5A game of the week 9-1-17: 5A #5 Fern Creek at 3A # 4 Central

By Pete W - Fern Creek (2-0) is at Central (2-0) in the first meeting of the Tigers and Yellowjackets since the 2000 season opener at Fern Creek, when Central won 20-0. The 2017 season began with unfamiliar territory for Central, former Coach Scroggins stepped down and his replacement, Head Coach Marvin Dantzler is new to Louisville coming from Oklahoma and Louisiana. Central has adapted well with the change. Central won a defensive battle on the road at Manual, then struggled early offensively at Western then got it together in the fourth quarter with 13 unanswered points for the win. QB Rico... 2A Game of the Week: 2A Mayfield vs. 3A Paducah Tilghman

By DevilMayCare - The annual meeting between Mayfield and Paducah Tilghman is one of the oldest and best rivalries in Kentucky high school football. However, it's lost a bit of its statewide appeal lately because of its one sided nature as of late. The Cardinals are riding an 11 game winning streak over PT. That's the longest streak for either team in the history of the series. The Blue Tornado have not tasted victory since an 18-15 triumph in 2005. That recent surge by Mayfield has given them a slim 47-46-10 lead in the all-time series. This year's edition is hard to get a read on for a couple of... Read More →

Louisville Power Rankings 8-27-17

By Bert - 1. Trinity (2-0) – Trinity gets another win over an Indiana power by inching past Warren Central High School 42-41. Things do not get any easier for the Rocks as they will contend with Cincinnati Catholic power, Archbishop Moeller High School. 2. St. Xavier (1-0) – The Tigers had the week off to prepare for their trip down I65 to visit Bowling Green High School. The Purples are coming off a shocking loss, could this make them even more dangerous? Or does this make them vulnerable to St. X who Bowling Green has had success with lately. Many will be looking for answers in this game. ... Read More →

5A Notebook (8/22): Colonels, Colonels, Everywhere!

By JDEaston - With the first week of the season in the books, we have already learned quite a bit about a few teams in class 5A. First off, even with what Bowling Green lost to graduation, they are still the team to beat. However this season, the gap between the Purples and everyone else may not be as large as it was last season, that remains to be seen. When thinking of teams that present the best challenge to the Purples think of the Colonels. Take your pick between the Christian County and Covington Catholic Colonels as the top threat to the Purples this season, which will likely be an ongoing... Read More →

1A Notebook Week 1 - More Questions than Answers

By Voice of Reason - It is just one week in so we can't expect to know what all these teams have. But we were hoping to start getting a few questions answered. Instead, there might be more questions than we had before the opening games. Looking at 1A pre-season, we could split the top ten in half. The top five were more answers than questions. Each of the top five have a lot of talent returning and were solidly in place. The bottom five, that's where the questions are. So what answers did we get from the teams that played games in week 0? Week 0 Review Nothing significant to report from the top. The #1... Read More →

Class 2A Notebook (8/21): A Sharp Opening Week for a Loaded Class

By ATLCat - “Well That Escalated Quickly” Let’s face it, we all knew Class 2A was stacked in 2017, but we all looked at the Week 0 matchups and figured a the Top 10 would take a few casualties. There were athletic 6A teams, there were last years’ Semi-Finalists from other classes, there were larger schools with multiple Mr. Football candidates, there was even an Out of State powerhouse. Instead the Top 10 rattled off a 9-1 combined record, the lone loss by Somerset in a game they led most of the night. The Top 5 was especially stellar. Both Danville and DeSales looked very impressive against highly... Read More →

Class 6A Notebook 8/21: No surprises in the top 3, lots of movement elsewhere.

By thsrocks - #9 Butler High School played their way into the BGP 6A top ten with a resounding defeat of Bullitt East. The 53-0 margin was surprising as the Chargers did not lose by more than 25 points in 2016. The 53 points scored by the Bears was their high point total since a 9/21/2012 drubbing of Fairdale 57-7. The Butler roster stands at 73 and does not include any freshmen. The Bears’ Gary Wheeler, Jr took the reins in 2013 from Scott Carmony. Wheeler is now 27-22 and coming off a 4-7 slate last season. Butler competes in what many believe to be the toughest district in the Commonwealth. Their... Read More → Football Rankings (8/21)

By Ram - Class 1A While the Class' two top teams took Week 0 off, the rest of the class saw plenty of action. Paintsville, Kentucky Country Day, and Raceland all opened by defeating schools from larger classifications. Russellville and Louisville Holy Cross each took losses against quality competition in very tightly contested games. As we move forward to Week 1, the match-ups get even tougher. Pikeville, Kentucky Country Day, and Raceland all draw ranked foes, while Beechwood and Hazard will both be tested with stiff bouts of their own. 1. Beechwood at 2A Lloyd 2. Hazard vs. 5A Harlan County 3.... Read More →

Class 4A Notebook (8/21): Chaos in the Middle

By DragonFire - When the rankings were being compiled this preseason, there were few absolutes in Class 4A. Johnson Central was the clear #1, that much we knew, and obviously will remain so after opening with a bye week. Wayne County appeared to be a solid #2, and they backed that up with a 45-7 pasting of 5A Woodford County. Collins acquitted themselves as well with a 38-7 victory over Madison Southern, that saw JR Lucas account for over 400 yards of offense through the air and on the ground in addition to four scores. After that, things got…. hazy. And after the first week, things are…. well, still... Read More →
