Baker, Tomcats turn the lights out on Russell

By DevilMayCare - The Russell Red Devils were riding high entering Friday nights match-up against the Ashland Tomcats. And why shouldn't they be? Russell was coming off a hard fought(and rare) win last week over a traditional power from Ohio. Russell also drew confidence from having defeated Ashland last year at Putnam Stadium and many of those Devils returned this year. Unfortunately for Russell, Ashland also had some familiar names back from last year. Specifically Quinton Baker "The Touchdown Maker". The Marshall commit rushed for 146yds, gashing the Russell defense on TD runs of 34, 2, & 67 yards. He... Read More →

1A Noteboook Week 3 - Who are the contenders?

By Voice of Reason - As we enter week 4 of the season, we have seen our ranked teams face some challenges. Some fell a little short. Some remain undefeated. It may be a little early because a lot can still change but we are starting to get an idea of who the contenders are for this year's 1A title. Top ranked Beechwood entered the season as the consensus favorite but there were question marks. Replacing your lines on both sides of the ball is no easy task. The Tigers have clearly shown in their first two games that the program knows how to fill in the gaps. With easy wins over two ranked 2A opponents Beechwood... Read More →

Class 4A Football Notebook (9/8): The Status Quo

By DragonFire - OK, maybe the status quo is a little bit strong as there was some ranking movement, but for the second straight week the top 5 teams are the same, each team having taken care of their business advancing unscathed. 9 of the top 10 teams remained the same, as only North Oldham dropped out after a frankly stunning 38-0 whitewashing by Elizabethtown, the #8 team in 3A. The Mustangs managed only 14 passing yards and 163 total yards offensively against Elizabethtown. It was a stunning reversal as the predictions had been heavily on the side of North Oldham, state semifinalists last year. ... Read More →

2A Notebook- The Pecking Order Is Starting

By ATLCat - As mentioned in "What To Watch" last week, this past weekend was a slate chock full of tough challenges for the Top 15 teams in Class 2A with numerous teams either stepping up in class or taking on highly ranked foes. The aftermath featured numerous teams in the Top 10 taking an "L" but other teams validating their worth. So what did this weekend tell us? The Cream Rises Ever since realignment was announced most felt that a collision course of cosmic proportions was put in place and that Mayfield and DeSales would be the teams everyone would be chasing. With teams ranked 3-6 falling to... Read More →

Class 5A Notebook (9-7): The Sky is Falling, the Sky is Falling

By Ram - The sky is falling, the sky is falling, the sky is falling. Pre-season number one, and perieneral power, Highlands is 1-2 beating a winless team to get in the winners column. District foe, Covington Catholic is 0-3 and will likely be below .500 on the season. While Bowling Green, recently holding the longest current winning streak in the state and winning multiple State Championships, lost again. Add to those teams, the defending Class 5A State Champion - Pulaski County losing to Scott County. Who is going to be the number one team in this class? Is there going to be a definite number... Bluegrasspreps' Football Rankings (9-7-15)

By Ram - Week 3 is in the books. In Class 1A, it's just a shuffle here, a shuffle there. Beechwood remains atop the rankings, while most every team below them either moves up one or down one. Paintsville bumps out Pikeville for #2 . Russellville keeps the #3 spot and Raceland remains at #4 . Campbellsville trades with Fairview for #6 . Paris, Hazard and Bethlehem stay at #8 , #9 and #1 0 . Class 2A sees the top 3 remain the same with Mayfield #1 , DeSales #2 and Christian Academy-Louisville at #3 . Owensboro Catholic moves up to #4 , bumping Murray to #5 . Danville and Newport Central Catholic... Read More →

6A Notebook - What do we know about 6A at this point?

By CoachBuckett - If we look at the season as quarters of a football game then we just completed the first quarter. Typically in the first quarter coaches use a few series to feel out the other team and to see how they adjust to things. So the feeling out over and what adjustments will be made by these teams for the second quarter? What questions do the top teams have at this point of the season? Trinity is sitting at 3-0 at the end of the first quarter with three dominating performances. Quarterback Jacob Woosley has settled in and leading the team completing just over 55% of his passes. The offense is... Read More →

Louisville Area Power Rankings for 9-7-15

By Bert - 1) Trinity High School (3-0, defeated Lexington Lafayette 70-14) Some felt Lafayette would give Trinity a decent game, Trinity put that thought away pretty quickly. Next weeks game will be billed as the game of the season state wide and Trinity takes on Male at Male. 2) Male High School (3-0, defeated Fairdale 64-6) Males continues to show its case for being number one over Trinity. Will wait till next weeks game to finally answer that question. 3) St. Xavier High School (2-0, defeated Bowling Green 45-19) X finally shakes the Purple monkey off its back and gets a convincing... Western Kentucky Power Ranking - 09/06/15

By Purple88 - BluegrassPreps 2015 Western Kentucky Power Rankings Week 2 Edition - 09/06/15 Concerning the top story line for this week, Ive decided to recognize a well-known BGPer, who absolutely loved Prep football in the Western part of the state and lost his lengthy health battle in this past off-season (March 2015). However, I dont want to slight Mr. Jayvon Quarles in doing so. Mr. Quarles was a recent respected player for his beloved Hopkinsville Tigers and the Players of the Week will now be known as the Jayvon Quarles Players of the Week. The game of the week will now be known as the... Read More →

Class 3A Football Wins, Losses, and Omens? (9/6)

By gchs_uk9 - Title Town Smack Down Boyle County cemented their place at the top of Class 3A with a 42-20 victory across town at Danville. The Admirals, coming off big wins over Larue County and Rockcastle County, were ranked #6 in Class 2A this week and were being hyped as a potential threat to knock off the Rebels. But Danville fell behind early and the game eventually saw a running clock before the Ads could push across two late scores. Boyle County (3-0) did most of their damage through the air, throwing for 414 yards and four touchdowns. The Rebel defense was their typical stout self on the... Read More →

Russell notches first win over Ironton since 1977

By DevilMayCare - Bell bottoms, Disco, Star Wars, the Son of Sam..... Ahh the memories. Actually, between you and me, I wasn't even born yet. The year was 1977. Russell's Ivan McGlone and Ironton's Bob Lutz were still young(ish) men, in the early stages of building great programs. The final score that year was 23-14 in favor of the Red Devils. It would be the last time Russell would defeat its cross river rival for 38 years. After '77, Ironton would win the next eleven in a row before the series went on hiatus beginning in 1993. The two schools renewed the series in 2009 with Ironton winning six in a... Read More →

Eastern Kentucky Power Rankings 9-6-15

By ATLCat - 10. Raceland (1A, 2-1)- Storms forced the Rams to play Saturday but there was no slwoing down the raining of points against East Carter. Greenup County has been a pleasant surprise and should be a better test. 9. Russell (3A, 2-0)- The statement win of the week? Russell going to Ironton, OH and stealing one from the Mighty Tigers on Saturday night. The historic win came at a cost as the Devils are banged up entering a huge matchup this week. 8. Pikeville (1A, 2-1)- The next two teams flip flop as last week's GOTW lived up to the hype in an Overtime thriller. Pikeville learned the value... Read More →

By Bluegrasscard - The Rankings 10) Garrard County (3A / 2 – 1) The Golden Lions post another win over Lincoln County 36 to 29. This #10 spot was between the Golden Lions and the Lexington Catholic Knights – who are in the same district with Boyle County and Western Hills. The nod went to Golden Lions with the better record. A 1-1 4A Rockcastle County team is next for Garrard County with East Jessamine following. 9) Danville (2A / 2 – 1) The Admirals lost to Boyle County this week in the big rivalry game. They still put up 20 points on the very defensive oriented Rebels – one more than... Read More →
