon will have a chance to prove it belongs in the state’s elite with an early season trip to Lexington for the Lexington Catholic Holiday Classic. The Contenders 2. Walton-Verona: Region POY candidate Haley Ison (SR, 18.1 PPG) leads... Read More →

Bluegrasspreps' 2015-16 15th Region Basketball Preview

By 15th Region - 15th Region Overview (Anticipation versus Reality): Last season Johnson Central won their 4th straight 15th Region crown. A feat only previously accomplished by Inez (1934-1937) and Paintsville (1995-1998). The anticipation is that JC will hand over the crown to another team, but the reality is they are still very good and have the best coach in the region in Tommy McKenzie. Notice I did not say the most accomplished coach as there are some very good ones in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky, but it is hard to argue anyone is doing a better job than he is right now (not to say he is not... Bluegrasspreps' 2015-16 6th Region Basketball Preview

By Ram - This basketball season in the 6th Region will be much different than last season in many ways. For starters: Before last season began, it was a toss-up between two teams in PRP & Doss; this season has one team entering the season as an overwhelming favorite in Bullitt East without a serious threat unless the talented young team from Fern Creek has matured fast enough to challenge. Last season Doss beat PRP in the first game and never looked back going 16-0 in their 6th region games; Doss lost their 3 senior stars from that team making a repeat run improbable for the Dragons, but Bullitt... By Voice of Reason - Here are the regional finals matchups in 1A. (Stats included are from and Region 1 #13 Bethlehem (9-3) at #4 Russellville (10-2) Both teams are #1 seeds. The key offensive performer for Bethlehem is QB Mathew Hagan who is 85-150 for 1,147 yards on the year. One concerning factor for Bethlehem is that Hagan has thrown 10 interceptions. The key offensive performers for Russellville are Joshua Bigbee 100 carries, 1,150 yards and 12 TD's and MJ Jones 66 carries, 1,026 yards and 16 TD's. (#6 in the state in 1A). Bluegrasspreps' 2015-16 4th Region Basketball Preview

By Ram - Entering last season, it seemed like the time was as good as ever for a team outside the 14th District to compete for a title, and the region felt a little more wide open than usual. Sure, we ended with an all-14th final yet again, but Barren County pushed Bowling Green to the brink and Monroe County took down Warren Central in the regular season before faltering in the region. This year, however, entertains none of those notions. And instead of it being 14th District dominance, dominance wears a single color this time around – Purple. Preseason 4th Region Rankings 1. Bowling Green –... Read More →

Bluegrasspreps' 2015-16 16th Region Basketball Preview

By Ram - It’s that time of the year again. The popping pads of the fall will be replaced by the squeaking sneakers of the winter. It is basketball time in the bluegrass! The 16th region looks to provide another exciting year. Graduation, transfers, and some newly eligible players all look to make an impact on the upcoming season in the 16th region. Elliott County, the defending 16th region champions, look to try and repeat and win their 5th region title in ten seasons. Morgan County, last year’s runner up, looks to try and finish the job this year as they are also a favorite. Rowan County, with the... Read More →

3A Notebook - Elizabethtown, Central Make Second Round Statements

By gchs_uk9 - Elizabethtown Runs Away from Tilghman Late, Runs on to Caldwell County The questions have been there all season. Whether right or wrong, many around Kentucky 3A have wondered aloud if undefeated and sixth ranked Elizabethtown was as good as the record said. There was reason for doubt. The Panthers' twelve opponents have combined for a 53-80 record, a far cry from the opponent records of the rest of the 3A contenders. But last Friday night had always been pointed to as the chance for E-town to put itself right in the midst of the state title hopefuls. And after finishing off a 42-14 win... Read More →

Bluegrasspreps' 2015-16 13th Region Basketball Preview

By Ram - Things are going to be interesting in the 13th Region this season with both South Laurel and Clay County leading the way while the deep and talented North Laurel Jaguars not far behind. The Cardinals haven’t reached the 13th Region Tournament the past two seasons, but return the best starting five in the region. The twin tower combo of Caleb Taylor and Andrew Griffith is going to make South Laurel hard to defend while the Tigers possess two of the best seniors in the region in Blake Smith and Trey Farmer. The Jaguars are the wildcard in the region. North Laurel will be led by talented... Read More →

Bluegrasspreps' 2015-16 1st Region Basketball Preview

By Ram - Western Kentucky teams surprised many people in the sweet sixteen last year. One of those surprise teams came from Region 1 as Calloway County pulled a huge upset against Knott County Central that many had pegged as a final four team. It was a “welcome to Region 1” basketball. This year there are a couple teams that truly believe they can go even further in the sweet sixteen and there will be some great competition within region 1 this year. This year is shaping up to be one of the more competitive years in Region 1 with two teams as clear front runners, 2 more are legitimate contenders, and... Read More →

Bluegrasspreps' 2015-16 8th Region Boys Basketball Preview

By Ram - When giving a pre-view of the 8th region, keep in mind it is a pre-season glimpse of teams now, all can change from week to week, trying to be informative as I can for fans across the Bluegrass state. Last season saw the Collins Titans capture their first ever regional title in the history of their school. The Grant Count Braves captured their 2nd straight district title, and the Oldham County Colonels made it 5 district championships in a row. Stacy May was hired as the new head coach of the Trimble County Raiders, and was the only new coach at an 8th region school. The 8th region has a lot... Read More →

Bluegrasspreps' 2015-16 3rd Region Basketball Preview

By Ram - While the 3rd region is the home of the reigning state champions, the 2015/16 season is going to look much different. The region lost some heavy hitters over the summer. Some to graduation, others to prep school. Gone are reigning Sweet 16 MVP Justin Miller(22FT Academy), Aric Holman(Miss St), Mr Basketball candidate Eli Wright(22FT Academy) & top 2017 recruit Trace Young(Huntington Prep). While all of the departures will hurt the overall talent of the region, it should increase the competition level. The region may have lost talent on the floor, but it gained some on the sidelines. Three... Read More →

1A Notebook Playoffs Round 2 - Rankings and Matchups

By Voice of Reason - As we look ahead to round 2 of the 1A playoffs, I thought it might be interesting to look at each of the round 2 matchups through the lens of their end of the year rankings. #5 Russellville vs. #12 Campbellsville This matchup could have been much more interesting if Campbellsville D1 prospect Kendon Young were still at RB instead of rehabbing a knee injury. Both teams did a good job taking care of business in round 1 but this does not look good for Campbellsville in round 2. Russellville is averaging about 50 points a game in their 9 wins. I don't think they will hit that number in this... Read More →

Bluegrasspreps' 2015-16 10th Region Basketball Preview

By Randy Parker - 10TH REGION: OVERVIEW Aric Russell's Campbell County Camels cut down the nets on March 10th to repeat as 10th Region Champions in 2015. The regular season saw thorough domination by Mason County, but it was the Camels who took complete control once the bright lights of The Fieldhouse were lit for the Regional Tournament. Campbell had its way in all three Regional games, outscoring opponents by an average of 23 points per outing, including a 32-point triumph in the title game. The start of a new season brings with it talk of a 3-peat, as the defending champs return the... Read More →
