Inside the 15th Region (1-30-17)

By 15th Region - Overview: The 57th district has been extremely fun this season and week nine did not disappoint. Timmy Dalton and Mason Blair continue to be top 20 in the nation in scoring per max preps. The top of the region is beginning to separate its self from the rest as post season rapidly approaches. Although difficult to do this season, we are back to traditional rankings after nine weeks of play. 1. Johnson Central (17-6) – The Golden Eagles went 3-0 in week nine with wins over Lawrence County, Belfry and Sheldon Clark. In the Lawrence County game, Mason Blair went for a school record 58... By mcpapa - Last week saw the region's top team's 16-game winning streak snapped and the region's new number 2 take home the All-A hardware. Here we go... 1. Campbell County (20-2, 8-1 region). Coach Russell's squad ran into a buzzsaw at state top-5 Covington Catholic last week, bringing an end to "the streak". Bertsch, Day and Hegyi tallied double figures and hung tough for the better part of three quarters, but CVH and crew were too much. The Camels rallied later on for easy victories over Montgomery County and Bourbon County, with Hegyi and Bertsch again leading the way. Harrison County,... Read More →

8th region re-cap Week 9 1/30/17

By 8th Region Warrior - February is here!! For most teams districts will start on or around the 20th, what teams are going to gel? Who will get hot and win the 8th region in 2017? There are 3-4 teams as of right now with the hot hand, that does not mean something can change in these last 3 weeks of the season. This month usually contains senior night as well for kids and maybe their last home game of their career, a reflection on some of our seniors in the 8th region and what they have meant to the region. Who is going to POY in the 8th region? How about COY? All are some questions that I will address in our... Read More →

The Firm Always Knows Best- Smith, Smith, Coverdale & Holcomb

By ChiefSmoke - I got a phone call today from Mike Holcomb. Great guy and one of the greatest HS football coaches of all time in our state. Here is a column on "THE FIRM." Smith, Smith, Coverdale and Holcomb. The Firm. Specifically, the four names are Homer Smith, Chuck Smith, Andrew Coverdale, and Mike Holcomb. I hear that expression several times through the season and every now and then during the offseason. John Arn (our former oline coach and defensive coordinator) came up with the phrase but I think Shawn Thompson (the defensive coordinator before John Arn) was the first to announce that the... Inside the 3rd Region (1/30)

By ApolloFan98 - Apollo retains their top spot this week, but the gap between them and the rest of the region may have gotten a little closer. After a disappointing showing against Bardstown on Saturday, it will be interesting to see how the Eagles respond. Owensboro is the team to watch, after getting a big time win over a very good Evansville Bosse team. Outside Apollo, Daviess County has shown the most consistency, while Owensboro Catholic continues to prove up and down. Outside the city, Ohio County looks like they may be the team to emerge down the stretch. 1. Apollo Eagles(17-3) SAME - The Eagles... Read More →

Inside the 6th Region (1/30/2017)

By coachlee - Now 3 weeks remain before district play begins and this past week brought a few insights that confirm there are several tiers with the 6th region where teams are falling within. I see a group of teams within a top tier of the likely favorites to contend for the regional title, a second tier that should make it past districts, and a final tier for another 4-5 teams that have some work cut out if they expect to make the regional tournament this year. All other teams I will simply rank with updated records as they have not shown enough to believe they can get out of districts based on their... Read More →

Getting on the Same Page: Remembering the Royals of the late 90s

By ChiefSmoke - This was a week when two different world's ran in to each other. As a staff here at Mercer, we have spent much of the week working to continue getting on the same page. Offensive & defensive schemes, gameplans, the weightroom, practice plans, etc. have all been discussed. Don't underestimate how tough it is for a football program and staff to become one cohesive unit. Communication, listening, explanations, etc. are critical and often a staff of football coaches can be a strong-willed group of guys. 60169 JT Walsh (7) & Brandon Drake (61) in our season opening win at Bath County....
