3A Notebook: Hot Start in District 8

By gchs_uk9 - District 8 Trio Are Each 3-0 After three weeks of Kentucky High School football there are nine undefeated teams in Class 3A. One-third of those reside in District 8. Bell County, Casey County, and Corbin have all started the 2018 campaign hot, winning by a combined average score of 41-12. Was this expected? Yes and no. All three teams advanced to at least the second round of the playoffs in 2017. But as with nearly all high school football teams, there were questions entering this season. Corbin Third-ranked Corbin defeated Pulaski County, 47-20, on Friday night to pick up their... Read More →

1A Notebook 8/29 - Contenders?

By Voice of Reason - The consensus in class 1A early from the preseason and up to last Friday was this class was all about the Beechwood Tigers. The two time defending champions are loaded and senior dominated this year. That led a clear majority, perhaps more, to think the 2018 regular season and playoffs are more a formality than a contest. That outlook changed with last week's games. The top teams immediately behind the Tigers in the rankings had performances that caused people to think twice about this 1A race. Let's take a look at last week and see who made a case for being a threat to the Tigers. Last... Read More →

Northern Kentucky Power Rankings: 08-29-18

By Colonels_Wear_Blue - 1) 5A Covington Catholic (2-0) – The Colonels are 2-0, and extended their streak of running clock victories in Kentucky to fourteen with a 41-0 win on Friday over 6A Henry Clay (1-1). After Michael Mayer’s Week 0 defensive performance, we got to see what makes him a D1 tight end, with his team leading 79yds and 2 TDs on 6 pass receptions. QB Caleb Jacob finished the game with 10 completions on 13 attempts, good for 167yds passing and 3 TDs, and RB Casey McGinness was good for 136yds on the ground, with 1 TD. The Cov Cath defense allowed only 67 total yards of offense for the Blue Devils, who... Read More →

Class 4A Notebook (8/29): Mulligans

By DragonFire - The 4A rankings this week were exactly the same as a week ago despite four losses by top ten teams. The reason for that was a disparity between the level of competition faced by the teams that fell - each playing a team in the top 2 of their respective class in their respective state - and that faced by virtually every other team that won, most of which were beaten before setting foot on the field. For the teams that lost, it's the equivalent of a mulligan in golf. They get a re-do at this rank, but this week, they likely wouldn't be so lucky. With Johnson Central taking the first week... BluegrassPreps Central Kentucky Power Rankings 8-29 Week 2

By PurplePride92 - Nothing has changed at the top of this week’s Central Kentucky Power Rankings as the top 5 teams all won convincingly to make things at the top easy to figure out. The bottom 5 teams is where the water gets murky and it is becoming increasingly difficult trying to figure out how they all stack up. Needless to say there have been some insane individual performances to start the season and last week had a couple of eye opening performances from some of the studs of Central Kentucky. Let’s jump in and take a look and see what happened in Central Kentucky last week. Top Ten: 1. Scott... Read More →

6A Notebook: Deja Vu

By Bac2369 - Deja Vu Week 1 brought another exciting weekend of high school football in the Bluegrass State. While thrilling for several teams, it proved heartbreaking for others. For some, this would be their second game of the season, while for others it was their first after having a scrimmage the week before. 1. The Trinity Shamrocks had high hopes of a big win in their home opener against Warren Central (IN) on national television. Trinity would come out on fire and take an early 21-0 lead on big plays by Ryan Miller and Gereimah Smith from Seth Jutz. (Stanford Commit) Stephen Herron blocked a... Read More →

BluegrassPreps Rankings (8/27)

By Ram - Class 1A It was a statement weekend for Beechwood and Pikeville, as they hosted ranked competition from Class 2A. The Tigers wore down Lloyd and eventually extended their lead to a running clock, while Pikeville settled for the full frontal assault, exploding on Lexington Christian before the first half ended. Beechwood will now try to take down another 2A team with a slightly higher number by their name. Paintsville has rolled in their two games, but the competition has left a lot to be desired. They take a serious step up against an impressive Frederick Douglass team. 1. Beechwood vs.... Read More →

Western Kentucky Power Rankings - August 27, 2018

By Purple88 - BluegrassPreps 2018 Western Kentucky Power Rankings – Week 2 Edition (Disclaimer 1: Sorry this is a bit late; I had to cook for 125 people yesterday afternoon and it threw my whole weekend off. Although I did go to a game on Friday night of course!) What a great weather weekend to get out and see a game! I hope you got to see a game this past Friday or Saturday night! The top story line this week is degree of difficulty! Different teams look at degree of difficulty in different ways and it shows in their scheduling. Some teams schedule very difficult out of district games and... Read More →

Louisville Area Power Rankings 8/27

By TheDeuce - 1. 6A Male (2-0) The Bulldogs continued their early season dominance with a 47-0 rout of 6A Ballard. QB Garrett Dennis lead the way going 16/19 for 246 yards and four TD's. Male will likely continue their impressive start as they host 5A Doss this Friday. 2. 6A Trinity (0-2) For the second week in a row, Trinity found itself with a late lead against a tough out-of-state opponent. And for the second week in a row, they found themselves on the losing end of an exciting 42-41 battle with Warren Central (IN). Injuries to three senior contributors, RB Geremiah Smith, RB Luke McGuire, and S... Read More →

5A Notebook (8/25): Getting Defensive

By DevilMayCare - Another week, another slate of mostly chalky results. Through two weeks, 5A has managed to avoid a dramatic shake-up at the top. CovCath, BG, South Warren, South Oldham, and Highlands all won their Week 1 games by an average score of 40-8. That's the sort of domination you want to see from your top teams. Top ranked Covington Catholic continued its reign of terror, jumping on Henry Clay early, and never looking back. The 41-0 beatdown was a textbook display of efficiency and killer instinct. With the promising potential of quarterback Caleb Jacob, weapons like McGinness, Mayer, and Coldiron,... Read More →

Class 2A Notebook 8/26- Is the Fog Clearing for District 7 Already?

By ATLCat - District 7 Teams Providing Insight Danville's opening week win over 6A Woodford County, a team in the midst of one of the State's longest losing streaks, did not really give us much insight. Neither did subsequent Week 1 wins by Somerset and LCA over Lincoln County and Waggener, another pair of teams not noted for long playoff runs. With a ton of roster turnover among the three teams, we needed Week 2 to finally start to give a glimpse of what we can expect as all three teams faced ranked opponents that have been to the State Finals in the not so distant past. DANVILLE- The Admirals... Read More →

3A Notebook: Corbin Showing No Signs of Falling Off

By gchs_uk9 - Redhounds' Estep Filling in Nicely for Departed Sizemore The biggest concern heading into 2018 for the Corbin Redhounds was the quarterback position. Gone was three year starter Cameron Sizemore who had posted 6,760 passing yards, 1,501 rushing yards, and accounted for 112 total touchdowns in his career. Replacing him would be Chase Estep. Estep, an outstanding baseball pitcher, previously started at running back and had amassed 710 rushing yards and eight touchdowns in leading Corbin to the Class 3A state championship game in 2017. But how would he handle playing quarterback? If two... Read More →
