Somerset Briar Jumpers

By AverageJoesGym - 2013 is the season that the Somerset Briar Jumpers have been building towards for the past couple of seasons. Sure, the last two seasons saw Somerset win Regional Championships and advance to the State Semi-Finals but those were sophomore and junior dominated teams. Those players are now seniors and are looking to take things a step further and advance to Bowling Green. Head Coach Robbie Lucas is 47-10 in his 4 years at the helm for the Jumpers with 4 District Championships, 4 Region Championships and a State Runner-Up finish. The only thing that has eluded Lucas is the same thing that has... Read More →

Inside The Southeastern Six

By Les - The Southeastern Six is a weekly supplement that consists of Bell County, Corbin, Harlan County, Knox Central, Whitley County and Williamsburg. This should be an interesting season for the Southeastern Six, considering each school has a legit chance to make it deep in their respective classes’ post-season. So let’s break things down a little bit. Bell County Bobcats (11-3 in 2012) This will mark Wayne Mills’ third year as Bobcat coach and he’s compiled an impressive 21-5 record since taking over for Dudley Hilton, but with that said, fans on Log Mountain are awaiting Mills to take his... Allen County-Scottsville Patriots

By DragonFire - The last two years for Allen County-Scottsville have been challenging to say the least. From 2008-2010 the Patriots made three straight region title games, compiled a 33-6 record, all culminating in a run to the 2010 4A state championship game. The past two years have brought no playoff wins and lost more games in each individual year than they did combined in 2008-2010. The 2012 season was not without positives. The Patriots had a strong win against surging 3A South Warren. They battled 2A power Glasgow to the wire and gave another 2A power Monroe County all they wanted in a loss on the... Read More →

Corbin Redhounds

By Les - Corbin Redhounds Steve Jewell's Corbin Redhounds are coming off their first losing record (5-6) since 1995, and his young Redhounds are hoping to turn things around this season. It's not going to be easy, though. Corbin will have to find a replacement for leading rusher Matt Jewell, who led the team in rushing, and receiver Josh Jewell, who led the team in receiving. Corbin is hoping to make some noise in district play this season, and will have to find a way to upend both Wayne County and Bell County, who are looking to to field some top-notch teams on the grid. The Redhounds will... Read More →

Simon Kenton Pioneers

By Walter - Going back to the 2008 season, few teams have had more playoff success than the Simon Kenton Pioneers, led by head coach Jeff Marksberry. The Pioneers have been to 4 of the previous 5 region championship games and during that span, also made an appearance in the statechampionship game. Heading in to the 2013 season, the Pioneers look to continue that trend of deep playoff runs. “ Our kids have worked hard at buying in to the expectations that our coaching staff have set for them,” Said Coach Marksberry.” That taste of success back in 2008 (state championship runner up) has kind of lingered... Knox Central Panthers

By Les - Knox Central Panthers Former Mr. Football and current Knox Central Panther head coach Scott Russell has seen his Panthers grow as a team the past two seasons, but a district championship has still eluded his squad. He's hoping that will change this season thanks to a roster that is full of talented players once again. Knox Central got off to a school-best 8-0 start in 2012, but didn't capture the District 6 crown and also lost to Lexington Catholic in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs, something he hopes his team hasn't forgot and can build on this season. To do so,... Read More →

South Warren Spartans

By DragonFire - Entering their third year as a varsity program, South Warren has thus far met or exceeded every goal they have set for themselves. In 2011, their goal was to make the playoffs in their first season. Check. In 2012, their goal was to host a home playoff game. Not only did they meet that goal, they won that game for their first postseason victory and won a second to advance to the region finals, far exceeding expectations. And so they find themselves entering 2013 with loftier goals than ever. Their senior class began the South Warren football program, which fielded only JV/Freshman teams... Read More →

Gone is long time Boone County head coach Rick Thompson and in is new head coach Jeff Griffith. Griffith arrives in Florence after being an assistant for the past 12 years at Bowling Green, where he won back to back state championships the past two years and was a part of 30 consecutive...
