1A Notebook 9/5 - Deja Vu?

By Voice of Reason - The top ranked Pikeville Panthers are hoping history repeats itself. After being upset by their rival, #5 ranked Paintsville Tigers 40-28, Pikeville wants to see the results flipped in the playoffs as they have been the previous two years. In 2014, Pikeville won the regular season game but was defeated in the playoffs by Paintsville. In 2015, Paintsville won the regular season matchup but lost in the playoffs. With this regular season defeat, Pikeville would sure like to see the same pattern happen and the regular season loser get revenge in the playoffs. In this 2016 regular season... Read More →

Who wants Two?

By JDEaston - If there was any doubt, Bowling Green solidified themselves as the team to beat with a convincing win over St. Xavier. The real question is who is #2? Fern Creek, Christian County and Owensboro have all had their chance to prove that they are the second best team in the class. Owensboro being the most recent team to falter after receiving the #2 ranking, lost to rival Owensboro Catholic, which to be honest was a bit of a shocker. Christian County has worked their way back into the top spot for other teams not named Bowling Green for the time being, but Covington Catholic and Greenwood are... Read More →

Lessons from Labor Day football practice

By ChiefSmoke - Friday night before our game with Anderson County got started, Todd Thompson, a former HS teammate, came by to say hello. It was great to see him and I appreciated him making the effort. It got me to thinking about Labor Days from the past and why football is a great game. Labor Day in 1981, Coach French rolls in just in time for practice, pulling his boat behind his truck. Our starting QB is Todd and he has hurt his ankle and unable to practice. As the backup, I get snaps with the first team offense. That night, we practiced full gear in a driving rain storm. My football pants are... Read More →

Bluegrassprep's Football Rankings (9/5)

By Ram - It may not have the pomp and circumstance of when a new pope is selected, but on Friday night in Class 1A the Defending Champs were demoted in convincing fashion by the Paintsville Tigers. Russellville edges into the cat bird seat, but it is not without debate, as the Panthers needed all 48 minutes to survive 2A Butler County in a shootout. Beechwood secured a hard fought win over Somerset to assume the ongoing Runner-Up role and the aforementioned Paintsville Tigers are quickly making their rush up the rankings at the third spot. Fresh on the heels of defeat there will be no rest for... Read More →

Class 4A Notebook (9/5): THE Upset

By DragonFire - It had been almost three years since South Warren had suffered a regular season loss. On October 4th, 2013, South Warren traveled to Daviess County with a perfect 6-0 record. In a stunning turn, a team that would not fail to score at least 35 points in 10 of its first 12 games posted a mere three points against a Daviess County team they were expected to dominate. The 8-3 loss was their only blemish of the regular season, and the only regular season loss they had taken from October 4th, 2012 until last week. Until last week. The defending state champion South Warren Spartans entered... Read More →

Class 2A Notebook 9/5- Measuring Stick Friday

By ATLCat - On a Serious Roll As eluded to in last week's Notebook, Class 2A had another chance to make a statement in Week 2 and did not disappoint. Mayfield, CAL, Owensboro Catholic, and Danville all collected statement wins against highly ranked teams from higher classifications. Meanwhile Newport Central Catholic and Butler County took losses to favorited foes, but did so in the tightest of fashion. The lone disappointing Top 10 team was DeSales who fell to 6A Ballard, but to call a 2A team losing to a stout 6A team as a "disappointment" is really stretching it and a testament to the level this... 3A Notebook: Who is the #3 Team in the Class?

By gchs_uk9 - Breaking Down the Class: Does Anyone want to be Ranked? Coming into the 2016 season most expected Class 3A to be weaker than last year. Yes, expectations are sky high at Belfry while Corbin returned nearly all of its high powered offense. Several teams, though, suffered heavy graduation losses and there were questions surrounding established class powers like Lexington Catholic, Boyle County, Central, Caldwell County, Elizabethtown, Russell, and Paducah Tilghman, among others. What the first three weeks of the season has shown us is that most everyone is struggling to bridge the gap... Read More →

Class 4A Notebook (8/29): The Script Flips

By DragonFire - What a difference a week makes. After the top ten from our opening week only had three of nine teams in action win, this week, nine of the ten came out on the winning side of the column. The one exception, was John Hardin, which suffered a head scratching loss to North Hardin. It was just the second time the Trojans have knocked off John Hardin in the last decade, and it came despite being outgained 368-248. Five turnovers were to blame, as well as penalties that wiped out two first quarter touchdowns. The Bulldogs have played a brutal schedule early on in the last few years, and have... Read More →
