2013-14 Kentucky High School Basketball Preview - 2nd Region

By The Scribe - Last year, Hopkinsville was one of the more overwhelming favorites to win the region in recent memory. After a near-upset to Madisonville in the semifinals of the region, the Tigers handled Henderson County to claim the region title and advanced to the state final four. The Tigers return senior big man Jaqualis Matlock and add guard Quan Poindexter from cross-town rival Christian County. Henderson County and Madisonville both return key players to challenge Hopkinsville. The two wildcards are University Heights and Caldwell County. The Blazers will benefit from several transfers... 2013-14 Kentucky High School Basketball Preview- 9th Region

By Walter - When it comes to 9th region basketball, there is almost always never any guarantees. Last season the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds and Cooper Jaguars came in as the preseason #1 and #2 teams in the region. Newcath ended up as All “A” Classic state champions and finished with a 30-3 record but were bounced from the region tournament in the first round. The Cooper Jaguars set a school record with 24 wins and 6 losses, winning 16 of their final 18 games, but were eliminated in the region semi finals on an overtime 3 pointer. That brings us to the #4 team in the coaches preseason... Read More →

2013-14 Kentucky High School Basketball Preview - 11th Region

By JokersWild24 - Ranking the 11th: 1. Scott County: Another year, another preseason #1 for Billy Hicks’ Scott County Cardinals. With a few familiar faces returning in Trent Gilbert, Tony Martini, Seth Crank, and Dylan Portwood joining forces with newcomers like 7’0 Raekwon Long and smooth wing Teddy Ware, the Cards look to return to Rupp. One of the great unknowns for this team is who will be running the point against some of the more tenacious pressure defenses that the 11th will throw out. 2. Lexington Catholic: It seems as though it’s been awhile since the Lexington Catholic Knights and Scott... Read More →

By Walter - The season has come to an end for all but two Northern Kentucky teams. Let's take a look back at this past week's games and a look ahead to what lies ahead for the teams still playing. Frankfort 35 Beechwood 21 A season that was full of both highs and lows has come to an end for Coach Rash's Tigers. For the first time since 2006 (when Newcath was apart of 1A), Beechwood will not be playing in the state semi finals of the Class 1A playoffs. Beechwood allowed 251 yards and 5 TD's on the ground. The Tigers lost running back Joe Studer on the first possession of the game, and the offense... Read More →

Inside North-Eastern Kentucky Playoffs (11-25-13)

By Ram - Raceland 14 Pikeville 3 What happens when you get two high powered offenses together for a “Big Stakes” playoff game? A defensive battle, that’s what. Apparently both Raceland Coach T.J. Maynard and Pikeville Coach Chris McNamee know how to prepare for a good offense. Pikeville came in to this game averaging 48 points per game with a thousand yard rusher, a thousand yard receiver, and a thousand yard passer. Raceland came into this game with a thousand yard rusher, a thousand yard passer, and several receivers that have had the ball spread around to them. What happened? Neither... Read More →

The visiting Titans led 3-0 before giving up 17 unanswered points, but they were still within 17-11 at halftime. However, the Knights scored twice in the first 2:33 of the second half on a 58-yard run by Marcellis Logan and a 25-yard interception return by Zack Middleton, and... Read More →

2013-14 Kentucky High School Basketball Preview - 16th Region

By Randy Parker - Preview by: spindoc Ranking the Teams 2013 season in review: Wow is all you can say about the 16th region tournament last season. Just some great performances and great team wins. Many thought Fleming the favorite, with Ashland a close second. Russell had many in it's corner, and you could never count out Rowan County. Some solid games in the first round, but no real upsets with the possible exception of Rowan over Morgan. Then the semis saw Rowan upend one of the favorites Russell by the score of 53-50 and Fleming flex over Ashland to set up a 61st district battle for... Read More →

Last year's 8th Region Champions saw a large contingent of seniors graduate from the program, leaving Coach Steve Simpson, one returning starter in guard Kyle Young (8.5ppg/4.3rpg). 2013-14 Kentucky High School Basketball Preview - 15th Region

By All State Baseball - Johnson Central (22-11): Johnson Central won the 15th region championship last year defeating Sheldon Clark 59-48. Johnson Central would go on to the KHSAA State tourney where they would face off against Ballard in the first round. That game didn’t go well as Ballard won 75-54. The good thing for the Golden Eagles in 2013/14 is that everyone from last year’s team that went 22-11 and to the KHSAA sweet 16, returns, which should make Johnson Central the heavy favorite to repeat as district and region champions.Schedule:12/6 Mr. Basketball Classic @ Tates Creek (Johnson Central vs. Dixie... 2013-14 Kentucky High School Basketball Preview - 6th Region

By SixthRegionHoops - Ranking the Teams: 1. Pleasure Ridge Park — the Panthers stunned Bullitt East en route to the regional title last year, and returns three of the top players in the region – seniors Lamontray Harris, D’Angelo Hunter, and Antonio McDaniels. All are bona fide Division I players, and are the reason the Panthers are ranked #2 (behind only Ballard in the preseason AP poll that was released on November 20). Harris and Hunter are long and athletic, and McDaniels is extremely quick and an excellent perimeter shooter. 6’5 junior Richard Gaines may be the best leaper in the city, and 5’11... Read More →

2013-14 Kentucky High School Basketball Preview - 7th Region

By Getslow - Ranking the Teams 1) Ballard The Seventh Region’s perennial powerhouse, the Bruins have fallen just short of glory and lost to the eventual state champion each of the last two years: in a 55-58 slugfest against Trinity in the 2012 Seventh Region Championship and on a heartbreaking last-second shot to Madison Central in 2013 State Championship game. Luckily for Ballard and head coach Chris Renner, the Bruins return four of their five starters from last year’s team along with a number of contributors. For the fifth year running, the Bruins led the Seventh Region in per game scoring,... Read More →

2013-14 Kentucky High School Basketball Preview - 13th Region

By theguru - Preview by Les Up until the past couple of years, you could almost guarantee the 13th Region champion would be coming out of the 50th District with both South Laurel and Corbin flexing their muscles, but it looks as if the power has shifted to the 49th District. Yep, two years ago Brad Sizemore’s North Laurel Jaguars surprised many by capturing the 13th Region championship, and last season the Clay County Tigers ended a 12-year drought by capturing their first 13th Region crown since Mike Jones led them to the feat in 2001. So who is the team to beat this season? It has to be the... Read More →

By PurplePride92 - The 2012-13 12th Region Champion, Wayne County, ended their season with an 81-56 pasting given by the eventual state champion, Madison Central, in the opening game of the 2013 Sweet Sixteen tournament. The good news is that they return four starters from a team that posted a 17-3 record against 12th Region opponents last season. The bad news is that their dominance last season didn't go unnoticed and the offseason has brought new hope to many teams in the 12th Region trying to win the regional tournament in order to advance to Rupp Arena. 2013-14 Kentucky High School Basketball Preview - 3rd Region

By All State Baseball - Ohio County (25-8): Ohio County won the third region last year defeating Owensboro Catholic 49-38 in the regional championship game. Ohio County would go on to the KHSAA Sweet 16 where they opened up with region 1 winner, Graves County. Things didn’t go as planned for the Eagles of Ohio County as they would fall to Graves County 74-60, ending their season. Ohio County lost two of three top scorers from last year but return some more good talent from last year’s team that should make things interesting for them in the third region in 2013/14.
