Bluegrasspreps' Eastern Kentucky Power Rankings 10-9

By ATLCat - 1. Johnson Central Golden Eagles (4A, 7-0)- Greenup was no issue for Matney's bunch who seem to look better and better each week. With lowly Rowan County next expect JC to heal some wounds. 2. Belfry Pirates (3A, 6-1)- Speaking of teams healing up, Belfry did just that against Lawrence County but still rolled with ease. The Pirates host a foe from outside Cleveland and may get their legs stretched a bit this week. 3. Corbin Redhounds (3A, 6-1)- Corbin took the week off and now gear up for Bell County. In the past few years this would be "Must See" football, but instead a running clock... Read More →

3A Notebook: Breaking Down the District Races

By gchs_uk9 - This week's Notebook is being written in Pensacola, Florida on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. Beach time is always good for contemplation and so this week seems like a good time to contemplate the district races in Class 3A. For each district, we will designate a favorite, a threat, and a surprise (a team capable of winning a first round road playoff game). District 1 Favorite: Caldwell County (5-3) After a slow start that saw the Tigers lose three straight, Coach David Barnes' team has rattled off five consecutive wins, three of those against district opponents. Once again the... Read More →

Class 5A Notebook (10/5/16) Game of the season!

By JDEaston - Outside of one game, everything pretty much went as scripted last week in class 5A. But man, what a game it was. The Owensboro Red Devils traveled to Christian County to take on the #3 ranked Colonels in what ended in a double overtime win in favor of the Red Devils. Owensboro has spent the majority of this season ranked in the top 5. It wasn’t until a loss to Owensboro Catholic that some began to wonder if the Red Devils were for real or just a solid 5A team. Then came Bowling Green the following week, we all knew how that would turn out. But the final score still left some people wondering,... Read More →

Trinity (7-0) – Trinity entered their game against X as the favorite but not a heavy favorite. The left the game making people reconsider. Their 35-13 beating of St.X was quite impressive and further cements them as the #1 team. Next week’s game against Eastern should be ugly. The following week versus Seneca will be worse. Class 4A Notebook (10/4): Resurgent Rockets

By DragonFire - In 2000, Rockcastle County won their first region championship. After years upon years of running headlong into dominant programs from Bell County, to Danville, to Boyle County, the light finally shined on Rockcastle County and they broke through with a 7-6 win over Sheldon Clark. They were summarily dismissed by a machine in Highlands, but the Rockets followed that up with arguably the finest teams in the program’s history, running to 14-1 and 13-2 records in 2001 & 2002, but having the misfortune to (once again) running into Boyle County both years, who swatted away their dreams of a... Game of the week was Pikeville versus Hazard and that outcome was true to our rankings with Pikeville winning a hard fought battle beind an outstanding performance by their QB Wyatt Battaille. The only other game to note was outside the top 10 with Bracken County coming from behind to beat Paris 43-41. We are into district time so let's take a look at the 1A districts across the state. District 1 – Crittenden County, Fulton City, Fulton County, Russellville This district features current... Read More →

Bluegrasspreps' Football Rankings (10/3)

By Ram - Class 1A All eyes were on Pikeville where District 8 was set to be determined in a match-up between Pikeville and Hazard. The Panthers earned a hard fought victory and all but assured themselves the advantage of home field throughout the playoffs. Three huge showdowns highlight this week’s action as Paintsville takes on Fairview and undefeated Nicholas County must try to fend off Paris. Another game to keep an eye on over in the Western Semi-State will be a huge District clash featuring Louisville Holy Cross and Kentucky Country Day, a pair of Top 10 teams. 1. BluegrassPreps - Western Kentucky Power Ranking - 10/2/16

By Purple88 - BluegrassPreps 2016 Western Kentucky Power Rankings – Week 6 Edition Concerning the top story line for this week, Fall and Fall Breaks have arrived and for many of the top teams, the BYE week is upon us. Rest and recuperation are the most prescribed mandates for most teams and yourself. I went to the lake this weekend and it was a BLAST! I encourage you and yours to do the same and enjoy our great outdoors! While players are headed to the couch, what about the coaching staffs? I would say the better coaching staffs take this time to relax a bit, but carry around film on the best... Read More →

3A Notebook: Russell Continues Lock Down of Competition

By gchs_uk9 - Red Devil Defense Dominates Fleming County For the sixth consecutive game, Russell held their opponent under double digits. Russell went to Fleming County on Friday night and slowed down the high flying Panthers, allowing only a late touchdown on a fumble recovery in a 30-7 victory. Fleming County (4-2) entered the game averaging 41.2 points per game, much of it from quarterback Josh Crump who had passed for 1,212 yards and 16 touchdowns before Friday night. Russell coach T.J. Maynard told the Ashland Daily Independent “We knew coming in the Crump kid is a good football player; he... Read More →

Bluegrasspreps' Eastern Kentucky Power Rankings 10-2

By ATLCat - 1. Johnson Central Golden Eagles (4A, 6-0)- The Golden Eagles are red hot and inch into the #1 spot by way of comparative analysis. Their undefeated record and a dominating win over possibly the #1 overall team in West Virginia puts them at the top by the narrowest of margins. 2. Belfry Pirates (3A, 5-1)- The Pirates avenged their only loss from 2015 but still showed signs of playing at less than a peak performance. Belfry has a three week stretch to work out the kinks before the battle for #1 in Week 10. 3. Corbin Redhounds (3A, 6-1)- Corbin now directs their focus to winning another... Read More →

1A Notebook 9/27 - Who had the best Pre-District?

By Voice of Reason - The district battles are getting started. A few teams still are playing pre-district games but this will be the last week of out of district games for most teams. This seems like a good time to look at the pre-district successes, and losses, of our ranked teams. There is always a discussion about the out of district schedules teams have. Some teams will play a very difficult out of district schedule to prepare their team and to find their team's strengths and weaknesses against really tough competition. Some teams shape the out of district schedule with a mix of tough and less challenging... Read More →

Class 5A Notebook (9/28/2016)

By JDEaston - While there were no top ten matchups in class 5A’s week 5, along with no movement in this week’s top ten, there were some games and scores to take note of. Let’s take a look at the Pulaski County vs. Madison Southern game first. Pulaski County has been working their way back up in the rankings after their early season blowout loss to 6A Scott County. Madison Southern on the other hand has been hanging around just outside of the BGP Top Ten for several weeks now, looking for a way in. The 205 yards passing from Matt Hendricks, along with a balanced rushing attack was enough for the Maroons to... Read More →
