5A Notebook (8/25): Getting Defensive

By DevilMayCare - Another week, another slate of mostly chalky results. Through two weeks, 5A has managed to avoid a dramatic shake-up at the top. CovCath, BG, South Warren, South Oldham, and Highlands all won their Week 1 games by an average score of 40-8. That's the sort of domination you want to see from your top teams. Top ranked Covington Catholic continued its reign of terror, jumping on Henry Clay early, and never looking back. The 41-0 beatdown was a textbook display of efficiency and killer instinct. With the promising potential of quarterback Caleb Jacob, weapons like McGinness, Mayer, and Coldiron,... Read More →

Class 2A Notebook 8/26- Is the Fog Clearing for District 7 Already?

By ATLCat - District 7 Teams Providing Insight Danville's opening week win over 6A Woodford County, a team in the midst of one of the State's longest losing streaks, did not really give us much insight. Neither did subsequent Week 1 wins by Somerset and LCA over Lincoln County and Waggener, another pair of teams not noted for long playoff runs. With a ton of roster turnover among the three teams, we needed Week 2 to finally start to give a glimpse of what we can expect as all three teams faced ranked opponents that have been to the State Finals in the not so distant past. DANVILLE- The Admirals... Read More →

3A Notebook: Corbin Showing No Signs of Falling Off

By gchs_uk9 - Redhounds' Estep Filling in Nicely for Departed Sizemore The biggest concern heading into 2018 for the Corbin Redhounds was the quarterback position. Gone was three year starter Cameron Sizemore who had posted 6,760 passing yards, 1,501 rushing yards, and accounted for 112 total touchdowns in his career. Replacing him would be Chase Estep. Estep, an outstanding baseball pitcher, previously started at running back and had amassed 710 rushing yards and eight touchdowns in leading Corbin to the Class 3A state championship game in 2017. But how would he handle playing quarterback? If two... Read More →

Bluegrasspreps' Eastern Kentucky Power Rankings 8-26

By ATLCat - 1. Corbin Redhounds (3A, 2-0)- The Redhounds looked good by taking care of business against the defending 2A Champions and QB Chase Estep is proving the drop off after Cameron Sizemore is not nearly what people expected. 2. Johnson Central Golden Eagles (4A, 0-1)- The Eagles took a tough loss to Capital, WV. They will try to rebound against Henry Clay. The good news is Joe Jackson is back and as good as we remember. 3. Belfry Pirates (3A, 0-1)- Belfry had a tough hand to work against Friday missing their veteran QB and turning it over 4 times against a very good foe, but the Pirates... Read More →

1A Notebook 8/22/2018 - Groundwork

By Voice of Reason - The opening week of games in 1A laid the groundwork for the season to come. The top ranked teams successfully took on larger class opponents and set the stage for tougher games this week. There no upsets as the top 8 teams all either posted wins or had an open week. The action this week was in spots 9, 10 and 11. All three of those teams took losses but #10 Paris and #11 Louisville Holy Cross has strong showings against solid 4A opposition. On the other hand, #9 Frankfort had a serious stumble against 3A Thomas Nelson who only won 3 games in 2017. Those results shook up the lower part of the... Read More →

Mr. Football Watchlist (8/22)

By DevilMayCare - Quarterbacks Zach Thornton, Danville Week 0: 5 of 11 for 54 yards ; 11 rushes for 76 yards and a TD in a 40-0 win over Woodford County Stock: <> Thornton didn't have a huge game, statistically, but that's partially because the Ads didn't need him to versus a woefully overmatched Woodford County. He'll have an opportunity for a showcase game this coming Saturday versus Corbin, where Danville will almost certainly need Thornton to step it up a notch or two. Read More →

Class 4A Notebook (8/21): Three Kings

By DragonFire - I hope you enjoy the trio of Johnson Central, Franklin-Simpson, and Ashland at the top of the 4A rankings. Week 1 did nothing to discourage the notion that they are the elite of the elite in the class. The order may (or may not) change among those three this year, but Week 1 only reinforced the perception they’re not going to get run down from behind. With Johnson Central off to start the season as per usual, Franklin-Simpson carried the banner for 4A. The defending state champion and potential co-favorite met an Elizabethtown squad that had thrashed them 55-23 via a running clock to... Read More →

Northern Kentucky Power Rankings: 08-21-18

By Colonels_Wear_Blue - 1) 5A Covington Catholic (1-0) – With sophomore Caleb Jacob getting the starting nod at QB, the Colonels came out swinging on Friday against 6A Ryle, beating the Raiders 40-7. Caleb was an impressive 12 for 15 passing for 294yds and 2 TDs, connecting with Johnny Schuh and D1 commit Jack Coldiron for TD receptions. Zack Coburn and Duncan Summe also look to be favorite receivers this season. Senior RB Casey McGinness started off his 3rd year starting for Cov Cath with a 188yd game on the ground and 4 TDs. On the defensive side, the Colonels have moved junior Notre Dame commit Michael Mayer from... Read More →

6A Notebook: Blood in the Water!

By Bac2369 - Blood in the Water The first week, or Week 0 of the High School Football season is in the books. The 6A Class would have big questions to be answered and have a few teams smelling the blood in water like a shark. One of those questions answered was, ‘Could Trinity keep the 30 game win streak going?’ Another question would be, ‘Why are teams smelling blood in the water?’ The #1 Trinity Shamrocks would open their season on the road against a tough Carmel (IN) team. Trinity took an early lead in the 1st quarter, but Carmel stormed back with 10 unanswered points late in the 2nd quarter.... Read More →

Class 2A Notebook 8/20- Come at Me Bro!

By ATLCat - What an excellent week for Class 2A! After proving itself as perhaps pound for pound the toughest class last year, the 2018 season started with the top three teams all making a statement in a big way. DeSales Serves Notice No one in the State would doubt that DeSales had a football team capable of putting up a fight against one of Kentucky's elite large school programs. The Colts are perennially one of the Top 20 overall teams in Kentucky and have made a tradition of knocking off other 6A programs in Jefferson County. With that said, very few people outside of fans of the Colts'... Read More →

BluegrassPreps Rankings (8/20)

By Ram - Class 1A For the seven teams in Class 1A's Top 8 who were in action, Week 1 was ripe with victory and great starts. Nearly every team overwhelmed their opponent and got 2018 off to a roaring start. Week 2 will be ripe with challenges. Five different teams will face ranked foes, headlined by defending champion Beechwood taking the field for the first time against Lloyd. Perhaps the most anticipated match-up will come as Raceland challenges one of 4A's top teams in a huge rivalry game. 1. Beechwood vs. 2A #8 Lloyd 2. Pikeville vs. 2A #10 Lexington Christian (8/25) 3. Raceland at 4A #3... Read More →

5A Notebook: Colonels roll, Purples bowl, Spartans in control

By DevilMayCare - As opening weekends go, Week 0 in 5A was rather uneventful. That's not to say that there weren't some noteworthy performances and close calls. But the opening weekend of the season can usually be counted on to deliver some unexpected surprises (I'm looking at you 6A!). Relative to its neighbors to the north, 5A was downright pedestrian this past week - not that that's a bad thing. There was much to digest from the week that was - a couple of heavyweights gave all indications that they're not going to budge from their lofty perches; another brand name program showed enough resolve to overcome... Louisville Power Rankings - August 20th

By TheDeuce - 1. 6A Male (1-0) The Bulldogs traveled across the river to Floyds Knobs to take on Floyd Central (IN) in their 2018 opener and posted a 41-3 victory. Led by senior QB Garrett Dennis, who was 7/10 for 100 yards and two scores, the Bulldogs dominated FC throughout. On top of Dennis' performance, Male rushed for 305 yards on the evening, and Izayah Cummings added 78 receiving yards and two more scores. BluegrassPreps - Western Kentucky Power Ranking - Week 1 - 8/19/18

By Purple88 - BluegrassPreps 2018 Western Kentucky Power Rankings - Week 1 Edition Well I hope you had a great opening weekend to the 2018 Kentucky High School football season and hope you got to go see some of your favorite teams lace em up one more time! We have gone from I think this and that to I saw this and that from THIS years squads. The top story line this week is anticipation. It is a fickle thing. Even if you say you don't know what to expect from your team, subconsciously you do and likely it is a continuation, to some degree, of last season minus the graduated 2017 seniors. Well the...
