After a sluggish 2 -4 start, the Breds won 9 straight, en route to the Class 2A state championship with a win over Caldwell County 30-26. Heading in to the 2013 season, Newcath will be looking for their third state championship in 4 years. They will have to do so, however, without former head coach Eddie Eviston, who accepted a position to coach at Georgetown College. Coach Carl Hayden has accepted a new position in the Fayette County school system and will not be at the helm in 2013. Assistant Eric Shaw was named as head coach in mid-summer. For three straight years dating back to 2010, the Belfry Pirates have went to the state championship game against Louisville Central and each year turned out to be the same result with Louisville Central coming out on top. Belfry seems to have a problem winning the big game as they have failed for three straight years.
