Class 4A Notebook (9/13): 4A Rights the Ship

By DragonFire - After the bloodletting that was the third week in 4A football, it was nice to see the script flip last week for the top of our rankings. Whereas a mere three of the top ten teams won the week before, this past week seven of the top ten teams won, and at least the other three losses were to ranked opponents. Johnson Central has continued to look a little more vulnerable than expected, as for the third straight game they allowed 20+ points to their opponent. That has now surpassed the total games the defense allowed that all of last season. But despite the relatively close scoreline,... Read More →

Louisville Power Rankings 9-13-17

By Bert - 1. Trinity (4-0) – Trinity took on it first KY opponent in the Male Bulldogs. Trinity's Defense looked incredible as they shut out the Bulldogs but the Offense struggled in the red zone. This week's game is up in the air as Hurricane Irma may prevent Champagnat Catholic (FL) from making it to Louisville. 2. St. Xavier (3-0) – The Fairdale Bulldogs were not expected to be able to give X much competition and they didn't as the Tigers beat Fairdale 56-14. This week X will face a much better competitor in Louisville Central for this week's Game of the Week. 3. Male (3-1) – A loss... Read More →

Class 2A Notebook 9/11- Who Blinks First?

By ATLCat - The Firm Five Lexington Christian Academy was seemingly starting to slip a little in the eyes of some. The Eagles had not surrounded themselves with the toughest schedule of the Top 5 teams in Class 2A, and had a couple games where they seemingly allowed lesser competition to hang around before hammering the nail in the 2nd Half to pull away. Lexington Catholic was supposed to be the game that told us if LCA was going to keep pace with the front runners of the class. Lexington Christian Academy hushed the doubters in resounding fashion. The Eagles crushed the 3A Knights 56-36 and may have... Read More →

Western Kentucky Power Ranking - 9/10/17

By Purple88 - BluegrassPreps 2017 Western Kentucky Power Rankings – Week 3 Edition Concerning the top story line for this week, it is that time in the season where I admit I am pretty dog-gone long-winded on these rankings and I realize folks have very busy lives and don’t have time every week to get through all the items listed in this thread, so we’ll audible formations into a “Popcorn N Coke Version” and “Meat & Potato’s Version” so you can get what you want and move on in the time available to you. Popcorn N Coke Top 10 Version – Week 3: 1. Mayfield 2A (4-0): Win 49-27 vs 6A McCracken County... Read More →

2A Game of the Week: #5 Lexington Christian Academy vs. #8 Walton Verona

By DevilMayCare - In its brief existence (since 2008), Walton Verona's football program has grown steadily, taking the necessary small steps it takes to lay a strong foundation for long term success. Coach Jeff Barth is the man behind the Bearcats emergence in recent years. After John McMillen left following a respectable 4-6 inaugural season, Barth took over and has guided Walton Verona to a 63-35 record in his 8+ years at the helm. Included in that run is five seasons of at least eight wins. This year's squad looks like they're well on their way to surpassing that total. The Bearcats currently sit at... Read More →

Game of the Week: Battle of the Number Ones - Beechwood vs. Covington Catholic

By Bac2369 - If you thought the 1A Game of the Week last week was legendary, this week's game might knock your socks off. Beechwood is back for another #1 vs #1 matchup. This time it's between two Northern Kentucky powers in their own class. We have 1A #1 Beechwood vs. 5A #1 Covington Catholic. These teams are very familiar with one another as they usually play every season. Last year Beechwood struggled to move the ball on Covington Catholic and only put up ten points while CovCath dropped 44 on the Beechwood defense. Taking a look back at history, you only have to go to 2014 for the last Beechwood... Read More →

3A Notebook: Road Blues for Corbin, E'town, and LexCath

By gchs_uk9 - Corbin, Elizabethtown, Lexington Catholic Find Road a Tough Place to Win Looking at this week's Class 3A schedule it was apparent that the top six teams would all have their hands full. Three of the six faced challenging road matchups against highly ranked teams. None of the three came home victorious, in turn reshuffling the 3A deck and perhaps returning Belfry to the top of the rankings. Corbin made the 166 mile trek up I-75 to face Class 1A's top-ranked defending state champion Beechwood. The start was perfect for the Redhounds, who went eighty yards in two plays and led 7-0... 5A Notebook (9/7) Number two in question?

By JDEaston - Week two was a rough week for class 5A, with four of the top 10 teams taking losses, as well as nearly everyone in the 11-15 range dropping an L as well. Most of the top 10 losses were expected with Bowling Green, Highlands and Pulaski County all playing teams that were expected to win those games by most. One game that makes me scratch my head though was Fern Creek and Central. No doubt that Central is good and it was expected to be a close game regardless of who won, but the Tigers laid an egg losing 29-0 versus 3A #4 Central. Covington Catholic solidified why they have worked their way... Read More →
