Class 4A Notebook (11/13): Winding Roads To Get There, Finals We (Mostly) Expected

By DragonFire - It’s worth noting that the top six teams in the final 4A poll are still standing….. Region 1 Reset Well, they took an odd path to get here, but the region finals that most expected coming into the year is what we ended up with – Hopkinsville against Franklin-Simpson. Franklin has been straight forward in their approach, notching their seventh consecutive victory in a 62-6 battering of Madisonville-North Hopkins, and running their record to 9-3. The Wildcats haven’t allowed more than 14 points since a 35-19 win at Glasgow, and they have scored 43 points or more in their last five... Read More →

High School Football in Kentucky - Playoff Structure

By ThrowItDeep - Thought I would throw my two cents in on the playoff structure.... This isn't a shot at KHSAA by any means. I consider Julian a good friend and he wants the best interest of football in our state. I really believe that. Not saying their hands are tied, but in a way they are... I coached for 12 years as head coach at Edmonson County from 2004-2015. I'm just an AD now, but I still want high school football in our state to be the best it can be. Traditionally, our school hasn't had tremendous success in the playoffs. Before the move to six classes, our school had only won 6 playoff wins... Read More →

3A Notebook: Powell County Erases Chalk in Victory over Casey County

By gchs_uk9 - Powell County to Make Second Appearance in Regional Final Chalk is a gambling term which refers to the favored team or horse. If you bet on the favorite, you are betting the chalk. It stems from the days when your neighborhood bookie would write all the betting lines on a chalkboard. Eight second round Class 3A playoff games were played on Friday night and in seven the team ranked highest by Bluegrasspreps won. The eighth game was a surprise. Because of that shock, the Powell County Pirates will host Corbin in the regional final next week. Powell County, losers of their first four... Read More → 10th Region Boys Basketball Preview

By mcpapa - 10th REGION OVERVIEW Hoops season is right around the corner. The 2017-2018 season - and regional tournament - will have to go some to match the last couple of campaigns. 2015-16 saw Mason County make an improbable run in the tourney with three come-from-behind wins, and last year had a district runner-up come within an eyelash of taking down the eventual state champs in the final four of the Sweet Sixteen. This time around, the Cardinals of George Rogers Clark look to be the preemptive favorite, returning virtually every significant contributor from a season ago - and adding a couple... By Smallhoops - 7th Region Boys Basketball Preview The Ballard Bruins were the Kings of the Seventh Region last year, finishing 29-7 for the year (16-0 in the Seventh Region) and advancing to the quarterfinals of the state tournament where they fell to Fern Creek 55-52. If recent history repeats itself, Ballard winning the region last year means Trinity will win it this year. And Trinity, with perhaps the three best returning players in the region, appears ready to do just that. But Ballard might have something to say about that, as it did last year when the Bruins beat Trinity... Read More →

Scott County Quarterback Josh Davis - Beyond Impressive

By Quiet_Storm11 - Scott County's Quarterback Josh Davis could not be a more perfect fit to balance out their high powered running attack. As a 3 year starter, he is 31-6 (31-2 against KY foes), has a 65% completion rating, throwing for 3625 yards and 45TDs, with only 6 INTs. He has 17 career rushing touchdowns as well. His senior year has been the most impressive, as Josh has lead the Cardinals to a 9-2 record through the 1st round of the playoffs, completing 74% percent of his passes for 1174 yards, 16 TDs, 2 INTs, with 2 rushing touchdowns as well. Under his command the Scott County offense has averaged 45... Read More → 8th Region Boys Basketball Preview

By ColonelMike - 2017-18 8th Region Boys Preview By: Colonelmike & 8th Region Warrior If there’s one thing we should have learned by now about the 8th Region boys basketball tournament, it’s this advice, borrowed from perhaps, from a horse racing handicapper: Don’t bet the favorite. For the last five years, the mantle of “favorite” has been a curse to the team wearing it… Last year, Oldham County entered the tournament as the prohibitive favorite – and promptly lost in the first round to eventual champ Collins. Two years ago, Owen County was the overwhelming choice – and they also lost in the first... Read More →

Playoff Preview: 6A Round Two

By thsrocks - #11 Central Hardin (8-3) vs. Henderson County (5-6) Central Hardin has won 4 in a row and 6 of their past 7 games. Henderson County comes into this round two contest with 4 wins in their past 6 games. Each team suffered one shutout loss in 2017. The Bruins fell 15-0 to @A #5 Christian Academy of Louisville on September 1. The Colonels dropped the opening game of the season 41-0 to Reitz (IN). Henderson County scored the same number of points as they have allowed, 269. Central Hardin has scored 308 points while giving up 170. My prediction for this slugfest is Central Hardin 21-Henderson... Read More → 3rd Region Boys Basketball Preview

By ApolloFan98 - The 2017/2018 3rd region basketball season is setting up to be a fun one. While it appears that Catholic and Daviess County are the slight favorites on paper, it’s not by much. It will be interesting to see which teams outside of Owensboro emerge to compete for the title. Overall, it feels like this region is wide open to at least 7-8 different teams. 1.Owensboro Catholic Aces (22-11) - One year removed from their first trip to Rupp, the Aces look primed to make another push for a 3rd region title. Coach Tim Riley will return most everyone from a squad that won over twenty games last year... Read More →

Class 4A Notebook (11/6): Not As Chalky As You'd Think

By DragonFire - Cards on the table, I've often joined in the argument that we have too many teams making the playoffs. I fall more into the "we have too many classes" category rather than "we should take the top two seeds", but the amount of teams that make it and get pulped is rather crazy. However, 4A had a surprising amount of "upsets" by seeds that continued a recent trend. All of those upsets came in the 2/3 games, as they almost always do. Since the institution of the six class system, 1 seeds are 85-1 in the first round of 4A play. The lone loss was in 2010, when West Jessamine knocked off... By Les - 13th Region Boys Basketball Preview 1. Corbin Redhounds The Redhounds looked solid during the summer’s Laurel County Hoop Fest, and dominated their opponents during tournament play. Corbin won by double figures against Clay County, South Laurel, and defending 13th Region champion Harlan County, making them my clear-cut 13th region favorite entering the 2017-18 campaign. The Redhounds possess the best player in the region in Andrew Taylor, and he could very well be the best player in the state. Taylor can hurt you from anywhere on the floor, along with his teammates.... Read More →

3A Notebook: Garrard Scores Early, Holds on Late to Best Top-Seeded Fleming

By gchs_uk9 - Garrard County Proves Not All Four Seeds Created Equal Rarely does a four seed win in the KHSAA football playoffs. Between six classes and small districts, the gap between ones and fours is typically quite wide, making for an opening round long on running clocks and short on drama. That wasn't the case in Flemingsburg on Friday night as fourth seeded Garrard County scored early and held on late to beat first seeded Fleming County 20-14, becoming one of only two four seeds to win a first round game (Butler defeated Ryle in 6A). Playing in dry conditions but on a muddy field, Garrard... Read More →

By Sportslover32 - Basketball season is almost here. The Cardinals of Taylor County won their 3rd straight region title last year. This year, my top 4 teams was the last 4 standing last year. Those teams are John Hardin, Taylor County, Adair County and Larue County. The region has some great individual talent this year, and it should be an exciting season. Preseason 5th Region Rankings 1. John Hardin (23-11): The Bulldogs look to be the favorite in the 5th region this year. They had a good year last year, but this year expectations are even higher. They return a great player in Mickey Pearson, a Saint... Read More →
