2016-17 2nd Region Preview

By WKY - This will be the second year in a row that Henderson County enters the season as an underdog. The question is will they play spoiler again? One could argue that the region belongs to them until someone dethrones them. However it is hard to argue with this season's favorite since they have proved they have what it takes to make the region finals, nearly walking away with the championship last season. Preseason Team Rankings Rank Team (Last Season Overall Record; Last Season Region Record; Postseason Finish) 1. Webster County (22-10; 11-6; Region Runner-Up) The Lady Trojans lose only... 3A Notebook: Belfry and Central to go yet Another Round

By gchs_uk9 - You'll not go broke picking Belfry and Central to advance deep in the postseason every year. Come Saturday, Belfry will play in their ninth state championship game in the last fourteen years, looking to win a sixth title and fourth in a row. Central, meanwhile, will be making their seventh appearance in the last ten years, and will look to add a sixth crown to the trophy case. To say these clubs are experienced is an understatement. It wasn't always this easy. For years, Belfry was the bridesmaid, losing championship games in 1979, 1985, and 1986. Even after winning legendary coach... Read More →

2016-17 2nd Region Preview

By The Scribe - Second Region Preview Stop me if you have heard this before, but the road to the Second Region basketball title runs through the Eighth District. Hopkinsville, University Heights, and defending champion Christian County are all ranked in the top 20 statewide, with only two of them able to advance to the region tourney and keep alive a streak that has seen an Eighth District school win every region title since 2001. Christian County has won seven region titles, Hopkinsville has won five, and UHA three region titles since Madisonville won the 2001 title. Despite losing the... Read More →

Class 5A Notebook (11/23/16) And Then There Were Four

By JDEaston - Last week provided a lot of excitement leading up to this week’s State Semifinals. With two of last week’s games being decided by a total of 10 points, as well as a couple of upsets, one thing we have learned this season is that team’s 2-10 are all pretty even. Bowling Green, Fern Creek, South Oldham and Pulaski County have all advanced to the State Semifinals and will fight it out this week for a chance to play in the State Championship game in Bowling Green. Region 1 Championship Owensboro looked to keep this one within a touchdown at the half until the Purples took the wind out of... Read More →

2016-17 4th Region Season Preview

By DragonFire - The 2016-17 season is upon us, coming off the 15th year of the 14th District Era of dominance, and the 3rd year of the Purple dynasty. Bowling Green had a few challenges as the year rolled along, and Barren County gave them a go, but ultimately, the Purples whitewashed the region en route to an 18-0 region slate – part of 30 consecutive region wins – and their third straight region title. The only thing that didn’t go their way was the state tournament draw, which squared them off with eventual champion Dunbar in the quarterfinals. Though the Purples led into the third quarter, they... Read More →

2016-17 7th Region Season Preview

By PurplePride92 - The more things change the more they stay the same in the 7th Region and once again head coach Mike Szabo has a very talented Trinity team this season. Trinity will not only be one of the top teams in the 7th Region but they will be one of the top teams in the state. Ballard and head coach Chris Renner are also looking to be one of the top teams in the 7th Region as Trinity and Ballard have dominated this region for the past several years. Doug Bibby is looking to bring Central back to the limelight and at the top of the 7th Region and St. Xavier and head coach Kevin Klein would love another... Read More →

Class 2A Notebook 11/23- Vengeance is Sweet

By ATLCat - We are now down to the Final 4, The Semi-Finals, The Fearsome Foursome, The Four Horsemen... but before we could get there an exciting week of Regional Finals first set the stage and in three of the Finals the driving factor was "REVENGE". (Insert Evil Laugh) Region I Championship: Mayfield 28 Owensboro Catholic 6 There was no revenge here, the Defending Champs battled a game Catholic squad to a 14-6 Halftime advantage in a hard hitting game that seemed to be hanging in the balance. As we have seen many times before, it was Coach Joe Morris' Halftime adjustments on Defense that set the... Read More →

1A Notebook State Semifinals - Power and Speed

By Voice of Reason - The number of games are shrinking as teams are eliminated and we head to the title game. The semifinal matchups are excellent. Let's look at how our final four won their games last week and how the matchups look in the semifinal games. Region 1 Championship Russellville has been the prohibitive favorite to win region 1 since the first snap of the season and they did what everyone expected. The Panthers used their single wing rushing game and speed to roll over Bethlehem 48-12. Russellville rushed for 578 yards in the game. Leading the way was explosive RB Johnny Drumgole running for 194... Read More →

Finding something positive.... at Notre Dame

By ChiefSmoke - In the fall of 2011, our Mason County Royals finished the season at 2-8, on October 21st. Forget about Thanksgiving Day practice... we didn't even make it to Halloween. It was depressing. John Combs had just completed his freshman season of HS football. We had been spoiled by winning, and so this was tough to take. We decided that we needed to make it a positive. What was something that normally we did not do, that now we could do, because we had plenty of time on our hands? I kept telling myself (hoping).... 'In the future, we will be busy in November. Now is the time to do something... Read More →

2016-17 9th Region Season Preview

By Walter - With basketball season less than a week away, it's time to dive in to the 9th region and see which teams will compete for the region and state championship as well as take a look at the top players that will either emerge or continue to make a name for themselves with last year's seniors departing. If you didn't notice, yes...9th region and state championship were mentioned in the same sentence. What was once considered a long shot, has now become a serious reality on a yearly basis with the past three region champions winning a state championship (Covcath- 2014.... #salute ) and... 2016-17 15th Region Season Preview

By 15th Region - 15th Region Overview (Loaded 57th District Creates Top Heavy Region): The Champion of the 15th Region will in all likelihood come from the 57th District this season as Johnson Central, Magoffin County, and Sheldon Clark all have solid ball clubs with multiple POY candidates. After those 3 there is a gap, but teams that can make noise include East Ridge, Pikeville, and Shelby Valley. Great coaching is one way you can close the gap as the season goes on and the 15th Region has plenty of those as well. Look for those in the middle of the pack to improve steadily over the course of the... Read More →

2016-17 10th Region Season Preview

By Randy Parker - 10TH REGION: OVERVIEW Buddy Biggs returned to the 10th Region in 2015-16 and eventually made a huge splash, as he led the Mason County Royals back to the mountain top of the 10th Region. The Royals used a last second shot in the Region Quarterfinals, then mounted a furious comeback in the Semifinals, and avenged a District Tournament loss in the Finals, earning the right to play in Rupp. You can likely expect Mason County to be in the hunt for another championship, but even more so, you can be sure 2016-17 will have as much balance as last year. Aric Russell's Campbell... Read More →

2016-17 5th Region Season Preview

By PurplePride92 - For the past two seasons Taylor County has ruled the 5th Region as Taylor County won the 5th Region tournament the last two seasons and in 2016 Taylor County advanced to the quarterfinals of the Sweet Sixteen where they fell to eventual Sweet Sixteen runner-up, Doss. This season brings a fresh start for the entire region as Quentin Goodin has graduated and David Sloan and Coach Gatewood have left Taylor County for new homes this season. North Hardin and Bardstown look to make the trip to Rupp Arena this year but it won't be easy as Adair County and John Hardin both have the goals,... Read More →
