10 Notes From The 10th Region (Reviewing Week 2)

By Randy Parker - 10 Notes From The 10th Region (Reviewing Week 2) 1) You could spend a week researching the annals of 10th Region basketball & be hard-pressed to find a better back-to-back scoring performance than what Brent Bach of Augusta achieved in road contests with Pendleton County (Thursday) & Bourbon County (Saturday). The 6'0 junior poured in 45 points in his team's 102-89 loss to the Wildcats & very nearly matched that effort with 41 points in an 82-60 win over the Colonels. 2) The 45 points on Thursday night wasn't the only story out of Falmouth. Mason Monroe of Pendleton County... Read More →

Two days later, Bach lit up Bourbon County on their home floor for a whopping 41 points. In four games, Bach is averaging a sizzling 28.7 ppg. #2- Nick Jackson (Scott)- Scott's go-to-guy came through in two big games... Read More →

16th Region Notebook

By Tom Terrific - After a terrific start to the season it's time to start to glean some things now that teams have had an opportunity to display some of what you'll see this season in the 16th. These are just a few notes about what we think about the first official week of basketball in our corner of the Commonwealth. 1. Kyle Skaggs sets the Russell H.S. all time scoring mark. And it was no surprise, but he did it in consecutive 30point fashion. He has the Red Devils undefeated and looking like a serious contender to win the region. 2. Fleming County also has the feel of regional favorite with Burns... Read More →

14th Region Notes

By All State Baseball - 14th Region tipped-off this past week with a few good games while others were just complete blowouts. Player of the Week Estill County's Brandon Morris, Powell County's Trey Marcum, Dalton Cornett, Lee County's Tyler Evans. After going over everything, I have to say it goes to Estill County's Brandon Morris. Brandon had 22 pts, 15 Rebs, 5 asst plus several blocked shots in the Engineers win at Lee County. First time the Engineers have defeated the Bobcats on their home court since 2002. Injury Bug Read More →

10 Notes From The 10th Region (Reviewing Week 1)

By Randy Parker - 10 Notes From The 10th Region (Reviewing Week 1) 1) Happy Osborne's pre-season favorite and #9 ranked Montgomery County team started the season off in dominant fashion, going 3-0, including a 72-58 win over Tates Creek in the Mr. Basketball classic. Six Indians have notched double figures in scoring thus far, including a 28 points performance by junior guard Bryan Wallace vs. Tates Creek & Omar Prewitt's 27 points vs. Menifee County (to go along with 12 rebounds, 9 blocks, 7 steals & 5 assists). The aforementioned Wallace is also nabbing 6.3 steals per outing, while scoring 15.3... Read More →

13th Region Notes

By Les - The first week of 13th Region boys had a lot of action as the prep basketball season tipped off last week. I’m not going to waste anyone’s time, so let’s get to what some of you might have missed the past week. Player of the Week We have some good nominees this week with Middlesboro’s Austin Poindexter, Lynn Camp’s Zach Smith, Clay County’s Tyler McDaniel, Barbourville’s Alexander Phipps and Devon Mills and Corbin’s Zack Farley, but when it came down to it, you have to go with Farley. The senior guard from Corbin tallied 49 points in two games for the Redhounds this past week, which... Read More →

2012-2013 Kentucky High School Basketball Preview - 3rd Region Boys

By theguru - The 3rd region is top heavy this year, with Apollo leading the way, followed by Ohio County and Owensboro. There is a pretty big drop off to the fourth spot, and the rest fall in line from there. Depending on how well some teams mature, there could be some significant movement in the 3rd by season’s end. Preseason 3rd Region Rankings 1. Apollo - This team is deep, with a good mix of experienced and talented, young players. Lead by 6’5” forward Hunter Shelton, who led the Eagles in scoring last year with 14ppg and hit 50% of his 3 pt. attempts. Also, look for 6’8” center Hunter Bivin... Read More →

2012-2013 Kentucky High School Basketball Preview - 8th Region Boys

By theguru - Preseason 8th Rregion Rankings 1. Collins (24-11) - Being a brides maid last year did not sit well with the Titans. This year, with the talent Coach Gaither has returning, look for them to be the favorite in the 8th region. They lost big man Brian Stone inside, but have lots of talent left to fill the need. Coach Gaither and his Titans had a great summer, playing Ballard close, and making it to the finals against Bullitt East in Frankfort. They are definitely the most athletic team in the region, and with their depth, they have what it takes to be at the dance in March. It starts with... Read More →

2012-2013 Kentucky High School Basketball Preview - 7th Region Boys

By theguru - Preseason 7th Region Rankings 1. Ballard - Ballard’s 2011-12 campaign ended with a hard-fought, three-point loss to eventual state champion, Trinity in the Seventh Region semifinals. The Bruins enter the 2012-13 season as favorites to win the region and among those considered favorites to win the state title in March. Coach Chris Renner has a supremely talented squad that boasts three of the top players in the region. Much of Ballard’s title hopes rest on University of Louisville commit Quentin Snider (16.9 ppg) and the as-yet-uncommitted Lavonne Holland (15.7 ppg). As their numbers... Read More →

2012-2013 Kentucky High School Basketball Preview - 4th Region Boys

By theguru - For the past decade, two schools have ruled supreme over the 4th Region. Warren Central and Bowling Green have combined for 10 of the last 11 regional championships and 6 runner-up finishes in that span. These two powerhouses have faced off in the region finals for the last three years. You have to go back to the year 2000 to find a 4th Region championship game that didn't feature one of the two teams. The trend doesn't figure to change this year. Backed by two extremely strong junior classes, the Dragons and Purples are expected to be at the top of the region yet again. Russell County... Read More →

2012-2013 Kentucky High School Basketball Preview - 5th Region Boys

By theguru - John Hardin returns both the top guard and top forward in the region. They will be the heavy favorite to repeat as 5th Region Champs. However, there are a lot of questions left to be answered that could change the landscape in the 5th entirely. Intrigue will follow behind first year school Thomas Nelson. Can Kevin Ndahiro get himself eligible? And if he does, can the Generals compete for a 5th Region crown in their first season? Another Canadian, Tyronn King could help North Hardin reach the state tournament for the first time since 2009/2010. The top three teams all reside in the... Read More →

2012-2013 Kentucky High School Basketball Preview - 16th Region Boys

By theguru - The 2011/12 basketball season played out just as many had imagined it would from the onset, with the favorite Rowan County Vikings, who returned all of that state runner-up experience. Many figured their toughest competition would come from the Tomcats of Ashland, and that's exactly how it unfolded. This year, however, it's not that easy to prognosticate with any assurance of accuracy. Most basketball folk can agree on a top five or six, but nearly all of them disagree on the favorite, or how each team should be ranked. The top two players in this region were once teammates and, of course, it... Read More →

2012-2013 Kentucky High School Basketball Preview - 15th Region Boys

By theguru - In the grand scheme of Kentucky High School Basketball, the 15th region (like it's mountain brethren) is often overshadowed by the traditional Louisville, Lexington, and NKY power regions. However, when it comes to passion for high school basketball, the 15th region and its fan bases are hard to top. Night in and night out, gymnasiums across Pike, Floyd, Johnson, Lawerence, Magoffin, and Martin counties are packed with loyal followers. And the good thing about November is that everyone still has a shot. Last year, it was the Johnson Central Golden Eagles, led by standout Shane Hall, who came... Read More →

2012-2013 Kentucky High School Basketball Preview - 9th Region Boys

By theguru - It's safe to say that the 9th region will have a new representative at the state tournament this year. Boone County made a surprising run in 2011-2012 to claim the title, but they lost virtually everything to graduation. Coach McQueary will have them playing hard, but it may be a few years until they compete for another regional title. So, who will be on top when it is all said and done for 2012-2013? Who are the top players this year? Here is a look into the upcoming year. 9th Region Preseaon Rankings (Returning Player Lists Courtesy of KHSAA/Riherds) 1. Holmes (23-7 last year) - We... Read More →
